The Dare
Author: XxRiah916xX
Genre: Romance
What I liked about this book:
Gay dads. The gay dads are wholesome and adorable. To be honest though the whole family is precious and has a good dynamic.
What I did NOT like about this book:
Everything else is bad.
The whole book is written in confusing, jumbled third person that jumps around point of view and can't stay in a consistent tense. Most scenes are just straight up listed rather than doing any kind of descriptive scene setting. The entire thing kind of gives me a headache. It's also littered with spelling errors in addition to the glaring grammatical ones. There's apparently a sex scene later and I'm really glad I didn't read it because I'm sure it's lolworthy.
I have so many questions here, too. Why wasn't Aurora suspended? Why can she suddenly speak Spanish? Why was her teacher suddenly her uncle? How come her fathers never mentioned a new adoption, isn't that sort of shit required? It's just not well laid out.
That's not even my biggest issue though.
My biggest issue is that Aurora and Ryan's relationship started when she grabbed and kissed him in a room full of people without his consent. Say it with me now:
SEXUAL ASSAULT IS NOT OKAY REGARDLESS OF YOUR GENDER.
Worse, this is played off as a cute moment that only causes them to get in a relationship later. Ryan is a nice dude but has a fake love triangle with one of Aurora's friend that both comes off as trite and is super creepy because friendo is super possessive.
If this were a book about a girl who is pulling away from her loving family because of unfortunate choices, I would have probably read and enjoyed it. But it wasn't.
Overall:
I only kept reading for the dads.
Rating:
The family pieces are like a 5/10. The rest gets a 0/10, it's a jumbled mess and sexual assault IS. NOT. OKAY. It lost a point for that.
