The Harvest

Author: sugarbabeniall

Genre: Harry Styles fanfic

What I liked about this book:

I was way more entertained by this book than I really should have been. It's an easy read with an incredibly simplistic plot, and reminds me of some of the less-good anime I have watched. Still, sometimes less-good is still fun, and this truly isn't as bad as I was expecting when I saw 'Harry Styles fanfiction'.

I don't understand why Harry Styles fanfic is even a thing, but you do you. This book is clearly someone's escapism they're writing for themselves, and while I don't get it, and don't think it's worthy of wide publication. I also was legitimately entertained by pieces of it.

What I did NOT like about this book:

The plot didn't really make sense. We have this girl in a village who is getting ready to be 'chosen' by this evil Harry Styles prince. No one WANTS to be chosen by this guy, and yet they all choose their prettiest outfits. If you didn't want to be chosen wouldn't you be in a terrible outfit instead?

That kind of vein really just continued through the rest of the book. It says the rest of the girls disappeared, and yet he takes her to a big ball, socializes her with his Irish friend, and introduces her to his cousin. By the way, does the Irish guy live there? Because I can't really figure it out. I also got the impression by the last chapter that cousin dude is evil, but honestly I can't tell because everyone is so poorly characterized.

The main character is a bland sue type character with no real personality, and honestly, no one else really has any personality either. Harry's main defining characteristics are 'pleasant' and 'likes his pet cat'. Everything is very telly, including long passages informing us that the main character had a conversation or went somewhere, but not showing us she did. The point of view jumps around so much I can't keep straight whose head I'm in.

Basically, the thing's kind of a technical mess.

Overall:

Meh. I probably wouldn't read this on my own, fanfic about real people is fucking weird, and it's not my thing. But there's nothing so wrong with this that I feel the need to really drag it. I didn't struggle reading it and found myself a little more invested in the story than I really wanted to be? I dunno, I find the oddest things entertaining.

Rating:

5/10 I guess. I never would have picked this up on my own, and it's really not my favorite, but I didn't hate it.
