Chapter 35: Satisfaction

By the fifth period, the tables in the cafeteria were all put away. I took a quick peek inside before heading outside. Dj equipment was already set up, balloons slowly bounced on and off the ceiling, a few kids that had volunteered were putting up decorations, and teachers placed snacks and beverages on the table. I smiled. I had never been to a school dance before. I was very excited about it, but nervous at the same time.

I started to go back outside with the rest of the kids, when I was stopped by someone. Someone with curly and messy wild hair. "Well, hello there," Devin said and gave me a little nudge. "Friend," he winked.

I took a deep breath and let it out, along with his name. "Devin, hey."

"Are you heading to the library?" He straightened his glasses on his nose. "I heard a new series of Goosebumps came in today!"

I shook my head. "Actually, I'm going to the playground."

His eyebrows went up. "Okay! I shall assist you," he said. So there we were, strutting down the hallway getting awkward glances from kids. I felt my cheeks go red as people laughed when we would walk by. When we finally got outside, the girls and Ryan was in front of the playground waiting for me.

"Hey," Liz said throwing her arm around me. She looked at Devin, then back at me. "What's going on here?"

Everyone turns to me, even Devin. "Well, don't you want to make the proper introduction?" Devin said.

I smiled and squinted at him. "Sure. Guys this is Devin." He waved as I talked. "Devin," I pointed to the others. "This is Liz, Mariel, Desiree, and Ryan."

"Wow," Devin responds. The way he looked at my friends was weird. He gazed at them as if he was examining their bodies for a science project. Liz took a step back when Devin got too close.

Ryan shifted. "Okay," he faced me. "Did you see the cafeteria? It's going to be fun."

"The dance!" Devin shouted and popped up in the middle of us. "I myself am a good dancer." He moved away and did some dramatic gestures with his hands, making it wiggle like a worm. Afterward, he moved his hands and legs like he was a robot."

"Hey kid," Liz says squinting at him. "You're embarrassing us. Go play with some robots or whatever. Or save it for the dance."

I look at Liz, angry at her remark. I'm about to tell her that she didn't have to say it like that when Devin stopped dancing and began to walk away. He looked over at me and waved. "I'll be in the library if you need me! Books, books, books." He gave me a thumbs up and I awkwardly put mine up too.

"What a freak." Liz chuckled.

"Don't be so mean," Desiree replied back. "Something's probably wrong with him."

Ryan laughed. "Those moves were horrible."

I take a step back from them. I wanted to tell them all to shut up, but I didn't want to have another breakdown. "He's not bad."

"Did you see those moves," Liz laughed.

I shook my head. "I mean, he's not a bad person! He's sweet. Maybe a little weird, but he's a good person." I gave Liz a serious look. "Please don't be mean to him again. He's my friend.

Mariel clapped and smiled at me. "What a role-model you are, Violet," she joked.

I laughed. "You guys are silly. We'll see who's laughing when we get to the dance floor tonight."

Ryan high fived me. "That's the spirit! We're going to show you all how to really dance."

Desiree smirked. "I can't wait to see that."

***

I didn't get too fancy for the school dance. I figured a pair of jeans with a regular shirt and jacket would do. Liz wore the same. Mariel rocked some gothic look that reminded me of Lynda Deetz from the movie Beetle Juice. Desiree wore a red silky dress that was appropriate enough for school. Ryan decided to dress like some bad boy cool dude from the eighties. He even had his hair slicked back. Even though the dance didn't have a theme, a lot of people came dressed up.

"This looks really cool," I said looking around. The floor was being abused by the hands and feet of many dancers. The music wasn't too loud, in fact, it was perfect. The Dj was a guy who seemed to be in his mid-forties. He played a lot of old electronic songs, but a few good rock and hip-hop songs too. We stood in our little corner by the wall. No one broke a move yet.

"So, who's going to get dirty on the dance floor first?" Ryan asked.

Mariel shrugged. "I am waiting for my date."

"Date?!" All of us shouted. I could never imagine Mariel wanting to kiss someone, or date them in that matter.

Mariel laughed. "What? I can't have a date."

Liz walked in front of her. "What date!"

"Clarrisa Lewison," Mariel says.

"But," Ryan muttered. "She's in the 11th grade."

"Relax guys, we're not dating, but she's my date. We're just going to have fun." Mariel smiled. "And speaking of the devil."

A girl walked into our small circle. She stood right in front of me and smiled. "Hi, I'm Clarissa."

Clarrisa looked like she's in the 11th grade. She definitely dressed like one. She was wearing a tight black dress that exposed a little bit of cleavage. Ryan kept staring at her. She was very beautiful, but I wanted to snap my fingers in front of Ryan's face.

"Now we can dance," Mariel said, grabbing Clarissa's hand.

Liz, Desiree, Ryan, and I followed them into the middle of the dance floor and started dancing. Desiree had some nice moves, but Liz. She danced like a drunk chicken. I had better rhythm than that. We were dancing along to a song called, Sell Me Out by some rock band. A lot of people, especially guys were headbanging and stomping their feet against the ground. I laughed so hard when Ryan took my hand and did the same as the guys. Every time I tried to do the headbang move, I started laughing. "This isn't my kind of dance," I chuckled.

Just then, a new song came on. It was some kind of electronic song. It was called, Satisfaction and as soon as it came on, I saw a familiar face strut onto the dance floor. He started doing these insane robot moves, better than anything I've ever seen. I would never imagine that Devin was THAT good. He ended up doing the worm on the ground and that's when the crowd went insane. Kids were all hyped up around him yelling, "Go, Devin! Go, Devin." I even started yelling it.

When the song was over everyone clapped for Devin. I was about to talk to him when a bunch of other girls poured around him, asking if he wanted to dance with them. Devin accepted their request, but before he leaves, he gives me a thumbs up. I shook my head, smiling and gave him a thumbs up.

Another song came on, easing the crowd. It's a song to dance to with someone. Everyone links up with their partner and if they don't have a partner, they just run over to the food section. Ryan took my hand, but he was also frowning.

"What's wrong?" I asked.

"Don't you remember this song?"

I listened. Sure enough, it was the song that played when I first met Ryan. "This is the same song-"

"Yeah," he said. "I paid the Dj to play it for me," he laughed.

I laughed with him. "Why would you do that?"

He put one hand on my waist and held my other hand. "I think we both deserve to have this moment again."

I smiled when he said that. It almost made me tear up a bit. I was having that moment again, but let me tell you. It felt 100 times better. Somewhere behind me, I heard Desiree saying, "I ship it."

*Don't forget to point out any mistakes I might have missed:)*

Look how cute this is
