Chapter Nine

To say that Kai genuinely gave off rapey vibes the other day was a bit too harsh. But Jennie couldn't deny the knot in her stomach that made her uncomfortable.

It was as if her body was alarming her of the dangers this boy could do to her body, or heart. Whatever it was, it was unnerving.

"Dad I'm leaving!" As she held a blueberry muffin in her mouth, her front door shut behind her with a bang, causing her to drop the muffin, the crumbly top falling into pieces as it rolled down the driveway—stopping right in front of Kai's blinding white adidas shoes.

He smiles at the muffin, kicking it to the grass as he takes the keys out of his pockets, twirling them around.

"Come on." He pushes his butt off the side of his car. "We'll be late to school if you just stand there."

Opening the door for her, she silently nods, biting her lip at his puffy face.

She wouldn't say no to a free ride. She thought it was harmless anyway, they shared first period English. How bad could it be?

As she planted her butt on the leathery seat, he shut her door for her, slightly jog-running to the driver's side where he let out an exhale before entering his own car.

Kai couldn't understand why Jennie made him nervous. He loved how easy it was to talk to her, and how quick witted she'd be to reply to his just as witty comments.

He'd been friends with Jisoo for so long, he thought that the comfort he had with her was feelings of love. When Jennie came, she was all he could think about.

"About yesterday..." he cleared his throat, glancing at Jennie then kept his eyes on the road. "I realized I might've rubbed off as weird."

She laughed. "Ya think?"

He smirked. "I didn't mean to, I swear I'm not always creepy or stalker-ish. I came by this morning to let you know. I couldn't really sleep because I felt like I needed to apologize."

Wow. Jennie thought he was just a pretty face. And despite his unreasonable reason for breaking up with his girlfriend, she felt his intellectual side was quite refreshing.

"Hmm." She hummed, staring outside the car window. Jennie considered this. "I guess you're forgiven."

Kai pulls over, bringing the car into an effortless park. Suddenly, his arms were out and grabbing Jennie into a hug without realizing it.

This surprises her, her heartbeat pounding against her chest.

"Crap. I'm sorry." He smiles, letting her go. She smelled like vanilla. "For some reason I just don't want you to hate me."

How could she have judged him? He's a sweetheart. "No it's okay." She laughed, "You just keep startling me."

"Well we're at school." Turning off the car engine, he swung his arm behind her on the seat, reaching for his backpack.

Jennie stared at the yellow school busses, remembering how Taehyung tripped and flung his textbooks across the pavement.

"Hey. What's wrong?"

Kai asked with genuine concern. When he looked at the direction she was facing, he frowned.

"Look. It's okay. Taehyung's always been after her so you shouldn't feel too down about it."

Clenching her hands into a fist, she unbuckled her seatbelt, getting out of the car.

With the slam of the door, Taehyung looks over, instantly finding Jennie with Kai; his face apologetic as he walks Jisoo underneath his arms into school.

Putting his hands in his pockets, Kai appears beside Jennie.

"If you want, I can pick you up every morning."

Her mouth let's out a tiny gasp. "No, it's fine. I can't."

"No, I insist. You're literally a few blocks over from me."

He lied.

"Oh. Okay." She adjusted her backpack straps. "Thanks."

Remember how Jennie Ruby Jane wanted normal? Her life would be far from it.
