Quirk Awakening
"Mother look!" Her brown curls sway in the wind, a look of sheer excitement on her face as she sat on her knees, "Big brother has his quirk!"
Aya's eyes glossed over in excitement, she was elated to witness the awakening of her elder brother's quirk. She was always worried about her brother, he was eight years old and deemed quirkless as most children get their quirks at the age of four.
Dante was just a late bloomer.
"Let me see," Her mother appeared at the scene, kneeling down at the same height as her children, "What a wonderful quirk!" She beamed, the young eight-year-old boy had the palms of his hands in the air, it looked as if he were giving the air a high-five but he was controlling the wind, smiling as it danced along, following what he wanted it to do.
"Isn't it cool!" Dante's arms fell to his sides, and the wind which was moving around, causing everything to sway came to a halt at the boy looked at his mother with stars in his eyes like a cartoon character, "Where's Dad! Tell him to come look!"
The children's mother stood up straight, her smile softened as she explained that their father was called into work due to an emergency.
"Is everything okay?" Five-year-old Aya stepped forward, her eyes big and full of curiosity. Her father worked at a hospital as a Surgeon, a highly skilled and well-known Doctor thanks to his quirk, 'Medical Intuition,' not only giving him minor healing capabilities but also, the ability to instantly understand the healing properties of subjects in one environment.
Aya's mother crouched down, brushing her fingers across Aya's cheek lightly before tucking a strand of hair behind her ear, "Yes honey, everything's alright, don't you worry about a thing." Her mother's smile was contagious, causing the little girl and boy to curl their lips up into a large smile.
The awakening of Aya's brother's quirk was one of the happiest days of the family's life.
Until it wasn't.
That night Aya tossed and turned in her bed, unable to sleep. The excitement of her brother's quirk made her dream of getting hers, thoughts going through her mind, in and out like a takeaway drive through. She wondered what her quirk would be, she was already five and all her classmates already had their very own.
She knew there was an option that she herself, was a late bloomer just like her older brother but she couldn't stand the thought of it.
She wanted her quirk as soon as possible.
Her eyes scrunched shut in an attempt to brush all the thoughts out of her mind so she could get some sleep, however her previously shut eyes fluttered open as soon as she heard a ruckus from outside her bedroom.
"Trey! Get the bucket!" Her mother's voice called out, her tone rushed and not at all quiet despite how late at night it was, "Now!"
Aya sat up and slowly slid off her bed, cautious and curious. She recognised the tone of voice her mother was speaking in.
It was the exact same tone she had used when her brother had swallowed rat poison a year ago.
Aya's body tensed up, the palms of her hands began to sweat as she slowly opened her bedroom door, tiptoeing around the house to look for the location of the yelling.
"Mum..." The young girl called out, the halls were dark, not a single light in the house was on except for one. Her brother's room was dimly lit, light emitting from the crack beneath the door.
The five-year-old didn't waste any time, not wanting to stand around alone in the dark for any longer she dashed toward her brother's room, opening the door and letting herself in, "Dante, are you awake?"
"Aya!" A masculine voice interrupted, causing the girl to jump at the sudden appearance of her father, "What are you doing awake honey?" His eyes were wide, full of worry as he picked the girl up, holding her in his arms.
"I..." Aya looked around the room, she spotted her mother, sitting on the edge of her brother's bed, she wasn't at all focused on her or her father at all. Her only focus was her older brother Dante, "I couldn't sleep... Dad, what's wrong with brother, is he okay?"
The eight-year-old boy was laying in his bed, his chocolate skin looked paler than usual, beads of sweat dripping down his forehead and his breathing ragged.
He did not look well at all.
"Dad!" Aya interrupted the silence unhappy with the lack of response she had received from her father.
"Dante... He's not well," her father spoke up before looking into the girl's eyes and smiling slightly, "Everything's fine, don't worry, let's get you back to bed."
Aya shook her head, no, she did not want to go back to bed. Not until she knew what was wrong with her brother and if he was going to be okay. She shuffled in her father's hold, trying to get out of his arms and run to her brother, "No!"
"Aya please." Her mother spoke softly, her voice hoarse and low, it was as if she had no voice left to begin with. It didn't take Aya long to realise her mother was crying.
"Mother..."
The young girl's eyes widened, her own tears threatening to spill after witnessing the waterfall in her mother's eyes. She stopped wiggling and stayed still, allowing her father to take her back to her room.
"Dad, you're a doctor. Can't you help Dante?"
Her father didn't answer, he remained silent.
He wanted to say something, he wanted to reassure his daughter and say everything would be fine but he knew better. He knew better than to tell plastic promises.
Aya lay in her bed, confused and alert. She wanted to get to the bottom of whatever was happening, she knew better and better was to stay put in bed but it felt like hours that she had been motionless, unable to sleep and process a single thought.
Just because you know better, doesn't mean you know how to act. Aya slipped out of her bedroom once more. Ignoring what she was told.
"I'm not going to stay put..." She mumbled, tiptoeing through the darkness as she hobbled toward her brother's room.
The lights were off, everyone must've been asleep. She took that to her advantage and opened the door, walking inside. "Dante," She whispered, her voice as quiet as she could possibly do, "Are you awake?"
She had received a response from her elder brother but it wasn't a response she was longing for.
The boy had jolted up in his bed, startling the girl as his tired eyes widened, his hand covering his mouth as he let out a fit of dry, raspy coughs.
"Are you okay?" She stood beside her brother's bed, placing her hand to his forehead, "Ow!" Withdrawing her hand she looked around the room, "Want a glass of water? I can get--"
"A-Aya you can't be in here." Her brother choked out a few words in between coughs.
The said girl let out a small breath of air she didn't know she was holding in, "But I wanted to know you were okay."
"No, I'm sick and if y-you," Dante's breath hitched in his throat, eyes widening and liquid spilling out as he reached for his inhaler, using it in an attempt to catch his breath and attempt to ease the difficulty he had breathing, "If you stay here you'll get sick too, so please get out."
Aya shook her head, "I read in a book that idiots don't get sick so I'm staying!"
Her brother rolled his eyes at her response, he never once thought that his sister was an idiot except for right now, "Idiot."
Aya opened her mouth to speak, however, she was cut off due to another coughing fit from her brother. Her brown eyes widened and her legs began to shake in fear once she had noticed a crimson liquid falling from Dante's mouth.
"I don't think that's normal..." She swallowed the lump in her throat, her pupils dilating in worry as her brother hadn't caught his breath. Wheezing and gasping for air to fill his lungs.
He wasn't breathing.
"MUM, DAD!" Aya let her voice be heard, sprinting out of her brother's room and toward her parent's bedroom, alerting them of her presence and telling them what had happened.
Aya's parents, Trey and Melissa didn't have the time and mindset to scold their daughter for not listening, instead, they ran to their little boy's room, standing by his side in an instant.
Aya couldn't bear to watch the scene before her. Her parents were in hysterics as they made every attempt they could to make their son breathe again.
The clock ticked, the sound now glued into Aya's mind, her legs felt weak as she collapsed onto the floor, eyes never leaving the scene before her.
It felt like hours, maybe it had been hours, It was hard for a child to tell how much time had passed but the hysterical sobbing had stopped as soon as a loud gasp for air was heard.
Her brother had taken in a breath of air, he was granted access to live as he greedily took in breaths of oxygen.
A sigh of relief left Aya's lips. Her brother was alive!
The girl ran toward her brother's bed, letting her tears fall from her eyes, "I-I'm so glad!" She sobbed, hugging her brother for a hot minute before she was pulled away from him.
Aya had so many emotions flowing through her body. Sadness, grief, excitement, relief, confusion and curiosity. All those emotions were making it hard for the girl to concentrate.
Her eyes widened as she clutched her head. She was fine a second ago but as of now, her head felt like it would split in two. She was in excruciating pain, a yelp left her lips, tears fell from her brown eyes gaining the attention of her parents.
Her head was spinning as she collapsed onto the ground, looking into the eyes of her parents her vision blurred. Her brown eyes turned a musky shade of green.
Screams left her lips, her whole body felt as if it were going to explode, she did not like this feeling one bit, "What's happening to m...me...?" She gasped, her breath getting caught in her throat as she looked at her mother, their eyes boring into each other.
Right upon making eye contact with her mother, the said woman fell to the ground, her skin was growing green dots and bumps all over, starting from the face.
"G-Girls? What's wrong?" Her father stepped in, causing Aya's eye contact to switch from her mother to her father, upon eye contact the same thing which happened to her mother had happened to her father.
They both had green bumps all over their skin.
"Mum, Dad, I--" Dante rolled over onto his side, facing his parents, his eyes widening at the scene in front of him. About to scream for help until his breath was caught in his throat.
"Brother..." Aya's eyes bore into her brother's once she had heard his voice, gaining her attention.
Aya was terrified, her eyes wide and her hands shaking, she had no idea what was happening, her eyes switched
In an instant, all three of her family members were covered in green bumps on their skin, their breathing was harsh and quick, loud gasps and wheezes for air came from them as Aya switched her gaze between the three.
"Mum!" She cried, inching away from them, "Dad!" Her tears blocked and blurred her vision as she pressed her back against the wall, "Brother!"
"What's happening to all of you!"
The five-year old's own breathing hitched once she had caught glimpse of the three people she loved dearly. Not only were they bleeding from the mouth but from the eyes as well.
"A-Aya..." Her mother spoke, crawling toward the girl, she placed her hand atop of her daughters head and kissed her cheek, "Everything's o-okay..."
Right as her mother's lips had made contact with Aya's skin the woman's skin had paled, turning a ghostly colour before she collapsed onto the floor and drew her last breath, "I love you."
Upon witnessing the death of her own mother, Aya let out a blood-curdling scream, her hands over her face in terror. Her emotions heightening and her eye's turning a darker shade of green.
It wasn't long before the conditions of her father and brother had worsened. Causing them to take their last breaths.
If only she had listened and stayed put.
If she listened everything would be fine.
