[86] - Trouble Sleeping
look, i started this fic ages ago and then forgot about it
Warnings: nightmares, a lot of fluff
--
Logan woke up with his heart racing and his breath caught in his throat. He spied out into the dark, trying to shake the images of the dream from his mind, and he hesitated for several moments before reaching his arm out from beneath the covers to turn the night light on, and then grabbing his glasses, putting those on to actually be able to tell if something was in his room. Of course the light did not uncover any demons or monsters in any corner of his room, just like he knew it wouldn't. It was highly illogical that he would have nightmares about things that he didn't for one second believe existed, yet here he was.
He closed his eyes for a moment, taking deep breaths to attempt to calm his beating heart. It worked somewhat, but he wasn't sure he'd manage to fall asleep anytime soon. Every time he closed his eyes his mind slipped back to thinking of the dream and he started to feel as if he was being observed by something. Opening his eyes he, once again, confirmed that he was the only living thing in his room. Then he, to his dismay, realized that he was extremely thirsty.
Now that fact would not leave him alone, and after a minute of consideration and sulking he decided that the best thing to do were to just get to the kitchen and drink some water.
Maybe after that he'd manage to sleep.
Reluctantly he slipped out from beneath his covers, leaving the warmth and security of his bed. He quietly made it through the corridor towards the stairs, internally repeating 'your fears are illogical, they defy everything you stand for. There is no possibility that the things that frighten you even exists,' as a silent mantra, trying to drown out the thoughts of what could be hiding in the dark. Thought that did not help much when he saw a movement from someone who was already in the kitchen, making him stop dead in his tracks while panic made him freeze right there.
"Hey Logan, what're you still doing up?" A voice said, and Logan almost felt dizzy with relief.
Virgil, it was Virgil. Not a demon here to kill him, just his boyfriend up late.
"V- Virgil." Logan stuttered out, relieved that it was only him, and slightly annoyed that Virgil had managed to scare him so much. This just proved how irrational and stupid his fears were. He took a breath, yet again aware of the need to breathe air into his lungs, something that he had momentarily forgot in the midst of thinking something horrible had been hiding in the dark, just waiting for a moment to murder him.
"Are you alright?"
"Ye- yeah, I'm... I'm fine." Logan mumbled, keeping his gaze lowered as he walked past Virgil and grabbed his Sherlock cup. Earlier he'd left on top of the microwave, and now he filled it with water and then quickly emptying it, taking big gulps. He filled it again and drank it all, then feeling satisfied. He could hear Virgil coming up behind him so he put his cup down on the bench and turned around.
Virgil reached for Logan's hand, grasping it loosely in his, giving him the option to pull his hand back if he didn't want to be touched. Logan squeezed his hand, both to reassure him that he hadn't got any problem with Virgil touching him, and because it felt nice, safe, to hold his hand.
"You know you can always come to me if you're having trouble sleeping, right?" He said, and Logan shrugged weakly.
"It... it did not seem right to burden you, and I know that this is temporary. When I am under a lot of stress I tend to have my sleep interrupted by bad dreams." He said after a moment of searching for the right words. Virgil frowned, it was clear that he didn't like to hear that. Logan could agree that it wasn't good that he was stressed and not sleeping well because of it, but it was nothing that Virgil should have to worry about.
"Nightmares?" Said trait asked, and Logan gave him a short, confirming, nod.
"You could've told me, Logan. You're never bothering me, okay?" He said, leaned in and kissed his cheek, resting his hands on Logan's shoulders.
"Okay." Logan replied, avoiding to point out that Virgil himself was even worse at asking for any sort of help since he too did not want to burden others.
"Would you want to spend the rest of the night with me?" Virgil asked, then growing flustered a mere moment later when realizing what that might have sounded like he implied.
"I-" Logan began, at first going to decline just to make sure that he would not disturb Virgil anymore while sleeping, but he saw the small smile on Virgil's lips, the hope in his eyes that he had obviously tried to hide by how casually he had asked, so Logan decided that he might as well just accept and hope that he'd be allowed to sleep the rest of the night undisturbed, "alright. It sounds like a lovely idea."
Virgil's tiny smile brightened a considerable amount, and seeing that made it all worth it, and Virgil began to pull Logan with him to his room. Logan sighed fondly, he had no problem with sharing a bed with Virgil. It was actually something that he cherished because it was a fairly rare thing to happen. The few times they had spent the night together Virgil had been surprisingly cuddly, Logan loved it since they weren't very affectionate around the others. Their affection was something only between the two of them, and they liked having it that way.
Virgil closed the door behind them and Logan went straight to Virgil's bed, sitting down on it while Virgil changed to his pajamas. He took his glasses off, placing them on the bedside table, on top of a book that Virgil had borrowed from him a while ago. He rubbed his tired eyes, then blinking to regain his focus, which failed since his glasses weren't on his face. Virgil walked up to him, ran a hand through his hair and kissed his forehead, then a small peck on his lips, leaving him with messy hair and a small smile.
"Lets get some rest now." Virgil murmured, climbing into bed next to Logan, urging him to lie down too. Logan did, then pulling the covers over the both of them. Virgil inched closer and Logan took this opportunity to cup his face and kiss him properly, their lips slowly moving together. Then they parted and Virgil sleepily blinked at him with a soft smile playing on his lips. Logan's heart felt like it swelled, and he was yet again hit with a moment where he couldn't fully fathom how much he loved the side in front of him.
"Thank you." He mumbled quietly, Virgil only let out a confused hum and Logan rolled over onto his back, "thank you for always being here for me, even if I'm annoying or slow to understand certain things, such as feelings. Thank you for loving me despite all my shortcomings and flaws."
Virgil tilted his head in a cutesy way, smile still there as he once again ran his fingers through Logan's hair, playing with it, slightly tugging at the strands. In this moment almost all the previous stress he had felt had melted away, though Logan new it was still there and would attack him at any moment it seemed fitting.
"Of course, Logan. I don't think there will ever come a day where I won't love you. I will always be here for you no matter what you need." He said, as it was the most obvious thing in the world.
Logan was so lucky. So incredibly lucky to have someone like Virgil in his life. So lucky that Virgil loved him just as much as he loved Virgil.
"I hope you know how much I love you, because I don't think I can express it with words even with all the languages in this world." Logan said, ignoring how his voice trembled a little. Virgil smiled and cuddled closer to him, still with a hand tangled in his hair, and Logan felt more content with life than he had for weeks now. Logan made a mental note to try to tell Virgil more often how much he meant to him, he wasn't always the best at properly expressing how much he felt for Virgil.
And with Virgil slowly falling asleep next to him Logan didn't find it hard at all to let unconsciousness and dreams take over yet again.
--
His eyes opened and he blinked out in the dark. It took him a few seconds to realize where he was, because the first thing he fathomed was that it clearly wasn't his bed he was lying in. Then he remembered Virgil's offer to sleep in his room. Virgil. A wave of fear hit Logan, waking him up a bit from his hazy and tired state, because what if Virgil wasn't there?
"Virgil?" Logan mumbled, his voice thick with sleep. He had to make sure that Virgil was still there with him. As a reply he felt Virgil throw an arm around his waist and cuddle up to him, his chest pressed against Logan's back. He felt Virgil's hot breath ghosting over his skin before warm lips were pressed to the nape of his neck, only for a second. Logan fumbled for his hand, entwining their fingers when he found it, then bringing it up to his lips so that he could kiss the back of it.
"Nightmare again?" Came the question, and Logan didn't want to answer him, instead he just sighed quietly and squeezed Virgil's hand, holding it close to his chest.
"Do you want to tell me about it?" Virgil murmured and a second later Logan felt a small kiss being pressed against his shoulder.
"No." His voice was barely a whisper, but it didn't matter, Virgil could hear him anyway. Then Virgil's warm body moved away, his hand letting go of Logan's, and Logan could hear a faint click. The room was suddenly bathing in a low purple light, Virgil must have turned his nightlight on. He felt Virgil's hand on his shoulder, rolling him so that he was lying on his back. He looked away, but he knew Virgil could read on him exactly how he felt.
"I'm fine." He mumbled, still not looking at Virgil. Didn't want to see Virgil see right through his lie. But Virgil didn't demand anything from him, he didn't try to convince Logan to tell him about the dream, he didn't even pushing him into actually feeling fine. He just laid down next to him again, kissing his cheek and then pulling the covers over the two of them. Logan inched closer to Virgil, his warmth and the safety of having another person, specifically Virgil, right next to him.
"Just give me a moment." Logan continued, knowing that he just needed a few minutes to calm down. Virgil brushed a hand softly against his cheek, a calming gesture.
"Of course, Lo, all the time you need." He said, and Logan smiled faintly, a small blush creeping up on his face and he was glad that Virgil couldn't see it since the room was still fairly dark despite the night light. The wretched feeling in his stomach melted away as he laid there with Virgil, he started to feel content in Virgil's arms, the images of his dream fading until they were thoughts that he could easily push away and no longer threatened to consume him.
"I feel ridiculously safe in your presence, as if I am safe only because I am not alone, which of course is stupid, but helpful nonetheless." He mumbled again after a minute or two, not sure if Virgil was still awake and could even hear him. He then saw Virgil's lips curl upwards, forming a small smile, which told Logan that his boyfriend had not yet succumbed to unconsciousness.
"Good. You make me feel safe too. Company usually does that." Virgil said, eyes opening the slightest bit to look at him. Logan smiled lovingly at him, then allowed his heavy eyelids to close. He could feel Virgil shift beside him, and then a pair of soft lips that brushed against his forehead.
Virgil's hand found his again and Logan grasped it, their fingers entwining. He was certain that Virgil would insist on talking through everything that stressed him tomorrow, and it was likely that he would also be lectured about letting his stress reach this point. Though for now he tried not to worry about anything.
The two of them had a few hours left until they had to start their day, and Logan wanted to savour them, and hopefully get some more sleep. He opened his eyes the slightest bit, Virgil seemed to already have fallen back into his slumber, and Logan observed him with a tiny smile. He felt bad for having caused Virgil to wake up, but he was happy to know he had someone who was always there for him. Someone who, even though Logan could not at all understand why, loved him.
Logan silently promised to make this up to him, and to in the future manage his stress more conveniently so that Virgil would not have to worry about him. Virgil mumbled something in his sleep, Logan had no idea what he'd said, but it sounded adorable and he breathed out a quiet giggle.
The last thing he wanted was to wake him yet again, so he once again closed his eyes and fell asleep to the quiet and the sound of Virgil's slow breaths.
