Soul Like Feathers

What I liked about this book:
I like Sorante. He's funny and very clever. He's probably the most amusing part of the whole book, which would have been better if he was the main character instead of the twins.
What I did NOT like about this book:
This book won a spot on my coveted 'books I didn't finish because I hated them so much' shelf. I hated this book. From the opening, I was uninterested...the twins board a train then get sucked off to some magical kingdom with absolutely no explanation whatsoever. Then they just *accept* that the queen is their mother with some magical DNA test and quickly forget about their old lives or families, only stopping to think about them on occasions where it is convenient to the plot.
Speaking of which, there really isn't one. You spend the next five chapters at dinner and magic classes that aren't well-explained at all, and then randomly flash forward six months to a dance with a bunch of magical creatures that were never actually mentioned before that point. Val then gets kidnapped...I think? The entire thing is a confused mess.
Speaking of Val and Brett, neither has any personality past 'yells a lot' and 'quiet'. I don't care about them. The book is tagged 'badass girls', but Val just shouts a lot. Otherwise she's incredibly boring.
The only character I liked was Sorante, who had a hint of an actual personality, though he wasn't well-developed enough either.
The writing is paced very poorly, and the tense it is in switches all over the place. The piece badly needs proofreading, and was difficult to get through.
I threw in the towel around chapter eight. I'd been tortured enough.
Overall:
Dislike.
Rating:
2/10 purely because it isn't the worst thing I've come across, but that's not saying much.
