Onyx City Gods

Author: mrsanguine

Genre: Noir/thriller

What I liked about this book:

This book is Noir detective meets Kill Bill, and I'm in love with the setting. It's comic-book cheesy, but that's not a problem for me at all. It's dark and gritty, a little ridiculous, and the bad guys are so overpowered it's laughable, and it's awesome. This book would be perfectly at home in a Tarantino script somewhere.

Darius is a likeable character, though he is dark and brooding, and he most certainly isn't a good guy. This retired necromancer is just trying to get his way through life with the least amount of bloodshed, and I can respect that...even when there's still a bunch of bloodshed.

What I did NOT like about this book:

The prologue needs to go. It does nothing for me, and I can't tell whose point of view it's supposed to be in. It's silly in a bad way, and it adds nothing that isn't expounded upon later when Kraken starts talking about the guy that used to run the city. I can get enough background from that, and as-is it's probably turning readers off.

The pace seems to drag in places. There are long stretches of talking interspersed with action scenes, and although the author is fantastic at description, some of it needs to be pepped up.

I can see a lot of readers just plain not liking this. As I said, it's very Tarantino-esque, very over-the-top with the bloodshed and sex and violence. I think it works here. I don't think Wattpad is the right audience for it, though.

The author is playing with racial tension as well which is something he's going to need to be EXTREMELY careful with to avoid stereotypes. As the book currently stands at six chapters, I can't give much further insight into this.

Overall:

I liked this. It was fun. The comic book violence was a little bit ridiculous and over-the-top, but it absolutely works in context. I kind of wish it was a graphic novel, though.

Rating:

7/10, I only read six chapters because there aren't any more, but I could see myself giving it a higher rating if it was complete and I continued to like it.
