Prologue - Troubling times.
3rd POV
"So that was the second time in a row? What did you do after that?" Ren asked
"It was my second and last time with those visions, never saw them again and you'll get your answer a bit later on," Alex responds to Ren
Alex POV
My friends are all standing in my living room, half-awake and annoyed. I didn't explain to any of them what this was about and they're probably...
Zach: "What the heck is this about?"
Yep.
Okay okay. Just try to explain this rationally. Start from the beginning, give them the full story, try to make them understand...
"Somebody is going to shoot Maya"
3rd POV
"So much for an organized explanation." Ren comments (Same react for me when Alex said that xd)
"I know, I did notice Sarah's expression when I said that" Alex comments
Alex POV
Dang, it.
Sarah: "Hang on, what?"
"Wait, Wait. Let me start at the beginning."
I start by explaining my first vision and our trip to the subway. Maya stays quiet and stares at me the entire time, while Zach and Sarah are looking at me, doubtfully.
I tell them about the second dream and try to make it clear to them I'm not making this up
Zach: "Hey look, if you're having trouble sleeping..."
He glances at the other two, looking for help.
Zach: "I mean... we're here if you need us but..."
Sarah: "Are you... are you feeling alright?"
They think I'm crazy. Well of course they think I'm crazy, why wouldn't they? This whole thing IS crazy.
I glance over at Maya, knowing I'm going to see the same look of pity and concern the other two are sharing.
I don't. Maya is looking at me thoughtfully.
Maya: "It's true."
Sarah: "What?"
Maya: "It's true. We went to the subway. Alex saw the assassin and came back scarred.
Sarah: "But that doesn't... what?"
Zach: "Maya why would someone be trying to kill you?"
Maya: "Believe it or not, my life experience has probably been different than yours."
Zach: "WHAT DOES THAT EVEN MEAN?!"
"If somebody is after you, they probably know where you live. We need to..."
Maya: "WE don't need to do anything. I need to leave town. Alone."
Zach: "Now hang on a minute..."
"You can't just..."
Maya: "The sooner I get out of here, the safer you all will be. You don't want to mess with the people chasing me."
Sarah: "Not a chance, Maya. We're your friends, and you're going to let us help you."Maya please, let us help"
Maya glances around at all our faces. She looks scared.
May: "Alright..."
Sarah: "Great! I know a cabin little ways out of town, it should be empty. You can lay low there for a couple of weeks."
Zach and Sarah decided to start investigating the subway incident. Sarah gives us directions to the cabin and I start making the drive out. It's an hour outside of town, out in the middle of nowhere. Nobody is going to find us here.
3rd POV
"I admire you and your friends for trying to help Maya, but I understand her situation and I think she really was worried for your safety if it weren't for the fact she was very scared based on your description." Ren comments
"I know, but it worked out in the end at least," Alex responds
Alex POV
Neither of us are going to be able to get any more sleep. Maya kills the hours until dawn pacing the floor. She doesn't have much to say about the people chasing her.
About an hour after dawn we heard the car pull up front. I have my eyes closed, half asleep, but the squeak of the brakes had me on my feet in an instant. I poke my head around the window to look outside.
"Alright, It's alright. It's just Sarah."
Sarah: "Hey guys. Glad to see you found the place. Wouldn't be good if you got lost out here, right?"
"Hey, how's it going? Where's Zach?"
Sarah: "He was talking to the police downtown, explaining what was going on. Well, a version of it anyway."
Maya: "What? What do you mean?"
"What are the police going to do? Maya didn't actually get attacked"
Sarah: "Yeah we may have... amended the story a bit. We told them a friend of ours got mugged in the subway."
"Maya?"
Sarah: "No. You. You're the one that saw him, right? You've got the best chance of identifying him.'
"I didn't see his face though."
Sarah: "Doesn't matter. We need to get the cops out looking, reviewing security footage. You need to go in and give them a statement. Zach's waiting at the station for you."
"Yeah... Yeah alright, that makes sense."
I glance over at Maya. I don't want to leave her out here alone but...
Sarah: "Hey don't worry, I'll stay here. I'm sure it'll be safe, nobody knows we're out here."
I wave goodbye to them and head out the door. It's another brisk fall morning.
Remembering the vision from last night I look around
3rd POV
"I have to ask, what did the cabin look like?" Ren asks
"Well, it had a window next to the door at the front, no front porch with a chimney, in the inside, it has a table inside"
"Hmm... it kind of reminds me of an old friend's cabin. Does it look like this? *shows a phone with
Jackdaw's cabin on the outside*" Ren says and shows
"Yeah, that's basically it, but the front part isn't there," Alex says
"What a coincidence." Ren comments
Alex POV
No fog at least. We've got that going for us.
As I'm getting in my car, I hear a chainsaw rev up in the distance. I watch a massive tree start shaking and eventually fall through the canopy below in the distance.
I hear a crashing boom from the distance as it hits the ground.
Just like in the vision.
It only takes me a second to realize. I took a second to leap out of my car and start running to the door.
!!!
Sarah: "I didn't want to have to do this myself."
3rd POV"Turns out, Sarah was working with the same people that was after Maya." Alex solemnly says
"Unexpected right? in the end betrayal comes from your closest friends," Ren remarks.
Alex POV
"SARAH PUT THE GUN DOWN!"
Sarah: "SHUT UP!!! THIS IS YOUR FAULT!"
A gunshot rings out
Maya lunges at Sarah while she's distracted and wrestles the gun away from her. She gets the gun trained on Sarah. She looks terrified.
Sarah: "It's your fault."
Sarah: "My job was to track her down. Not to pull the trigger. Not until you stepped in and ruined it for us."
"WHO ARE YOU WORKING FOR?! WHO WANTS MAYA DEAD?!"
Sarah: "She knows."
I glance at Maya but she's only looking at Sarah. Sarah is trembling a bit.
Sarah: "Look, shut up and shoot me already. Save them the trouble."
Maya:"... Call the police."
It takes the police nearly an hour to get to the cabin. Maya keeps a grip on the gun, subdued but watching Sarah the entire time. When the police arrive they take our statements, then take Sarah away in the back of the squad car.
"So... what are we going to tell Zach?"
Maya: "The truth."
"Or part of the truth?"
She won't quite meet my eyes.
Maya: "They're not going to stop coming."
"Listen, go to the cops. Tell them what you know. You can go into witness protection."
Maya: "I'll still be gone."
I don't have any response to that.
It's been over a year since that day. I haven't seen her since.
I don't know if she took the deal or not. I don't know if she's still hunted, and if she's still on the run.
I still hung out with Zach. He still never talks about Sarah. I think he wants to forget she exists. I leave it along, we hang out, and things feel normal again. For just a little while.
I'm always going to wonder where Maya is. She's never reached out to me, and I know she never will.
I'm never going to see her again.
But I also don't have visions of her death. And that's good enough for me.
3rd POV
"So that was your entire story? damn, I never knew you had that kind of burden." Ren says
"Yeah, I never got anyone to talk about it, It never appealed to me that talking to a guy I just met about my whole story felt so relieving," Alex responds while feeling relieved
breathing a sigh of relief
"Somehow talking to feels... calming..." Alex responds as he looks at Ren while drinking the rest of his drink.
"I get that a lot more than you think," Ren replies as he also finishes his drink.
"Oh well, it's been a good time talking to you I gotta go, it's kinda getting late," Alex says while looking at the Bar's clock. And pays for the drink
At that point, most of the people that crowed the bar have either left or still drinking there were some still drinking while the majority left
"Wait! if your gonna leave, why not give each others contacts? maybe you can talk to me like this time in the future." Ren says after calling out to Alex
"Sure, I don't mind, here." Alex gives his number to Ren while he confirms it.
"I'll see ya next time, we'll probably meet here or somewhere kay?" Ren says as he looks at Alex leaving the bar while still sitting down
"See ya, Ren." Alex waves while leaving the bar, leaving Ren and a few people left in the bar
Ren seeing that he's gone orders another drink from the bartender and analyzes what Alex told him the past hours It took a while it being 9:49 when the story started and ended at 10:52
He next grabs his phone to make a call, partly having a serious face.
"Hello? Ren, why are you calling at this time?" The man behind the phone asks.
"I have some orders to relay, can you search the records for a girl named Maya?" Ren says as he realizes his mistake.
"Ah, shit! I forgot to ask Alex what she looked like fuck!" Ren complains knowing it will be an important thing since there might be some girls named Maya
"Maya? from your complaining, you seem to forget something, but I'll try to look for that name." The man says while getting a pen to write down the name
"Hold that thought I have to hang up a bit, just prepare for my call," Ren says remembering that Alex is probably still heading home
He calls Alex on his phone after hanging up on the other man the line
*Ring* *Ring* *Ring*
Alex picks the phone up
"Ren? is that you? why'd you call?" Alex says, seemingly confused why he'd call when he just left a few minutes ago
"Yeah hey, do you remember what Maya looked like? I just wanted to know." Ren says as Alex seems to be confused
"Uh okay," Alex says
"She's kind of Morena (Skin tone that's somewhat brown and white), she had glasses with blue clothes and a hat the same color she also wore a small skirt, she also had purple eyes as well with a black scarf I've always seen her wearing. By the way, I'm describing her from the outfit she was wearing when I last saw so it might not be up to date." Alex lists Maya's features while Ren writes them
"Thanks, Alex, sorry for bothering you with this." Ren apologizes to Alex
"It's fine, I don't mind. I'll see you next time" Alex says as he hangs up the phone
Ren calls back the same man from before and picks up
"I've got what she looks like you still writing it?" Ren asks
"Go for it." the man says.
"She's somewhat brown, wearing purple clothes, not fully but with the main color is purple I guess. She also has purple eyes with a black scarf." Ren lists off as the man writes it down and listens
"Got it. I'll look it up tomorrow." The man says
"Great, I'll wait for it." Ren hangs up the phone after saying it and drinks his 4th and final drink.
"Thanks, Brian, here's the pay."
Ren slaps down some cash as payment for the drink and leaves through the front door of the bar.
He goes back home walking down the sidewalk.
