Chapter 8: Old Coffee Shops
Chapter 8: Old Coffee Shops
Spider Man’s Point of View
This can’t be happening. Jade is Viper? She just yelled at the Captain and now I’m just trying to process it all. I walk over to the side of the plane, because… I just can’t look at her right now.
***
Once we land I sprint off the jet and run down the hallway. I don’t exactly know where I’m going, but I don’t want to answer any questions about Jade or from her. I find myself in the control room. Fury stands above everyone and they all look towards me as I sprint in.
“Spider Man, did you apprehend Viper?” Director Fury asks me.
“Uh, yeah, they’re collecting her weapons now.” I tell him. “Good work, I knew bringing you on would be a good idea. Hill and I will be down in a minute.” He says, turning back to the monitors. I look to one of the screens and see it’s a security camera view. Jade whips around and looks at Rogers. She says something and turns around. I really hope she cooperates; I need to talk to her, alone somehow. Not wanting to face Fury, I walk to his second in command, Agent Maria Hill.
“I’m actually going to head back to my room.” I tell her.
“Sure thing.” She replies and goes back to her work. Rushing out of the room I end up running back to the room assigned to me when I was called in. I pull off my mask and run my finger through my hair. I don’t even know what to think right now. Jade is Viper! One of my closest friends is an international masked criminal. Viper has been around for about 3 years and I’ve known Jade that long! How could I not see it? Granted I haven’t seen her in about a year, but that thing with Harry and… Gwen happened and… No! I can’t dwell on the past. Now I just need to figure out what I’m going to do about Jade. She was such a good friend and helped me so much when Uncle Ben died. Then I just drop her when everything happened. How could I have been so stupid?! You’re not the only one with a messed up life Peter! But I can’t possibly trust her now… Can I? She was Viper when I knew her, and hopefully she’s still Jade. I… I should hear her out, see why she became Viper. But she won’t trust Spider Man; she might not even trust Peter Parker. I have to try though. She’s trusted me with her secrets before; I’m going to have to trust her with mine, even if Fury wraps me up in my own webbing for talking to her. I just have to get her alone. Away from camera and everything. I walk to the bathroom and rinse my face. I hear a knock on the door and then it creak open.
“Peter?” a voice asks. Walking back into the room, I see Rogers standing in the door way.
“Yeah Cap?” I ask grabbing my mask.
“Viper’s interrogation is about to start, do you want to come?” he asks. I have to keep my cool. No one can know what she means to me. I have to act indifferent towards her.
“Sure.” I reply and walk out with him. We’re walking down the fall towards her room. Breaking the silence, Steve asks,
“Do you know her?”
“What?” I ask.
“On the jet, you said her name. Actually jogged Clint’s mind as well.” Trying to avoid the question, I ask,
“Wait, Clint knows her? How?” I actually didn’t know this. After turning away from her, I blocked everything else out so I could think.
“Yeah, he said he met her at a bookstore today. Said her name was Jade Leiton. Ring any bells for you?” he finishes. Okay, I’m not going to be able to keep this up for long, and I really can’t lie to America’s Boy Scout.
“Let’s just say she’s an old friend.” I tell him. We reach the room and walk in . I look out the window and see Jade sitting in front of a table. After a few minutes she yells
"Yo! We gonna do this or what?” No one moves and she continues, “Oh, c’mon guys I got places to be, things to do!” She starts laughing. “Okay maybe that last sentence wasn’t true. But still! Let’s get this show on the road!” She always was kind of impatient. Next, Fury walks into the room and she looks him up and down. “Sup.” She says. I smile. She may be a criminal, but man did I miss her. While Fury continues with the interrogation, I look around the room. Natasha and Clint stand off to the side; Natasha’s arm finally bandaged up. Tony, out of his mangled suit, stands next to Dr. Banner as they whisper back and forth. I hear Agent Hill catching Thor up on everything that’s happened and Steve stands next to me. We all stare out the window at Jade. As Fury explains everything to Jade he concludes with,
“…Thankfully though, my executive decision of bringing Spider Man is what caught you.” I feel everyone looking at me; even Jade manages to find me through the double sided glass. Looking at the window she asks,
“Executive decision? As in, no one else wanted Sticky Fingers here?”
“It was hard enough getting them to work as a team the first time. When I suggested another team member, all hell broke loose.” Fury explains. Jade turns back to him. I look around the room. Everyone avoids my gaze. I knew no one, but I didn’t think it was that bad.
“Don’t worry about it Peter. You should have seen us before New York happened.” Rogers reassures me. I see Stark smirk at Steve’s comment and relax a bit.
“What is the diamond for?” Fury asks.
“I don’t know.” Jade replies dryly. I look to my left and see Steve rolling his eyes as he turns away from the glass. As the interrogation goes on, Fury keeps asking questions, that Jade answers casually. It’s when Fury starts assuming things that Jade gets mad at. She hates false judgment and always gives her opinion about it. That’s actually how we met.
*Flashback*
Sitting in the coffee shop by my house, I sip at my coffee and type away at my computer. After about 20 minutes of writing, I get up to get a refill on my coffee. On my way, I bump into a girl. Looking down at her, she looks to be in her early twenties and she wears thick black glasses and is reading an old tattered book.
“Uh, sorry.” She says, barley glancing up.
“No problem. Are you enjoying your book?” I ask.
“Have you read it?” she asks, finally looking up at me.
“No, I’m just assuming it’s good enough for you to walk into people.”
“Well you don’t know that, I could just be so horrified by it, that I can’t look away,” she says putting a hand on her hip.
“I don’t know, you don’t seem like the kind of girl who would do that. You know how to pull away.”
“Oh and you know me so well.”
“Well you have the old book, thick glasses, and you seem kind of clumsy.” She smiles at this, except it seems more like a mocking one.
“Right, well you have an old book bag,” she starts, gesturing to my bag, “thick glasses, as well, and you seem kind of nerdy.”
“Alright, I see your point. Let’s start over. Hi, I’m Peter.”
“Jade."
