The Ladders

A field.

Swathed in the shimmering mist at the sunset hour,
Morphing into an impenetrable wall in the distance.

A wall blurring the
view,
Muffling the
sounds,
Erasing the
world.

I walk across the expanse of gold spreading all around me,
The spikes of wheat
still warm from the long gone sunshine folding under my bare feet,
Tickling
my
toes.

I smile as I reach the closest ladder,
Its tip piercing a smattering of violet clouds.
My last contact with this world isn't unpleasant...
If only I could stay.

But that's not a possibility. My mission here is accomplished.
I have to move on.
Where to is my
own
blind
choice.

Why are the ladders all the same,
Giving no hint of where they are leading...?
