What I liked about this book:

It's about horse racing, which is something near and dear to my heart. Most of the track descriptions are accurate, which is something that would have bugged me a lot if they weren't. Honestly I had really high hopes for this book because of the content.

What I did NOT like about this book:

I read the second draft of this on the author's request, and it just didn't meet my expectations. The prose is boring and draggy, there are long periods of infodumping backstory without any context, and the book opens on the character having a dream, then hitting the button on her alarm clock. I was done after chapter one, but read to chapter five anyway.

Claire has no personality, and the relationship between her and Ben is stale. I can't even tell if she likes him or not apart from her saying outright that she does. If this is supposed to be a romance, there needs to be much more spark.

I had really high hopes for this because it's about one of my favorite things, but it just isn't interesting or engaging for me.

Overall:

This is disappointing, and I would not read the rest.

Rating:

2/10. It lost stars because a book about racehorses is easymode with me, and it failed to get me engaged at all.
