Unseen Depths

Author: perci_snickedy

Genre: Fantasy/Romance

What I liked about this book:

The character does have a very well recognizable voice. The prose has rhythm to it and is easy to read, not too wordy, and mostly laid out well. I did like Penelope's introduction and explanation of having been shipwrecked--it made me laugh.

What I did NOT like about this book:

The pacing here is just WAY too fast. We go from the shipwreck to being kidnapped by a purple-haired alien in like three chapters, and through all this the MC questions none of it. Which is fine right at the start because she's dehydrated and delirious, but once she gets to the sea-peoples' cavern it would make sense for her to work way harder to escape.

Speaking of, can we spend more than five seconds underwater with Lurian and his parents? We just went there then left again immediately, meaning I have no sense of these aliens' culture or why they're underground or why they can't communicate with humans.

There's only six chapters, but it all came off as sorta silly. It would make a good children's or elementary readers' book, but this is not a good novel for any other audience.

Overall:

I didn't hate it but I'm glad it wasn't longer

Rating:

4/10 because it was tolerable.
