Before Noon

Author: squirrelg

Genre: Science fiction

What I liked about this book:

The writing itself actually wasn't terrible. It flowed pretty well, and the first three chapters or so made things really interesting. There was a lot of well played out dynamics between different family members, and between the main character and Evan.

What I did NOT like about this book:

The premise here is just so silly I can't stand it.

The Earth is heating up. Fine. Global warming is a thing. But then there's a wall of fire. And then we find out the reason there's a wall of fire is because someone flew a spaceship near the sun that had a fuel leak...and also it's so hot the oceans are literally boiling. This raises more than a few questions, like:

1. How the hell did they get the spaceship close enough to have a fuel leak without literally toasting to death?

2. How is everyone not already dead if water is boiling into steam? Water boils at 212 degrees at sea level which is like way the fuck high enough a temperature to burn you

3. How is everyone not starved to death? Food doesn't grow when it's that hot.

4. The author realizes the size of a spaceship in comparison to the sun, yes? And that the sun is made of hydrogen?

The implausibility of this crisis completely turned me off this book. In addition, after chapter 6 or so it was just the same thing happening over and over and the story really started to drag. I quit around chapter 10.

Overall:

The premise sounds like it came out of Axe Cop. No thanks.

Rating:

2/10. Need to come up with a different reason why everyone is dying, and then this book might be okay.
