Dying Dreams

Author: izzahbellah

Genre: Fantasy/Romance

What I liked about this book:

It was readable. Most of it was clear. The prose flowed easily and was quick to get through, and wasn't filled with spelling/grammar errors. I really liked the first chapter, where Ariel jumps off the cliff and hits her head. That could have been a powerful opening for a very good book.

What I did NOT like about this book:

Instead, I got a standard trite YA book with an obvious love interest and stock characters. Ariel is extremely unlikeable. She's an asshole to everyone around her because she's not like other girls™. She's surprised when because of her frosty demeanor, nobody likes her. She's picked on and bullied with no details other than the author obviously thinks it'll make us sympathize with her plight when really she is just as nasty to the other parties.

It's clear from this point that there is something supernatural going on with Ariel but we're at chapter 8 and I still haven't been told what it is so I stopped caring.

Speaking of, I feel like Jenna is just a rewrite of the main character in Mean Girls and has no personality past 'likes to throw smoothies on Ariel'.

Don't get me started on Aiden and Claire. I wrote this comment in the book, but I'm going to give it again:

Imagine you have a brick. Write 'this is the love interest' on the brick. Put the brick in a sock, then beat your reader in the face with it. That's the equivalent of what the author is doing with Aiden. It's uncomfortable, he has no personality traits other than 'is attractive'.

Claire isn't much better.

Oh, and stop switching POVs halfway through a chapter, it's confusing as hell. If you are going to switch POVs don't write the book in first person, either.

Overall:

Trite YA nonsense written by someone that is obviously young and likes Twilight a little too much.

Rating:

3/10, at best.
