Brittle
Author: luckyplum
Genre: Fantasy
What I liked about this book:
Corbin. He's hysterical, young, and awkward, and that's relatable. He also contrasts with his twin brother Griffin, who is cocky and full of himself. Reading from their point of view is really fun and interesting, and this is one of those books that just doesn't take very long to read because of how easy it is.
The author has a very smooth way of structuring sentences, and the book feels short, but not in a way that is off-putting, probably because each chapter is short. The world she's built is extremely enticing. We have the personification of four seasons, and two human boys caught in the middle. The fact that one of them has an irreparably shattered ankle adds an interesting element to what would have otherwise been a generic two-brothers type story, and I really, really enjoyed that.
What I did NOT like about this book:
Certain things aren't expounded upon enough for me. I would like to see more between Griffin and Veyda. It kind of works the way it is because she is so obviously using him (even if it is unwitting), but I would like more chapters from his point of view and to see more tone-setting between them, since this is a big part of the plot.
The point of view also switches around a lot. The Summer King is an interesting character, and I did not find this switch confusing, but if the author intends to publish, the entire book probably needs to be from third person. The fact that Corbin is the ONLY character told in first person actually makes this extremely workable, mostly because Corbin has a very relatable and strong voice.
The plot might be a little predictable if my guesses are accurate, since the book isn't finished yet. I predict that Corbin is actually the 'strong' twin despite his broken leg. This isn't necessarily a bad thing in teenfic, but I noticed it.
Overall:
This book could definitely strongly benefit from a second draft if the author intends to publish, but I very thoroughly am enjoying it. I like the characters, the setting is interesting, and it's the kind of quick, engrossing read I usually like. I would really like to see some more building upon certain parts of the plot, such as Griffin and Veyda's relationship and the pranks that Wray plays on Corbin. But this is solid entertainment, and I like it enough to recommend.
Rating:
8/10. I really like this. It needs a rewrite if the author intends on publishing it for realsies.
