The Dragon's Scale

Author: Cross-warrior

Genre: Fantasy

What I liked about this book:

The premise here, of a boy getting sucked into a world of dragons because his loved one got taken, is interesting. It's been done before, but it has some good potential. Josh seems like a nice enough guy, though I didn't really see enough out of his eyes to get to know him. This book has the potential to be a fun read.

What I did NOT like about this book:

It bored me to tears. The pace slogs, and the writing is dense and boring. I tried really hard not to skim and wound up doing it anyway. There wasn't enough there to make me care about the characters or what happened to them. Josh got beat up by a bully at some point in chapter one and all I found myself thinking was 'So? Who cares?'

When Mara or whoever appears, there is a ton of infodumping without a good premise behind it. Said good premise would be easy to have since Josh has no idea where he is, but this opportunity is wasted.

But my main issue was that reading this made me want to stop. It was just bland and uninteresting action scene after action scene where there wasn't enough pull to make me actually care about what was happening.

Overall:

Not a fan.

Rating:

3/10 for the interesting premise but I just cannot do the prose.
