Captive (Trapped Trilogy One)

Author:

Genre: Fantasy

What I liked about this book:

There is a very compelling story under here, regarding a forbidden romance and a terrible prince who kidnaps a princess. That story in and of itself is very interesting, especially if it is taken out of Astoria's point of view.

Some of the prose is pretty, especially when Arson is talking about all the things he likes about Astoria.

What I did NOT like about this book:

The text was not clean, to the point where it was nearly unreadable. It was chunked together with no effort put towards spelling/grammar or formatting dialogue so we know who is talking and when. It's a confusing jumble that took a very very long time to read.

The point of view shifts around so often I had trouble keeping the storyline straight. If you're gonna do that, fine, but generally it needs to be for a full chapter. We also lose the POV frequently midway through the text and wind up in someone else's, which is a problem.

Astoria is a weak and boring character, and the most important part about her is a man. I hate this. Then, Bruce attempts to rape her, only for the author to try to set him up as a sympathetic character later. This doesn't work for me, and in fact, it's borderline offensive. If you set Bruce up as a rapist, I am never going to like him, no matter what cool awesome stuff he may do later.

There was a ton of describing peoples' personalities and what they were wearing. SHOW ME. Show me that Astoria is brave and loyal and fierce, don't tell me. SHOW ME that Arson is commanding and awesome. There was literally a whole chapter that was just descriptions of peoples' personalities.

Overall:

I did not enjoy this book.

Rating:

1/10 because of lack of effort formatting. 3/10 otherwise.
