Latent
Author: NikkiHulland
Genre: Werewolf
What I liked about this book:
This book was a quick and entertaining read, with prose that flowed well and good descriptions. The main character has a lot of personality, and a voice I find identifiable. She's scared, stuck in a situation she doesn't really want, and isn't in control of her own destiny. That's frustrating, and I think something a lot of people could relate to.
I did enjoy this book. I need people to stop giving me entertaining werewolf books because pretty soon I'm going to have to stop shitting on the genre.
What I did NOT like about this book:
The thing with Marcus being her father is super confusing. Can she please call him one or the other? I wasn't sure until the last chapter that he even really was and it took me way too much energy to puzzle out. Just have her call him Father, or Marcus but make it clear that he is. Going back between one and the other is way too much work for the reader.
When she ran away, if she's been gone for a goddamn year, why didn't she get on an airplane/go to a human city/do literally anything other than running to the next pack over? That doesn't make any sense to me. I get that they turned her around but she could have at any point gone literally anywhere that wasn't near her old home. Also, she would have recognized it, I would think, unless she's a lot stupider than she reads as.
There's a fairly hamfisted attempt at a romance between Hayleigh and Aiden that I can smell already and we're on chapter five. Which is sort of a problem because Aiden has been pretty controlling toward her so far.
That makes sense because she is currently his captive for some VERY good and non-contrived reasons, but it's going to need to be sorted out if I'm ever going to do anything with this book other than roll my eyes at it. She needs to be free before there's any romantic intentions or this book will become a problem.
I'd like some more exploration of Hayleigh's past and why she is latent, but we have plenty of time for that since the book is only five chapters long.
Overall:
I did like this actually.
Rating:
6/10. It needs more content before I can give it a better rating.
