The Catalyst Oath
Author: may_flower123
Genre: Fantasy
What I liked about this book:
Interesting premise. The magic system with the sirens was an interesting concept.
What I did NOT like about this book:
Nothing in this book has any reason for happening. I have no idea why Onyx left the training grounds, other than to find her parents, but the audience was never told this so it felt completely fucking random. Same for when the dragons came. And when Alesandra and her mother got attacked. And when--I quote--there was a 'humongous fire explosion'.
The whole book reads like a 50+ chapter long nonsequitor.
Which brings us to the next problem: the prose in this book is amusingly awful. Hues for eyes, orbs for eyes, dialogue that makes no sense and is infodumpy. Descriptions of scenery that are out of place. Peoples' appearances gone into in minute detail for what is literally no reason.
The only character that was even halfway likeable was Alesandra, and she was a sue. The rest of them read like bad RP characters, especially Venix who falls in love with Lucien all of the sudden for no reason at all. Onyx talks a lot about how 'monsters aren't bad', then does shit like killing two travelers after lying to them for no good reason.
This book lacks any direction or structure, sounds like something a twelve year old wrote, and desperately needs to be rewritten.
I see the author is fifteen so she shouldn't take this feedback too terribly harshly. I wrote very similar things when I was fifteen, and so did some fantastic author friends I know. But as is, it's not a good book, and I can't grade it as if it is one.
Overall:
Amusingly bad.
Rating:
3/10. I giggled but it wasn't a good book.
