Lies

She ran down the dark, empty corridor as she looked back to see if anything was following her. She heard the light and faint footsteps that were coming her way.

A splosh echoed as it stepped into a puddle, and continued running. She puffed and panted, weaving through the seemingly endless maze.

Sweat ran down her face as she continued to run, her throat screaming of dehydration. Her legs ached.

Her face was smudged with grime, but the only thing that she feared was for her life. It had gotten to her friends, it had gotten to her family, it had gotten to everyone she was close to, and it had destroyed them.

It had made her worry in the daytime, it had haunted her dreams. It was her nightmare. But now, it was about to come true.

She made a turn and her shoes screeched to a halt. She was facing a wall. It was a dead end. There was no escape now.

No... she thought, not like this.

She felt her way around the wall, searching for a secret entrance or door. There was a spark of hope in her. But she found nothing.

She heard a soft cackle as it approched her slowly and silkily, like a tiger stalking its prey. She sled to the ground, hugging her knees and covering her eyes with her hands.

A pink mist began to fill the room, engulfing her in it. She uncovered one eye and looked around her. She started having nausea and felt like she could throw up any second, but she couldn't. The thick mist was surrounding her, almost choking her.

Voices started whispering all around her all at once, and she didn't know which one to turn to. The blood was rushing in her ears, and fear struck her hard, like a mallet striking a gong.

"She's a traitor!" one said.

"She's a liar!" said another.

"She never cared about you, only herself!"

"She's selfish!"

"She's a monster!"

"She had always hated you, back from the very start!"

The voices seemed to merge as one at this very sentence.

"She never loved you."

"That's a lie!" she shouted back, and her voice cracked.

A pair of maroon eyes seemed to appear, followed by a mouth with fanged teeth as the feminine voice laughed sourly. "You really are naive, aren't you?"

Then, it all seemed that the voices started to turn on her. It seemed that her family members and friends had all spoken at the same time. Their voices had been modified with the eerie hiss of a snake.

"Traitor!" they yelled.

"Stupid!"

"If you never done it then this wouldn't have happened!" they shouted.

"You are selfish, you never cared for her!"

"Look at you. Pathetic." they spat.

"Even a baby could do better than you!" they taunted.

"Idiot."

"You never care about others' feelings!"

"You never loved them. That's why they all perished."

She finally knew what it was. "S-stop it, Lyz!" she cried, her voice hoarse and her face streaming with tears. "Y-you are a lie and I r-refuse to b-believe you! M-maybe that's w-why your name s-sounds e-exactly like it!" she stammered.

"Exactly." The creature grinned. "So, you finally figured it out, hm?"

The mist that had been choking her disappeared from around her, forming into a thin rope-like shape.

"Once you get infected, you never get out," it hissed and shot down her throat, quick as a serpent.

She let out one last terrified scream that echoed down the dark tunnels of the sewer, before she got taken over.
