Overshot
Author: riprish
Genre: Sci fi
What I liked about this book:
Overshot is a very easy read with a very clear plot so far, for the eight chapters I have been given. The species that are outlined in the book leave me hungry to know more about the universe that has been shown. Everything is alien, but not so alien that it feels weird or unsettling, and the dominant race being put forth as an evolved form of human being helps to cement that.
I loved Tony. He's adorable, and I just want to give him a hug. I have a picture of a little nuclear robot family with a little robot baby babbling and toddling around, and it's cute. He's fairly blunt and no-nonsense, as one would expect a robot to be, and he's stuffed full of personality.
What I did NOT like about this book:
The first chapter of this desperately needs a rewrite. It's paced funny, and it's just not as interesting as the remaining seven. I understand that Ty is in Kuwait, and she's in trouble, but it's all done in the blink of an eye and I am left feeling a little confused. It went away quickly, but I'd like to see a more effective hook here, and the way it's currently set up is likely to turn some readers off.
There are also a huge number of plot holes. How does Ty know the thing on her wrist is the missing weapon if all she ever saw of it was glowing armor? A wristband is not glowing armor. How did Ty evolve into a stronger being with no rhyme or reason, and why were the Uma so surprised by this? And how exactly are they unable to find Earth if they found her floating in a capsule? It must be nearby!
A couple of these could be fixed with later plot developments, but the thing with the wristband armor and the bit where Ty suddenly evolves to be as strong as the aliens feel pretty unfixable to me without changing some of the existing text. The second one honestly just annoyed me, and felt like a way to make Ty cooler in this strange place.
Some of the dialogue feels infodumpy too, but that's a nitpick and could easily be fixed with some line edits.
Overall:
This is really good, how does it only have 50 reads? I wish it had fewer plot holes and that the opening chapters made a little more sense. I added it to my library. It's solidly sci-fi, but an easy read, which there's a sore lack of on Wattpad. It had a very Mass Effect feel to me, and I love Mass Effect.
Rating:
7/10, I took a point off for the plot hole that annoyed me, could be 8/10 or even 9/10 if that was taken out. I'm also upset because there's only eight chapters. This is really entertaining, go read it.
