Part 3
Somewhere passed Midnight I wake up. I'm not used to such long quantities of safe sleeping time. Especially in such a warm and comfortable bed. I toss and turn, trying to get back to sleep, but something is bugging me.
I sit up in bed when it hits me. I forgot to say a prayer before I went to sleep. I immediately feel guilty. I remember that I passed a church when we walked through the little town square. It was abandoned and in shambles, but never the less a house of God.
It doesn't matter where you pray, what matters is that you do.
After pulling my cloak over the thin night dress I wore, I willed myself to teleport to just outside its entrance. It was a Baptist church, not Roman Catholic like my own faith. But as still was a house of my Lord, it would suit my purposes just fine.
The door is wide open, I see a figure crouched at the base of the statute of Jesus Christ, a candle lit at his feet. This person was on there knees, deep in prayer. Whispering in a language I couldn't understand.
"Im Namen des Vaters und des Sohnes und des Heiligen Geistes. Amen." The figure finished loudly. In the name of the Father, The Son, And the Holy Spirit. That was what he'd just said, in German no less. It was the one who didn't really say much, Kurt, The German with the mischievous smile. He was the newest recruit, besides hopefully, me.
Silently as not to disturb him, I step inside, bending to one knee and performing the ceremonial cross upon myself after crossing the threshold. His senses keen, his head lifted as I rose, he didn't turn around, startled he simply disappeared in a puff of blue smoke.
Never the matter, I thought to myself walking forward and lighting another candle using the flame of the one he still left burning.
I knelt, Removing my cross shaped silver amulet from around my neck and clutching it between my hands like a rosary, bowing my head in prayer. Suddenly I felt a pair of eyes bearing down on me from above. The other mutant was in the rafters, watching me with great suspicion. I didn't stop, I just kept going, others watching me at prayer never bothered me before.
"The Lord Is my Shepard. I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures. He leadeth me beside the still waters. He restores my soul. He leadeth me in the path of righteousness for his namesake. Yes, Though I walk in the valley of the shadow of death I will fear no evil. For thou art with me. Thou Rod and thou staff, they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies. My cup runneth over." I prayed aloud "Now you know I can't finish the rest of that. My Lord, I know in my case, a lifetime of goodness and mercy is a little to much to ask... All I've ever asked for is that you keep me alive and able to fight, and so far I've blessed with your grace in that matter. Thank you Lord for allowing me to find these X-Men, and for allowing me this temporary safe haven. I pray you give us all strength and courage for our battles ahead. In the name of... Well you, your son and the holy spirit." I finished with a slight smile.
I am occasionally tempted to say something else, but "Holy Spirit" sounds way better then "Ghost who knocked up your baby mama."
I opened my eyes, and stood up. Adjusting my necklace back around my neck, I turned and looked upwards at the outline of the figure expertly clinging to the rafters. All I could clearly make out was a pair of golden eyes staring down back at me.
"Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us." I called up to him, quoting the Lord's prayer.
