For Eros, an occasional leisure walk in the park alone helps in relieving all the stress from work. He believes that the cool and airy atmosphere of the old Liberty Park refreshes his mind and allows him to think clearly and more creatively. Ironically, his job as a graphic designer isn't a walk in the park. More so running his own graphic design business.
Trying his utter best to find an inspiration for this new project, he gazes at the serene explosion of greens and blues in front of him. The sky is turning a lush orange. The sun is getting ready to set.
"Argh! I find a fine time to run out of ideas!" he mutters to himself. The park is almost empty today, no one could hear his frustrations.
This project is one of their biggest to date. Frankly, he doesn't like to accept the project at all. The client is extremely demanding and meticulous. Not to mention the boss hasn't smiled at all during their meeting. But Spectroz Graphic Desigh Ltd. does not back down on clients' requests, no matter how hard they are.
His company's reputation is at stake, an endeavor he built from scratch. As much as he likes to drop this engagement, he doesn't like to smear black paint unto his company's name. Eros is a firm believer of advertisement through word of mouth and he wouldn't risk getting bad mouthed because they turned down a ridiculously demanding project.
"Sampaguita po, kuya?" he fails to notice a young girl selling Sampaguita flowers at his side. The girl is about seven, with round eyes and soft curly hair. He just waves his hand off in response to the girl's offer.
The Sampaguita or Arabian Jasmine is a native to a small region in the eastern Himalayas, India, and Pakistan and is naturalized in many scattered locales. It is the national flower of the Philippines and is widely cultivated for its beautiful and sweetly fragrant flowers. The garlands are available as loose strings of blossoms or as tight clusters of buds, commonly placed on altars for God and saints as a symbol of veneration.
"Maybe next time, little girl," he eyes the flower garlands the girl is holding as she walks away. He knows that even after a hundred next times, he'll never buy one of those.
Eros is an atheist. He's not spiritual nor religious. He has never attended church, even as a child.
He decides to keep walking farther into the park. He looks at the view of the park once more and sees only a couple of people walking by. It saddens him how a beautiful place could only be enjoyed by a few.
He's been here a lot of times and he knows where to go even with his eyes closed. Every time he goes to Liberty Park to get inspiration, he sits on a particular bench at the far end of the park.
He walks right past the colossal fountain serving as the park's centerpiece. It is a stone fountain with a twenty-foot angel sculpture in the middle. The angel is exquisitely made but it's clear the years haven't served it well. The water comes sprouting from the hands of the angel which are in prayer form. Eros doesn't know the name of the angel the sculpture is portraying because he doesn't know any at all. If he does, he's sure won't know what they look like.
After a few steps, he sees the bench he's looking for. Unfortunately, there is someone sitting there already.
"Tsk," he mutters to himself. It's not a big deal for Eros to share the bench because it could actually occupy three persons. But he comes to the park to clear his thoughts and find inspiration. And he tends to do it alone.
Little does he know that he's looking at the back of all the inspiration he needs.
A minute pass and Eros is still staring at the lone figure in front of him. The figure sitting on the bench, his bench, is barely moving. The girl is just gazing at nowhere.
The park is elevated so if seated in the right area, people could clearly see the entire city. The gargantuan skyscrapers of Manila and Makati City look like artistically placed Lego blocks forming an odd but striking landscape. Intermittently, trees could be seen which seem out-of-place in the landscape's modernist design.
Eros thinks that this may be what the stranger in front of him is looking for, too -- to see the beauty of the ugliness of the cities. What's more spectacular than the view is the deafening silence in this particular area of the park. The cities are very near but there aren't any noise at all, no cars horns or screeches, nothing. It's like watching a television but the audio is muted. It's like staring at a moving painting.
After five minutes of standing beside the fountain, Eros decides to finally come to the bench. It's pretty clear that the girl isn't going anywhere and he can't wait for her to leave for his legs are already tiring. He doesn't mind the company. It's not like he owns the bench.
As he nears the bench, he notices that the stranger isn't a girl at all, but a guy.
