Songs of Outcasts and Wanderers
Author: frankieonye
Genre: Fantasy
What I liked about this book:
The artwork and layout of this book were very well done. The author obviously put a lot of work into outlining and making their piece look nice before they posted it.
The MC is really obviously not straight which is good representation.
What I did NOT like about this book:
The writing of this book is littered with infodumps about the castle and various markets and where the characters are going. It drifts aimlessly from third limited to third omniscient without any idea of where it's going, and that makes the whole thing incredibly dry and boring. The characters themselves are a list of traits, without much actual personality, and the scenery is forgettable.
Kai is whiny and I hate him. He's also kind of a dick. I want to punch him in the face, then throw him in a river. He's insufferable, rude, and snotty.
So far Erez strikes me as a gary stu, and there's really nothing memorable or unique about his personality or view of the world.
Most of the action, along with a good part of the character descriptions, read like the author's watched too much bad anime. I stopped at chapter 14 because at that point I was bored and a plot still hadn't revealed itself, other than Erez whining because Kai--who he met once--took off and Kai wandering around like the blithering idiot he is.
I just couldn't get invested in this, even though I really tried to.
Overall:
This book was super forgettable.
Rating:
5/10. Thanks for trying I guess.
