"Is this really a good idea?" Virgil whispered-hissed.
"Yes, Virgil, quietly now." Logan said lowly, pulling at his arm before slowly opening the door to Roman's room. Out of the corner of his eye he saw Virgil roll his eyes and he could practically hear him think 'as if I don't know that'. Virgil followed him into Roman's room and through it, towards the door to the imagination.
Virgil looked incredibly tense and as if he expected them to be caught any moment and Logan would admit that he was not feeling the most relaxed either, this was not something he did often.
Only now and then.
He almost stumbled over something on Roman's floor, feeling Virgil's hand grab onto the back of his shirt to steady him. Logan glanced back at Virgil who gave him an exasperated glare, shaking his head. Logan turned his head back towards the door which he had reached. He reached a hand out and opened it carefully, glancing back out over the room, towards the doorless doorway across the room that led to the smaller room where Roman had his bed.
He held the door open for Virgil who quickly passed through, waiting on the grass outside in the imagination.
"I cannot believe you talked me into this." Virgil whispered loudly as the door had been closed behind them.
"Well. We are doing nothing wrong. Everyone is allowed in the imagination and even if Roman may not want us to be entering his room while he is asleep, well, what he does not know will not hurt him. In this case, at least." Logan said, already walking away from the door. He head Virgil huff and then the sound of his footsteps in the grass as he followed.
It was night time in the imagination too as Roman had set it to follow the day as Thomas was experiencing it, nearing one in the morning to be precise. The stars were bright in the sky, brighter than they'd ever be in the city where Thomas lived.
Virgil hurried up beside Logan, matching his pace. He saw how Virgil looked up, his mouth making an 'o' shape as he saw the sky, seeing how pretty it was. Neither of them said anything for a few minutes, continuing on their way out onto the centre of a field. Logan stopped, Virgil continuing two steps forward because he once again had his eyes on the sky and didn't see where he was going or that Logan had stopped. Then he looked back at Logan.
"So this is what you do at night when we aren't hanging out?" Virgil had an eyebrow raised and looked right at him, though as soon as Logan met his eyes Virgil fixed his gaze on the sky again.
"Whenever I feel the need to, yes." Logan said, not elaborating any further. This is what he did whenever he found himself too overwhelmed with stress to sleep, or at the times he managed to overwork himself to the point of even him realizing he needed a break.
Neither of those were the reasons for tonight though, tonight he was here because he had recently found out about his and Virgil's mutual interest in stars and he thought that Virgil would appreciate this.
Since the both of them had an unhealthy habit of staying up rather late they had somehow started to spend their sleepless nights together, at first only sitting together in the living room doing their own thing. Then after a while ending up in long conversations ranging between numerous topics.
At one point these nights had even stopped taking place in the living room and instead been moved to Logan's bedroom where there was less of a chance that anyone would walk in on them and scold them for being up so late (aka, they didn't want to risk Patton seeing them and going into 'dad mode').
Logan had become very comfortable around Virgil, more so than he'd ever planned to since feelings of any sort were distracting and not productive in the least, but by now he had to admit that Virgil was his closest friend.
"It's very... beautiful out here." Virgil said quietly after a while of silence that Logan hadn't wanted to disturb.
"It is, isn't it?" Logan smiled, eyes averting from Virgil and he took in the sight of the clear night sky above. Virgil bent down and touched the ground, presumably to make sure it wasn't damp, then lying down in the grass. His hood was up and his fringe almost covered his eyes but Logan still thought the stars might actually be reflecting in his eyes. Which was a thought that made Logan's face feel a little hot, strangely enough as the night was cool.
"Yeah. It's nice being out here. Even if it is stupid to sneak out here, Roman would probably be pissed if he found out, why wouldn't he be? Crap, he'll find out somehow-" Virgil said with an increasingly worried tone of voice. Logan sat down next to where he was lying, putting a hand on his shoulder.
"I hardly think Roman would mind. We have not bothered him nor touched any of his things. Using the imagination to stargaze cannot be something he would refuse us. You know how he is, he'd probably encourage us." Logan said, easily being able to imagine how Roman would mildly tease them for doing such a thing as stargazing together.
"Yeah. I guess. Thanks." Virgil mumbled.
"Can you point out any constellations?" Logan asked, and Virgil remained quiet for a moment before saying anything.
"Not really... I haven't been stargazing like this before, haven't had a chance to learn how to spot them." Virgil said. Logan raised his hand to the sky, pointing at a constellation.
"That's Orion, those three stars in a line form Orion's belt." Logan said, listening to see if Virgil was following or not. If Virgil wanted him to them Logan would gladly ramble on about the constellations he knew how to spot.
"Um... where?" Virgil said hesitantly and Logan moved closer, head right next to Virgil's to see where he was pointing from Virgil's view. He pointed again, waiting for Virgil's affirmation that he saw it.
"Uh..." Virgil raised his hand too, pointing but not at Orion.
"Here, let me-" Logan wrapped his fingers around Virgil's hand, moving it a little to the left, until his index finger pointed correctly, "do you see it?"
"Oh, yeah, I do!" Logan glanced at Virgil, seeing his smile and forgot completely that perhaps he should be letting go of Virgil's hand now. Instead he guided Virgil's hand towards another group of stars. With his free hand he conjured up a picture of the little dipper, showing it to Virgil for him to know what he was supposed to be looking for.
"This is the little dipper, can you see where it is?" Logan asked. Virgil looked at the photo and then at where Logan was making his hand point.
"I think so." Virgil lowered his hand which Logan was still holding onto, but he didn't pull away from Logan's grip even if it was loose.
Logan saw Virgil glance at him and he went quiet, not continuing talking even if he had many more constellations he would gladly show Virgil. Maybe it was because this might be the most relaxed Logan had ever seen the side next to him, he didn't want to do or say anything that would remove that soft little smile which had Logan quite sure the feeling he was experiencing was brand new, at least to him.
"Hey, man, uh, thanks for bringing me out here. I may not know nearly as much about stars as you do but it's really calming to just be lying here." Virgil's fingers intertwined with Logan's and he had to take a whole three seconds to remember how to breathe before he could respond.
"It's no problem, Virgil. I am glad you're enjoying yourself."
Before they knew it they'd already spent over an hour lying there under the stars, Logan's wrist watch reminded them but he pretended he wasn't aware of the passage of time, far too comfortable lying there under their shared blanket that he'd conjured up a while ago after Virgil had mentioned that it was beginning to get cold.
Logan hadn't felt cold at all but Virgil had offered to share the big blanket and Logan had found himself accepting the kind offer.
They had let go of each other while struggling to wrap themselves in the blanket but Virgil's hand had somehow found his again, and while they were laying there under the stars, talking softly about everything between them, the stars, and beyond, Logan began to think that whatever this feeling he felt for Virgil was, well...
He didn't mind much that Virgil's smile made him smile too, or that his touch had his heart beating that little quicker, or even how Virgil was recently always on his mind. Maybe he would in the morning. Panic a bit about this new feeling, that is.
But he'd gladly stay out here and enjoy the night with Virgil until the sun rose.
