Life in Bad Luck
Author: crazyashlove
Genre: Teen Fiction
What I liked about this book:
The story that came in around chapter 18, about a girl who had a head injury and does not remember her boyfriend, could have been fascinating. It would have been fun to explore this from chapter 1, because it's a good idea even though it's been done dozens of times.
What I did NOT like about this book:
The author lacks a basic grasp of spelling and grammar. The dialogue is stilted and those sentences that aren't grammatically incorrect all start with 'I'. The entirety of the first chapter is a girl putting on clothes, going to school, going to work, etc, and it's all boring as hell.
The neighbors that move in next door are doctors, and don't take her to the hospital even when she has a head injury and is unconscious for two days. They also don't, as mandated reporters, tell anyone this seventeen year old girl was nearly killed by her sister.
She immediately trusts Drake to the point where holding her face removes any pain she would have had from having a major stab wound cleaned out. Which she somehow managed to get from a hockey stick, by the way, despite it being a blunt instrument.
I don't think the author knows how a snowstorm works. If it hit the park it would have hit their house, too. Also frozen blood just kills a person, it doesn't make them magically in a coma for a month.
Besides which, if someone doesn't make it out of their coma in a few days, they're incredibly unlikely to ever regain consciousness. Somehow the doctor magically knows she will have lost her memory, too, even after she wakes up.
Drake was going to propose to his seventeen year old girlfriend after Prom. This is mentioned once and then never again, with no context on how awful an idea this is.
It turns out Belinda is randomly adopted. This is first told to us in like, chapter 15. There was no foreshadowing.
She's walking again a few days after awakening without any physical therapy to speak of, at full strength, well enough to run away from her father.
No one has any personality. Drake is just a bland love interest. Ella being randomly suddenly in love with him made no sense as a plot device.
Overall this book was nonsensical and painful to read. The snowstorm thing made me rofl and it wasn't supposed to.
Overall:
This hurt to go through. Not sure why all my books lately have been so...not good. Hopefully I'll get to review a good one soon.
Rating:
2/10 at best.
