Chapter Seven
The walk home was awkward, and all Taehyung could think about was why he just tried to kiss her.
"After this project." He interjected, "I hope we don't become friends."
Jennie slowed her pace beside him. "What the actual frick, Taehyung?"
Clueless, Taehyung looked back to see her stopped in her tracks. "What?"
"You're being confusing." She shook her head in disbelief. She couldn't understand all the mixed signals. "First you do all these sweet things, and then you basically revoke everything you do by something you say. Like." She motions her hands dramatically in the air. "Right now."
He looked at her. She looked at him.
"I'm going home." Jennie turned, walking the other direction back to school.
She was so angry. She was so hurt. She was so confused! How could he act sweet, how could he fake being interested and to just— "Jennie!"
In a black jag, Kai pulls up next to the girl on the sidewalk. "You wanna a ride?" He gives a look at Taehyung briefly before grabbing Jennie's hand from the car window.
"Practice just finished and I was just heading out. Maybe you're on the way?"
She stares at her hand in Kai's, nodding her head 'yes', without lifting her head to see Taehyung as she rode away with Kai.
Kai's car smelt new, and Jennie knew he was all types of wrong for her. He had a girlfriend, and to be honest, he screamed big-bad-boy in green neon lights above his beautiful forehead.
But she acted on hurt and impulse, regretting ditching Taehyung without letting him explain. Without making eye contact to top it all off.
"I broke up with her."
Jennie furrowed her eyebrows as she turned to look at Kai in the driver's seat. "What?"
"She was too clingy."
"But..."
"It's okay. It wasn't special or anything."
"But, is she okay?"
"She will be." Pulling over, he stops in front of her driveway. "Meade St. 127, is this it? Is there anyone home?"
Blinking slowly as she turns away from him, she nods, utterly and completely confused.
"Hey." He gently grabs her wrist before she could open the car door. "If Taehyung ever bothers you too much or anything, you could count on me. I could take you home. Help you with English." He laughs, but Jennie felt her stomach knot, feeling uneasy with his intentions and the general atmosphere she was receiving from him.
"Ok." She smiles quickly. "Thanks." She pulls away from his grasp, opening the car door. "For the ride, I mean."
