Chapter 21: If Only I Wasn't Blind!
Chapter 21: If Only I Wasn't Blind!
The helicopter lands on the roof of Avengers Tower and I’m still blind. This time, Barton takes Peter while Rogers helps me again. I unbuckle, stand and turn to move, but Rogers picks me up again and jumps out of the helicopter. Again I grabbed his neck as he jumps off the copter. When he lets go I turn and begin slowly walking.
“We just got you here and I’m not gonna let you get away by walking off the roof.” Rogers says as he grabs me by my waist. I let out an “Ooff!” when he throws me over his shoulder.
“Was the necessary?” I ask as he continues walking. He simply replies back.
“You’re lighter than I thought.” I pick up my head and give a confused expression. My mask is still on, so I take it off and say,
“Hey, can one of you take this?” I feel it leave my hand and drop my arm. “Oh and Captain,” I continue, “was that remark an insult or compliment?”
“It was a miscalculation.” He says dryly. I think we’re inside now because I don’t hear the noise New York produces anymore. Then Spangles stops walking and I hear a ding. He takes a few steps, stops again, and turns. When he turns, I manage to hit something with my head, which cause an “Ow!” from me and whoever I hit.
“Watch it Leiton!” Stark says. His voice doesn’t staticy anymore and since I’m pretty sure I hit his head with my own, he took his helmet off.
“It’s not my fault Metal Head!” He’s the one who’s driving.” I say poking Cap in the back. I hear another ding and then a shift downward. “Are we in an elevator?” I ask.
“You are indeed.” I hear a British voice say.
“Since when is one of you British?” I ask completely baffled at who is talking.
“That’s JARVIS, Tony’s electronic butler.” Banner says. I’d also like to think he’s the one who took my mask. Rogers readjusts me on his shoulder which pushes another “Ooff!” out of me. Damn, what’s with him? Seriously, I feel like Fiona in Shreck when Shrek kidnaps her. Is this considered kidnapping? Sure I’ve done some bad things, but they have no right to come and take me without an arrest warrant. I hear a few chuckles and then Thor saying,
“Fiona and Shrek? I do not know these Midgardians.”
“It’s a movie, Thor. Shrek being am ogre and kidnapping Princess Fiona in the manner Capsicle happens to be holding Viper.” Stark explains. I let my head fall and lean against Caps back, in realization I said that out loud.
“Would any of you know a good psychiatrist?” I mumble against Rogers back, as I hear another ding and he begins to walk again.
“Not Bruce.” Stark says.
“I told you, I’m not that kind of doctor!” Banner protests.
“I don’t even want to know.” I say. Rogers continues walking and gently places me on the floor. He guides me backwards and makes me sit down on what feels like a couch.
“Stay here.” He says sternly.
“Wasn’t planning on going anywhere!” I shout as I hear his footsteps leave. I bring my legs up and sit cross legged as I wait. Sitting in the silence, I hear the Avengers talking.
“What’s the plan with Leiton?” I hear Stark, I think, say.
“We’ll have to get her medical help. I think I can manage her, but Peter… She cut him with a serum, a poison that I don’t know of.” Banner says.
“Do we really want Leiton to see again though?” Widow asks.
“Natasha, we don’t know what the knock-out serum is doing to her. She could be permanently blind for all we know.” Barton says, his voice growing quieter on the last part, but I still heard him. I’m sure I could fix this myself, if only I could see!
“I would hate to have caused this for Lady Viper.” Thor says It’s not his fault, he didn’t know this would have happened to me. Hell, I wouldn’t have without knowing all the ingredients. They continue.
“I say we get Leiton and Peter to Bruce’s lab. Once Viper is well, she can help heal Peter” Rogers says.
“How do we know that Leiton’ll help the kid? She did do it to him after all.” Red says.
“No she wouldn’t do that. We all saw how they acted when we ate. Leiton cares about Peter; she’ll help him.” Banner reassures her. He’s right. I will help him. I only cut him because I couldn’t fight him and it’s not like he’ll be out for long. Peter will wake up in a few hours, if he still isn’t by the time I can see again, I can give him some of the medicine I’ve made that I keep in my belt.
“Alright, so say she can see again, and she helps the kid, what then?” Stark asks.
“We continue with the original plan.” Rogers finalizes. There’s a silence for a moment and I wait for them to continue talking, but they don’t. Growing tired, I lie down on my stomach and rest my head on my forearms. Finding it uncomfortable lying on my arrows, I sit up and remove the straps. I lean forward in search of a coffee table in front of the couch. I find one and gently place the straps on the table, careful not to make a sound. That’s when I hear talking again.
“Steve, Clint, could you bring Viper and Peter to my lab.” I believe Banner says. “Tony would you mind helping?”
“I will when I get out of this suit.” He says. I lay down again and wait. I hear stark’s footsteps come through the room I’m in. “Comfy?” He asks, rather sarcastically.
“Indeed.” I say as I hear his boots clank away and a door shut. I’ve heard other footsteps along with the ding of the elevator as I think everyone left. Then I hear what I think is 3 sets of footsteps walking up to me.
“Alright Viper, we’re going to take you to Dr. Banner’s lab and see what we can do about your vision.” Roger informs me, although I already know.
“Okay.” I say sitting up and standing. Apparently Spangles was standing right by me because when I stand, I bump into him. Before I can fall back on the couch though, he catches me by my shoulders.
“Now am I going to have to pat you down again, or will you cooperate?” He asks. I stand up straight, Caps hands still on my shoulders, and unbuckle my utility belt. I hold it up for him to take and he does so, while saying, “Bruce why don’t you take her weapons. We’ll have Tony, Nat and Clint go over them later.” Rogers grabs my hips and I plant my hands on his chest to stop him.
“If you plan on throwing me over your shoulder again, I think I’d rather take my chances walking and running into things.” I say.
“Okay.” He simply replies while letting go. The next thing I know my feet are taken out from under me. Not fully understanding what’s going on I grab whatever’s in my reach which happens to be Rogers’ neck. I pull myself to him in an attempt to not fall when I realize he’s picked me up. He clears his throat and starts walking. I relax as we go and he carry’s me, one arm under my knees and the other holding my back. “It’s not that I wouldn’t mind seeing you run into things, but Tony’s upset enough with you and I don’t think you want him too mad at you.” He says walking to the elevator I presume.
“Geez, and I thought you were supposed to be a gentlemen.” I say as I hear Banner and Barton step inside and hit a button.
“I am holding you, aren’t I?” He says as the doors close.
“Hey so why does the genetically enhanced super strength soldier get to carry the 100-pound girl and I’m stuck lugging around 200 pounds of dead wait?” Barton asks. I laugh at his point and at the fact that he thinks I’m 100 pounds. I might be tiny, but I am so not 100 pounds.
“I’d hope not, you’re what? 5’3? 100 pounds would mean your underweight.” Banner says. I let my head hand back and give an “Ugghhh…” The elevator dings and they all walk out. I hear doors slide open and then feel cold metal under me as Rogers sets me down. “So, how much do you weigh?” Banner asks.
“Wow you must kill the ladies with that one.” I say sitting crossed legged on the table.
“Oh, uh, no I didn’t mean… It’s just for your medical record. I can’t work on you without knowing everything.” Banner says quite awkwardly.
“I’m sure I can do this myself, just tell me everything that’s in the serum.” I say. I don’t exactly feel comfortable letting these people operate on me.
“You might want to let the actual doctor do this Leiton.” Bid Bird says. If I could see, I would be glaring at him right now.
“Just because my actual education ended in the fifth grade, doesn’t make me stupid. I f I weren’t blind, I’d be fixing myself right now.” I say defending myself.
“It’s not that we don’t think you can’t it’s just safer this way.” Banner says. I sigh realizing I can’t win this battle.
“I’m 5’5 and 117 pounds.”
“Off by 17 pounds.” Barton mumbles.
“Well excuse me for trying to get back to a healthy weight after being under fed for years. And it is mostly muscle.” I say, trying to look straight and not attempt to look at Barton. That shut them up. Literally, the next 10 minutes is silent until Iron Buns walks in.
“Alright, so what have we figured out?” I hear.
“Well I’ve just been entering her information and going over the serum.” Banner says.
“You continue doing that, I’ll begin looking over Leiton.” Stark says. I hear him grab something and then walk in front of me. “Okay Leiton, I’m going to flash a light in your eyes to see if it does anything.”
“Okay.” I say as he steps closer. The scent of what I wanna say is Axe body spray, but I’m sure is some expensive cologne, invades my nose as he puts a hand on my forehead to life up my eyelid more. After a couple seconds his hand moves to the other side of my head.
“Do you see anything when the light flashes over?” He asks.
“Nope.” I say, popping the p.
“You said certain drugs don’t affect you; why don’t you start with that?” Spangles suggests. I didn’t think he’d still be here.
“That’s a long list, Grandpa, read off the ingredients to the serum and I’ll tell you what doesn’t affect me.” I say. Banner rattles off different serums and I tell him all that I’m immune to.
“Well the blinding agent seems to be the only thing that fully worked on you; the sheer combination of all the chemicals is what caused you pain.” Banner confirms.
“Then give me the antidote to the blinding agent.” I say simply.
“Jarvis, mind getting that ready for us?” Stark asks.
“Right away, sir.” The British voice answers. After that, the only sound that resonates is the machines in the back mixing the antidote. A couple minutes pass and Barton speaks up.
“What did you mean by under fed for years?” He asks.
“Peter really didn’t tell you?” I asked confused.
“He told us that you were a French slave, yes.” Stark answers.
“Well hate to ruin whatever fantasy you might be having, but let’s just say that slaves don’t exactly have 3-course meals.” I say. I hear the machines shut down and then the British voice say, “The antidote is ready sir.”
“Fantastic.” Stark says. “I’ll inject it in your inner elbow.” Banner says. I hold out my right arm for him and feel a cold cotton ball that I’m assuming is soaked in rubbing alcohol or some kind of disinfectant. I then feel a small, sharp stab as Banner sticks the needle in my arm.
“Now it may take a couple minutes, but that should do it.” Banner says, taking the needle out of my arm. I could play this off and pretend that I still can’t see, but they’d only inject me with more concoctions and I’ve had enough of that in my lifetime. We all wait in silence until I begin to see a light. I blink a couple times until I see figures. I rub my eyes and the figures begin to have colors and details. I blink a few more times until I see 4 faces all staring at me. I look all of them in the eye and then look around the lab until I see Peter on a medical table. His mask is off, and his arm seems to have scabbed over form where I cut him. I push off the table and walk to him.
“Whoa Leiton, let’s take a minute to make sure you’re okay.” Stark says walking over to me. I turn to him and begin saying “I’m fi-” but before I can finish Stark grabs my face and shines a light in my eyes as he did before. “Okay… Everything seems good.” Stark says clicking the flashlight off and stepping back. I’m about to ask how long Peter’s been out, but before I can Stark talks again. “Are you on heroin?” He says pointing to my arms.
“What? No.” I say, but then look at my arms. He’s pointing at all the marks from my injections. It’s not that farfetched of an idea. I mean I did tell Aaron and Emily that when they asked, but they’ve been through their own shit and understand. Most people don’t bring it up.
“Then what are those?” Barton asks, coming up next to Tony and grabbing my arm. He gently runs his thumb over all the marks and I jerk my arm from his grasp.
“They’re- I… it’s just…” I stammer as I try to think of an excuse. Failing I turn away from them and ignore their question. “How long has it been since you got me?” I ask my back to everyone.
“About 25 minutes.” Barton answers. “Why?” Ignoring Barton’s question again, I begin thinking of how I’m going to help peter. I cut him about 10 minutes before we left and by the looks of the incision he has enough poison in him to keep him out for about an hour and a half which means I should apply… exactly 2.9 ounces of the cure. I reach down for my belt. Where’s my belt? Riiiiight. I turn to prepare to ask for it, but am beat by Banner saying, “Your belt and arrows are on Tony’s table, why do you need them?” How did he? “How much did you hear?” I ask before answering his question.
“Your whole thought process.” Stark answers. “Quite interesting actually, how were you able to calculate so quickly?”
“I’ve been doing this a long time. And I need my belt because it has the solution to my poison that I cut Peter with.” I say looking back towards Banner. “I also need a 5 oz. syringe and a 2mm needle.” I say turning back to Peter. I take off Peter’s glove placing it on another table and roll his sleeve up as best I can without irritating the wound. Rogers hands me my belt and I place it next to Peter, opening one of the pockets and grabbing a small glass bottler with a cork top. I hand the belt back to him while Stark comes up with the needle. I pull the cork out and get the correct amount of medicine. I replace the cork and hand Stark the half full bottle. Banner hands me a cotton ball that smells of running alcohol and I soak Peter’s forearm where I’ll inject the needle. I put the used cotton ball on the table and inject the needle into Peter’s arm. I push the syringe so the serum can flow through his veins. As soon as I take the needle out, Peter’s eyes pop open, he gasps, and springs up. He looks around frantically, but I put my hands on his chest and say, “Peter, I need you to calm down. I’m sorry for doing that to you, but I couldn’t fight you.” He takes a deep breath and lays back down.
“Jade, what happened?” He asks as I turn to a table with medical supplies.
“After I cut you, Metal Head and I duked it out and after that, Thor got me with a knock out serum. It didn’t fully work, but it did make me blind. Spangles here carried me like a sack of potatoes and they gave me an antidote for the serum. Now we’re here.” I explain to him while checking his heartbeat with a stethoscope. I look in his eyes with a flash light as Stark did with me and then put all the supplies back. “You seem good.” I say rocking back on the balls of my feet. Peter sits up with his feet handing off the side and I join his side. “I really am sorry I cut you. I just… I couldn’t-”
“Jade I know. You couldn’t fight me and to be honest, I would do the same thing if I was in your position. At least you didn’t hit me upside the head to knock me out.” He jokes. I smile; maybe we can still mend out friendship. He looks at me while I stare at my twiddling thumbs in my lap. “Jade?” He asks.
“Yeah?” I say looking up. But he doesn’t say anything, he wraps his arms around me and I return the gesture. I hold him as close as I can willing myself not to cry in front of the others. I will figure out how to make this work, whatever the cost. I will not lose this boy again.
A/N: Heyo! So this is more of a filler chapter, but I promise the next one is a doosy! Anyway, what do you think of Jade arguing with them throughout this chapter? I tried to show that they really don't know what Jade has been through and don't even have an idea either. What do you think of Jade healing Peter and that whole scene? She's guilty about what she's been doing and what she's put Peter through. What do you think she'll do to make things right?
The picture attached is another one of Jade's tattoos. It's the Thunder Bird in the top right corner. It's on her left shoulder. Now I know what you all are thinking, why? Well it will all be explained later in the story. For now leave your thoughts on what they all mean in the comments.
Okie dokie, I think that's it. Until next time, enjoy, comment and vote. Thanks loves!
