Witchfire
Author: Skylarjonee
Genre: Fantasy
What I liked about this book:
Some of the writing here is very pretty. It's nice to read and has a nice cadence and flow to it. Keris has an interesting backstory, even if we don't get to see any of it.
What I did NOT like about this book:
For the bits of pretty writing this book is so bogged down with purple prose that it's incredibly difficult to read. The story doesn't truly begin until chapter 6, and even then I'm having trouble getting into the motivation for it, or why I should care about any of the characters. I threw in the towel around chapter 10.
There is no reason given for why the witches are doing this hunting ceremony, what it means, or why they're doing it off season other than Keris' sister feels like it. It's blatantly obvious that her and Jurian are going to bone later, and absolutely no buildup at all is given to this. She immediately finds him attractive and interesting for no apparent reason.
The tense shifts around a lot, and there's a lot of infodumping. This just wasn't enjoyable, between the poor writing and the lack of plot motivation and the stock characters with no easily discernible personalities.
I put it down pretty quick.
Overall:
Didn't really enjoy this. It would be good with a lot of heavy editing, like a lot of stuff on my list.
Rating:
4/10 because I think the idea has potential.
