Soulmate au - you touch your soulmate and see color
--
When Logan found his seat on the train, put his baggage away and sat down with his book, music playing in his earbuds, he expected to be bored. Perhaps not immediately but he was bound to become restless after a while, he was going to sit in the same seat for five hours.
Actually, Logan now realized, he was definitely going to be bored since he would easily finish his book in five hours. Why he hadn't brought another one was beyond him. He always ended up forgetting something important. Well, Logan supposed it was better to have forgotten something for entertainment than something like his keys or his wallet.
However, the last thing Logan had expected was to meet his so-called soulmate.
More and more people boarded the train, though thankfully there were only two other people who sat close to Logan, which meant he had the seat next to him empty. He preferred it like that, that meant he didn't have to balance his stuff in his lap the whole way.
Logan put his stuff down, wanting to have his hands free. He looked out the window, only seeing the train station and stressed people hurrying past while talking on the phone and dragging suitcases. A movement close to Logan grabbed his attention.
A really tired looking man that was probably around Logan's own age suddenly stood practically in front of Logan. He was putting his baggage away, then squinting down at his ticket, most likely checking his seat number. He looked up, eyes fixing on the seat next to Logan.
"Apologies." Logan said, quickly moving his book and his phone into his lap instead. The man mumbled a quiet thanks and then sat down, immediately plugging his headphones into his phone.
Logan doubted that his seat neighbour was very chatty, but just in case he opened his book and began to read, appearing as unsociable and busy as he could. Luckily Logan’s assumption of the stranger had been right because all he did was turn up his music loud enough for Logan to hear and lean back with closed eyes.
Logan kept reading for at least half an hour, getting very into the book and forgetting all of his surroundings. At least until something leant against his shoulder. Or rather, someone, Logan realized as he was forcibly pulled back into reality, almost confused where he was for a second.
Logan shifted slightly, the strangers head moving slightly and his forehead brushing against Logan's arm just where his t-shirt collar didn't cover.
In an instant it was as if all the gray melted away from his vision, being replaced by many, many colors and shades that Logan had never before seen.
His breath caught in his throat and he stared at everything around him, a kind of excitement rushing through him. Said excitement was because of how captivating all these new colors were, not as much at the thought of a soulmate.
Soulmate. Logan had almost forgotten for a second the reason why he could suddenly see colors where there previously had been none visible to him, and he flustered at the thought that the stranger leaning against him in his sleep was most likely his soulmate.
Logan found it unnecessary to wake him up to inform him of this though, maybe he needed the sleep, and Logan was quite captivated by all of the colors outside of the trains window anyway. He carefully picked his phone up, typing in the password and then being surprised by the intensity of his background. It had the same color as the sun, only what must be a darker shade of the color. So, Logan thought to himself, that's what yellow looks like.
At least he'd heard all his life that the sun was yellow, grass was green, the sea was blue.
He looked out the window again, staring up at the sky. Then he turned back to his phone and made a quick search on the color blue. That was the name of the color of the sky, as far as Logan knew, though he doubted everyone around him who could see colors had lied to him since he was a kid.
He compared a google image of pale blue to the blue of the sky, trying to wrap his mind around the fact that there were so many different kinds of blue. Logan is quick to decide that he rather enjoys blue, and happy to realize his tie is a dark shade of just that color.
He glanced towards he who Logan decides to simply call 'soulmate' as he doesn't know his name yet. The stranger is colorful, well, more colorful than Logan is. He's got dyed hair and his hands that are clutching his phone has painted nails. Black, glittery, nail polish that glimmer in different colors depending on how the light hits.
He's got black makeup under his eyes, wearing his makeup in a way Logan hasn't seen anyone else. He's wearing a black hoodie with patches in the same color as his hair, though the shade is slightly different.
Logan looked at his soulmates face again, seeing that he was no longer asleep and instead gave Logan a confused stare as if he was very unsure how he'd ended up leaning against him and wondering how he should now react. He awkwardly sat up straight, eyes locking with Logans.
And, oh, Logan did not know the name of the color of his soulmates eyes yet, but he sure thought they were pretty.
"Hello." Logan breathed, unsure if there was a better thing to say. Logan had a strong urge to thank the stranger for giving him the ability to see colors, though he supposed there were more important things to say first. "My name is Logan."
"Hey, uh, can you see colors now too, or...?" He asked nervously. Logan nodded, tearing his eyes away from his soulmates and instead looking at his hair, taking his chance to ask about it.
"Your hair… what color is that?"
"Purple, but I don't know how purple looks yet." He said with the slightest of smiles. Purple. Logan decided he liked that color too. His soulmate turned his head slightly, looking down at his hand as he untangled it from his headphones. Logan's attention was immediately caught by a small sparkling stone in his earlobe.
"What color are your earrings?" Logan asked before he could stop himself. Maybe he was being a little too excited about his newfound ability to see more colors than white, grey, and black. His soulmate didn’t seem to mind, though.
"Oh. I don't know, actually. Just chose them because they sparkled." He confessed, flustering slightly and for the first time Logan saw what color a blush actually was. That must be pink then. People always said blushes were pink, or red.
"Figured I had to look sparkly as an art teacher. Well, mostly just wanted to look sparkly, not really because of my job." He shrugged, briefly touching his earring.
"An art teacher who can't see color? Interesting."
"Not anymore, thanks to you." His lips curled into a smirk that made Logan feel as if his heart got distracted and accidentally skipped a beat. He didn't even know this man's name yet and was already getting too focused on how pretty he was. Logan got the feeling he was going to fall hard and fast, and he found that he didn't quite mind that.
"Sorry, what's your name?" Logan said, having to ask.
"Oh, shoot, yeah my name is Virgil. Probably should've introduced myself way earlier." He said, grinning nervously, glittery nails tapping against the screen of his phone. Logan caught himself in time, almost having said 'a pretty name to match with a pretty face'. Fuck.
"What do you work as, then?" Virgil asked, ending the silence that had fallen between them as Logan tired to hide just how much of a disastrous homosexual he (at least internally) was.
"Well, I'm a teacher too, a college professor to be more precise, I teach math, history, and english. Oh, and I sometimes substitute as a music teacher." Logan said. Virgil nodded thoughtfully before once again looking right into Logan's eyes (which only made Logan once again get slightly lost in those bright eyes).
"Nice to meet you Logan. I'm actually studying to become a music teacher too, so soon I'll be teaching two subjects. One more exam to go." Virgil said cheerfully, holding his hand out. Logan shook it as well as he could while they were both sitting in seats that did not face each other.
"Hang on," Virgil stood up, still having a tight grip on Logan's hand as he moved over to sit at the empty seat opposite of Logan, "there, making this easier. Now we won't have sore necks tomorrow after having sat with our heads turned for hours."
"Smart thinking." Logan said, returning Virgil's bright smile and looking into his bright eyes. Virgil was somehow almost brighter than their surroundings, despite being dressed in mostly dark colors.
They were both equally as flustered when looking down at their hands realizing they were still holding onto the other, never having let go as their handshake had ended. They both quickly let go of each other, and there was a moment of silence between them which Logan used to push his glasses up and straighten his tie.
A moment later they had somehow gotten in on talking about books, Virgil listening much more attentively than Logan was used to as he told him about the book series he was reading.
Logan never would've thought he'd enjoy talking for longer than five minutes with a stranger, but Virgil certainly proved him otherwise as they ended up talking for the entire remainder of the train ride.
They exchanged numbers too, not only words, and they most definitely agreed on meeting again, soon, maybe just to hang out, or perhaps to go on a date together.
