The Return of the King

Author: tim_the_brave

Genre: Fantasy

What I liked about this book:

It was amusing even though it wasn't intended to be. Like, giggling-out-loud-at-work amusing. The prose was also clean.

What I did NOT like about this book:

I'm honestly not sure why this person asked me for a review. But they did, so here we go.

This book is a trash fire of epic proportions. The plot makes no sense. It's wildly consistent from page to page, and seems to go in whatever direction the author feels like it should. A lot of things happen that just aren't believable, like his mother picking up a greatsword just before she dies, and Tethran's abusive father leaving because a four year old asked him to.

On top of that, Tethran is a blatant Gary Stu insert who is strong and brave when the plot requires it, and also kind of an asshole. He's the worst combination of fedora-wearing niceguy™ and gary stu fantasy self-insert. All women are either whores or pure, in the case of his obvious love interest, and all other men are lecherous brutes.

Lavender is a sexist caricature. She's 400 years old and comes from a culture where nudity is acceptable but acts like a six year old who has no idea what sex is. It's creepy. Tethran is overly concerned with preserving her 'purity' while she flounces around stripping all her clothes off and showing her tits to a guy so he'll spill information during an interrogation (???)

Honestly, I'm still not convinced this book isn't some kind of godawful parody.

Overall:

Awful. Somehow not the worst I've come across.

Rating:

1/10 on any measure. If this IS in fact a parody, 7/10.
