Chapter 1 - Raja Dahir

Raja Dahir was the last Hindu ruler of Sindh, which is now in Pakistan. His dynasty was known as Brahman Dynasty. His Kingdom included present day Sindh, part of Afghanistan, Baluchistan, and parts of Punjab. His father was Chach and his mother was Rani Suhanadi. In 711 CE, an expedition was led towards Sindh by General Muhammad Bin Qasim which was sanctioned by Governor Al-Hajjaj ibn Yusuf. One of the main reasons for this expedition is a pirate raid off the coast of Debal resulting in gifts from the king of Sri Lanka being stolen and a number of Muslim women captured by Meds (a tribe of Scythians living in Sindh), and seeking a well-known follower of Imam Hussain, Muhammad Bin Allafi. Dahir had even offered asylum to Hussain ibn Ali, the grandson of Prophet Mohammed, who was being persecuted at home. However, he was captured at Karbala in Iraq and killed most brutally. Muhammad Bin Qasim attacked Debal, and on the orders of the Governor Al-Hajjaj, freed the captives and prisoners from the previous failed campaigns. Raja Dahir knew that once Muhammad once crossed the river Indus, then it wouldn't be long that Qasim's army attacked his kingdom. But he refused to flee away. That means he refused to take shelter in inside India. Few days, before the final battle Dahir's Wazir approached him and suggested that he should take refuge with one of the friendly Kings of India or at least send his family to refuge in India. But he refused, by saying, "You should say to them,' I am the wall between you and the Arab army. If I fall, nothing will stop your destruction.' And I cannot send my family to security while the families of my thakurs and nobles remain here." Before going towards the battle field, his final words were, "I am going to meet the Arabs in open battle, and fight them as best as I can. If I crush them, my kingdom will then be put on a firm footing. But if I am killed honorably, the event will be recorded in the books of Arabia and India and will be talked about by great men. It will be heard by other kings in the world, and it will be said that Raja Dahir of Sindh sacrificed his precious life for the sake of his country, in fighting with the enemy." In this battle he was defeated and his head was severed from his body and sent to Hajjaj bin Yousuf. After this, Raja Dahir's territories were added into Umayyad Caliphate. And his son Jaisinh was killed in another battle. His wife, Ladi and one of his daughters Jodha Devi committed Jauhar. Whereas his other two daughters, Surya Devi and Parimal Devi, were captured and taken to Damascus. Somehow, Surya Devi managed to kill the general. She and her sister were killed in this process.

This was the story of brave king, Raja Dahir of Sindh, whom the country for which he had fought might have forgotten, but I have not forgotten.
