Learning to Survive

Author: tashtypes

Genre: Teenfic

What I liked about this book:

The emotions in this book are real and poignant. I could see a real survivor of a traumatic event feeling the way Tyler does. I found myself becoming angry that her bandmates were dead while she stood by their graves. I also found myself becoming angry at the media in the last chapter. They were visceral reactions I didn't realize I was having until after I'd had them, and that's hard to pull off.

Maddy and Tyler's relationship also seems very real. I love how they support each other, and I also sense that Maddy has not really had a chance to express her grief over the friends she also lost, which is very powerful. It's very well done.

What I did NOT like about this book:

It took a long time for stuff to happen, and by chapter six things felt very dreary for me. Tyler is getting back into this new life, signing contracts, and what have you, but there's just this sense of greyness that slicks over it all. It's appropriate for the setting and theme--and very realistic for someone suffering from depression--but also left me feeling a little bored. I'd like some mix-up of emotional impact to make those sad moments feel even more poignant.

There were quite a few annoying typographical errors which could probably be weeded out with a good proofreader, and big words (like vexacious) that the text just didn't need. Those are nitpicks.

Overall:

A very well done book I wouldn't mind continuing to read. Very solid effort, made me have feelings, and not much to complain about. I enjoyed this book.

Rating:

7/10. I'd like to see the typos go and to lighten up the sadness. I did enjoy it, though.
