The Harsh Truth

Sans landed on to Papyrus on the sofa in their house.

'Ow! Sans? Where did you... Wait, you just tried to teleport again, didn't you?' Papyrus asked.

'Heh heh...yeah...' Sans lied.

'I told you, don't teleport unless supervised until you've got it under control. I don't want you to accidently end up on the moon,' Papyrus said.

'What's the moon?' Sans asked.

'...Don't you have a cooking lesson with Alphys soon? Hey, why don't you call Chara and ask her to come along as well,' Papyrus said.

'That's a great idea! I have a brilliant way to make those two great friends!' Sans said pulling out his phone.

'COME BACK HERE AND FACE ME LIKE A MAN!' Alphys shouted as Chara ran. Just on cue, Chara's phone rang.

'Hey! What's up?!' Sans yelled through the phone. 'I was just thinking...you, me and Alphys should all hang out sometime! I think you would make great pals! Let's meet up at her house later!'

He hung up and Chara kept running.

Sans put his phone in his pocket.

'I've got to go. Oh, wait, before I do, I need to ask you something, Paps. Do you know what timelines a-'

Papyrus wasn't there. He'd already left.

Sans sighed before teleporting to Alphys's house. He was surprised when he did it perfectly.

'WOWIE! I've finally perfected my teleporting!' he yelled, happily.

Sans heard footsteps. He was about to turn around and see who was coming when everything went white. There was nothing around except one person: a Sans. He was wearing some quite weird clothes. Everything he wore was black and white and had crosses on. He had a white scarf with a black edge and his hood was pulled up. His right pupil was red and underneath the same socket was a red, sideways lightning bolt mark. He also had a golden heart locket and a giant knife. He was sat there and seemed to be talking to himself.

'Are we really going to do this? Steal half of Classic Sans's soul? ...I'm not scared. I just don't want to do it just yet... This has nothing to do with Ink, Chara!' the other Sans said. Sans perked up at the artist and human's names. 'I'm not his friend anymore. Not now he denied me what we want most. We're not gonna do it yet. I think we should wait 'til they've gotten to the surface for the final time. That way we won't have any reset and timeline problems.'

'Sans? Sans!' a voice Sans recognized called from nowhere. He blinked and the other Sans and white place around him disappeared. He was back in front of Alphys's house. Chara was stood there. 'Are you okay? You were all spaced out. That's the third time I've seen that happen to you, and one was followed by you getting a concussion. Is there something you're not telling me?'

'No, I'm fine, Human! No need to worry about me!' Sans lied.

'Sans, I know there's something you're not letting on. I mean, you never spoke to Alphys when I first entered Waterfall and you never called me to ask what I was wearing for Alphys, both things that we're meant to happen,' Chara said.

'What do you mean, "Meant to happen"?' Sans asked.

'Uh...hey, do you think we should keep Alphys waiting any longer?' Chara said, desperately trying to change the subject.

'Oh, right!' Sans turned to face the door. 'Psst, Human, make sure to give her this.' Sans pulled out a bone wrapped in yellow paper and red ribbon. 'She loves these.' He knocked on the door. It opened to reveal Alphys.

'Hey, Sans. Where have you been all day? You didn't come and give me a report on that human you called me about. I had to chase them all through Waterfall and I still didn't get them. Where were you?' she asked.

'It's a...uh...long story,' Sans said, scratching the back of his skull.

'Long story? We don't have time for that. We need to get on with your extra-private, one-on-one training! You ready?' Alphys said.

'You bet I am! Oh, and while we're on the subject, I've brought a new friend!' Sans said, stepping aside.

'Hi, I don't think we've...' Alphys trailed off, seeing it was Chara. She looked between the human and the skeleton before putting on a fake smile. 'Why don't. You two. Come in?'

She went inside and Sans, after wiping his boots on the doormat, eagerly followed. Chara stepped inside as well.

'Here, Alphys! My friend brought a gift for you! On their own!' Sans said, pulling out the wrapped bone.

'Uhh...thanks,' Alphys said, taking it. 'I'll, uh, put it with the others.' She opened the drawer filled with bones and added it to the pile. 'So, are we ready to start?'

'Whoopsy doopsy! I just remembered! I have to go to the bathroom! You two have fun!' Sans said. He turned and leapt headfirst through the window. He did a forward roll as he landed. He then sat down, waiting to see if his plan would work. There was a long pause before Alphys spoke.

'So, why are you here? To rub your victory in my face? To humiliate me even further? Is that it?!'

'Of course not!' Chara said in reply.

'Then why are you here? ...! Wait, I get it. You think that I'm gonna be friends with you, huh? Right?' Alphys asked.

'Yep,' Chara said, confidently.

'Really? How delightful! I accept! Let's all frolick in the fields of friendship! NOT! Why would I ever be friends with you? If you weren't my houseguest, I'd beat you up right now! You're the enemy of everyone's hopes and dreams! I WILL NEVER BE YOUR FRIEND! Now get out of my house!' Alphys yelled.

Sans knew this was his queue to step in again and help. He stood up and spoke through the broken window.

'Dang! What a shame... I thought Alphys could be friends with you. But I guess...I overestimated her. She's just not up to the challenge.'

'What?! Challenge?! Sans, wait a second!' Alphys yelled to him, but he already disappeared. Well, sort of. He'd just sat down beneath the window, out of sight of the two in the house. 'Darnit! He thinks I can't be friends with you? Fuhuhu! What a joke! I could make friends with a wimpy loser like you any day. I'll show him! Listen up, human. We're not just going to be friends. We're going to be...BESTIES! I'll make you like me so much, you won't be able to think of anyone else! Fuhuhu! It's the perfect revenge!'

Sans smiled. Looks like his works was done. He began to get up to leave when he paused. He changed his mind and sat back down, deciding to listen and make sure nothing happened that disrupted his plan.

He looked inside expecting to see Alphys and Chara but he didn't. Instead, there was a fox. A robot fox with an eye-patch and a hook for one its hands. There was also a boy with brown hair, a black shirt with two thick, grey stripes, blue shorts and grey shoes.

What AU is this? Sans thought. It's not like any of the others I've seen.

'Why don't you have a seat?' the Robot Fox said. The boy took a seat at the table. 'Comfortable?'

'Yeah,' the boy said.

'I'll get you something to drink,' the Robot Fox said.

Sans blinked and they were gone. Alphys and Chara were back. Alphys took a load of different items from her hot fridge and laid them out. Chara attempted to stand but Alphys threw her axe at the table.

'HEY! DON'T GET UP! YOU'RE THE GUEST! SIT DOWN AND ENJOY YOURSELF!' she yelled. Sans debated whether to step in again to help when Alphys recomposed herself. 'Uh...why not just point to what you want? You can use the axe.'

Chara used the axe and pointed it at Alphys and then wiggled one of her eyebrows.

'Are you...hitting on me!?' Alphys asked. Chara just winked in response. Sans held back his laughter so they wouldn't know he was still there.

Everything continued as normal. Chara chose golden flower tea to drink and Alphys got talking about how she became Head of the Royal Guard. That's when things changed.

'So, I'm the one who gets to train dorks to fight!' Alphys said, '...like, uh, Sans. But, um, to be honest...I don't know if I can ever let Sans into the Royal Guard.'

At this very moment, Sans felt his hopes and dreams crash to the ground. Glowing blue tears welled in his eyes and started to fall down his face.

'Don't tell him I said that! He's just...well... I mean, it's not that he's weak. He's actually pretty freaking tough! Heck, he's the strongest in the Underground with his DETERMINATION. It's just that...he's... He's too innocent and nice!'

Sans couldn't believe it. Alphys, his only friend apart from Papyrus and Chara, didn't believe in him, didn't think he had what it took to achieve his lifelong dream.

'I mean, look, he was SUPPOSED to capture you and he ended up being FRIENDS with you! I could never send him into battle. He'd get ripped into little smiling shreds. That's part of why I started teaching him how to cook, y'know? So, um, maybe he can do something else with his life.'

The wave of negative emotions flowing through Sans caused his right eye's blue glow to flicker on uncontrollably. Inside the house, the table, chairs and almost everything was surrounded by a blue aura and lifted into the air.

'WHAT THE HELL?!' Alphys yelled, extremely confused. Chara knew exactly what was happening.

'I'll be back in a minute,' she said, jumping off her floating chair. She ran outside and looked around. It didn't take her long to find the troubled skeleton. She ran to his side.

'Sans! Calm down. It's okay. I'm here. It'll be okay,' she said, hugging the skeleton and stroking his skull comfortingly.

'I...I...' Sans attempted to speak, but choked up on his tears.

'Sans, I know this is a very harsh truth for you to find out,' Chara began, 'but it'll be okay.'

'NO, IT WON'T,' he bawled. 'I... This is what I've worked my whole life for and...and now to find out it was all for nothing, I...I...'

He didn't finish and just sobbed into Chara's shoulder. Then, she had an idea,

'Maybe it doesn't have to all be for nothing.'

'Huh?' Sans looked up at her.

'Sans, come with me,' Chara said.

'Go with you where?'

'On my journey through the Underground! I'm gonna be facing all sorts of powerful monsters who want to kill me and if you help me get to the barrier and it will prove to Alphys that you have what it takes to be in the Royal Guard.'

'You really want me to go with you?'

'Well, I can't think of anyone better to bring than the Magnificent Sans,' Chara smiled.

'THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!' Sans hugged Chara tightly.

Chara smiled. Maybe this timeline wouldn't be as boring and unoriginal as she thought it would be.
