Part Four of the Pretty Setter Series

Life was going pretty well for you now. You were attending Date Tech High as a first year. Your grades were high, you had a large group of friends, and not to mention, a boyfriend.

He was taller than an normal, average Japanese person. He was also tanner than most of the students and had blonde hair with a few black streaks at the front of his head, which made him look like the yellow bird from Angry Birds. But you loved him anyways.

He was very energetic and happy, but was clumsy at times. He liked to bring you to places during the weekends and made sure that you had fun. He wasn't as studious as you were, so you helped him study in many subjects, especially Math. But all in all, he was very caring. He loved sports, especially volleyball.

His name was Koganegawa Kanji.

You were walking down the steps of your school, making your way to the cafeteria get some lunch. You had stayed back to do a test since you weren't at school yesterday.

As you turned to go down the last flight of stairs, you slipped on a small, unnoticeable puddle of water and started to tumble down the steps.

You tried to regain balance and as a result of your arms flailing around, you landed head-first onto the ground. You could also be described as a little clumsy. Well, maybe not just a little.

You pushed yourself up to your knees with your weak arms as black spots danced before your eyes. As you stared at the ground, there was a splatter of crimson blood. You panicked, and your voice failed to allow you to speak or scream. Your sight became blurry, and your hearing became muffled. You could hardly keep your eyes open.

It was almost as fate was punishing you for having such a good life.

You heard footsteps running towards you and a faint but familiar voice calling your name.

"(Y/n)! (Y/n)! Can you hear me?"

You squinted and saw a blonde figure rushing over to you. It was Koganegawa. You managed a tiny smile and nod.

"Quick, call the hospital!"

"I'm on it!"

"I'll stay with her!"

It wasn't long until you couldn't hold on to consciousness any longer, and you collapsed into a pool of your own blood.

Koganegawa picked your limp body up with his strong arms. Tears were already forming in his eyes, threatening to fall any minute.

He checked your pulse, and was immediately relieved when he learned that you were still alive and breathing, but unconscious.

"What do we do now?" He asked one of the teachers.

"Don't worry. We'll just wait until the ambulance arrives," she replied.

Koganegawa bit his lip, wishing for it to arrive as quick as possible.

He kneeled down and set you on the floor. He grabbed a tissue from his pocket and began to wipe the remaining of the blood on your forehead.

The ambulance arrived shortly. Koganegawa carried you over to the mattress and the nurses wheeled you into the vehicle.

"All right, everyone. (Y/n) will be fine. Now get back to your classes, all of you," the principal announced.

"But...!" Your boyfriend began to protest.

"No buts! Everyone go back to class, now. You can all visit (y/n) after school."

Everyone started to file back to their classrooms. One by one, they disappeared, until he was the only one left in the lunchroom. Koganegawa cursed under his breath, then followed the rest of the students in.

Koganegawa had visited you everyday after school at the hospital, but every time he came, you were either unconscious or asleep. He left gifts by your bedside table, and had stayed by your side for hours, waiting for you to wake up.

He missed your sweet voice so badly. He missed your (e/c) eyes and your soft (h/c) hair. He missed it when you would turn to him with a grin on your face and call his name happily.

"Kanji-chan!"

He lowered his gaze and frowned as he held your hand gently in his. It was completely silent, apart from the reassuring beeps of the heart monitor that continued to sound.

Koganegawa rested his head in his arms, his head completely bent over. It seemed so fragile. He liked the feeling of your soft, gentle hands.

"Are you (y/n)'s boyfriend?"

A sudden voice made him jolt straight up. Koganegawa turned around quickly. One of the nurses was standing in the doorway.

He nodded. "Yes, ma'am."

She gave him an apologetic smile. "It must be hard. I'm sorry, but we have to prepare for (y/n)'s surgery. It's going to start in 30 minutes, so would you kindly wait outside or come visit again tomorrow?"

"Alright." Koganegawa stood up, heading for the door. "Thank you so much for taking care of (y/n)."

"It's nothing. It must be great for her to have such a caring boyfriend like you."

He did not reply, but simply nodded in response, then walked down the hallway, his footsteps the only thing echoing in the silent atmosphere.

The next day after school ended, Koganegawa came to visit you again. A familiar woman was at the front desk. It was the nurse from yesterday!  He went straight to nurse.

She looked up. "Oh, it's you, from yesterday."

"How is (y/n)?" He demanded. He didn't mean it to be harsh, he was just desperate to know.

"The surgery was a success! (Y/n) is in her room right now."

Koganegawa's worried expression turned into a smile from ear to ear. He started to walk towards the hallway for the patients.

"Wait," The nurse said, taking hold of his sleeve. "Koganegawa-kun, it pains me to tell you this, I'm not entirely sure, but ever since the surgery, (y/n) has been acting pretty strangely. "

He turned back to face her with a confused expression.

"What?" He tilted his head.

The nurse nodded.

"I'm sure it's nothing...Don't worry, I'm sure she'll be fine once she sees me!" He exclaimed.

He walked quickly, almost breaking in a run to your room with excitement. As he approached the door, he slowed down and turned the handle to enter.

Pushing open the door, he smiled as he saw you sitting straight up on your bed, reading a book. It was the book he gave you. He waved at you.

"(Y/n)! You're awake!" He exclaimed happily.

You nodded, smiling back at him. Koganegawa placed another box on the table.

"Thank you for all the gifts," you said, "I loved them all. How did you know I liked (g/i)?"

He blushed and smiled. "It was nothing."

He pulled a chair from behind the table and sat down next to you, a child-like grin on his face.

"Remember when we went to my house and you fell asleep while watching (m/n)? I had to let you stay the night because you looked so tired." He laughed.

"And remember that you would always help me study for my tests and exams? It helps me understand more even though I'm still kind of failing. Oh, and you should come to my volleyball practice one day. It's really amazing how..." He rambled on and on.

But with every story he told, you looked even more distant and confused. Koganegawa decided to change the topic.

"Do you like the book? You told me that you wanted to read it sooner or later, but you didn't get the chance to after the incident. Ah, I'm really sorry. I should have waited in front of the classroom for you instead of in the cafeteria. Then you wouldn't have got injured." Koganegawa looked down.

You blinked.

"Er...what incident?"

"Eh? You don't remember? You somehow fell down the stairs and hit your head really hard, then we had to rush you to the hospital," he explained. "(F/n) and I were very worried."

"....Who?"

"Sorry. It must have been a hard topic for you. Let's talk about something else," Koganegawa said.

There was a long silence. Then you decided to break it due to your confusion.

"I'm sorry, but I think you must have mistaken me for the wrong person. I...I don't remember doing all those things..." You murmured quietly, scratching your head.

Koganegawa froze in place, his eyes widened in horror. Why didn't (y/n) remember anything he mentioned? Had a section of the surgery gone wrong? That was when it hit him.

"Erm...you look really pale."

Am...

"Are you okay?"

Ne...

"Was it something I said?"

Sia...?

"Should I call in a nurse?"

Koganegawa shook his head.

"I'm really sorry," you said with an apologetic frown, "I can't seem to remember anything these days, but..."

"Who are you?"
