Throne of Power: Ascendance
Author: ChrisLordOfTheSea
Genre: Fantasy
What I liked about this book:
The author seems to have a good grasp of worldbuilding, and a good picture of the conflict that he is trying to portray. There is a lot to unpack here, and it seems like it's well thought out. He's probably got an outline somewhere with all the kingdoms and their treaties on it.
What I did NOT like about this book:
This is so dry that it won a second slot in the 'books I wasn't actually able to finish' shelf. I had no idea what was going on in the first chapter. There was a lot of our main character looking around at the architecture, and something about a battle? I don't know. It was so confusingly written I had no idea where the angels came from or what they were fighting about.
The second chapter, with the woman and the shield, is where I stopped. At this point I was so confused with how we were jumping around in time that I didn't feel like I could give a fair review even if I read farther. This book is just incredibly confusing. Each chapter is extremely long, and has no clear path from point A to point B, which makes it extremely confusing to read. It feels like the author read some high fantasy and tried to emulate without ever having studied how to properly structure a story.
I also didn't really appreciate the use of the word 'retarded' to describe someone clapping their hands. It is not period, incredibly offensive, and not even a good description of what was going on.
Overall:
Boring, dry, and offensive to boot. I won't be reading any more.
Rating:
2/10. I had similar problems with this as I did with Ranger of Path. It's confusing and dry, and I won't be reading any more of it.
