Dru, from CLN, had the honor of interviewing an amazing author, thereshewrote. She is the author of several books on Wattpad including The Heartbreak Clause, The Art of Freedom, The Demons of Grimm and Diner Days.

Hi, I'm Dru, an interviewer from Crazy Late Nighters Community. What pen name or name do you do by? What pronoun would you like to go by?

Nice to meet you! My pen name is Sunshine, and my pronouns are she/her.

Alright! Sunshine, what inspired you to join Wattpad? Was it for reading or writing or both?

Both – I used to love reading fanfiction when I was younger, and I have an older sister who loved to write, so I discovered Wattpad through her.

Wow, that's cool! Who were the authors that you admired? Could you name a few?

I think the biggest author to inspire me was Karen Harrington, who wrote a YA book called "Sure Signs of Crazy". I remember reading it when I was young, and understanding how the characters felt, and relating to them on a deep level.

Hm, understanding and relating to characters are very important traits for readers like us... I read 3 chapters of 'The Heartbreak Clause', it's quite interesting, I must say. What and where did you get your idea for The Heartbreak Clause?

Oh man... ironically, The Heartbreak Clause (and my return to Wattpad) came from an ended relationship of mine. The characters were based off of my ex and me, and our situation as a couple at the time. It really left me wondering what could've been, and I poured those feelings into the first couple of chapters of the story.

Experience really helps bring out stories. Are Eve, Emerick or any of the characters based on people you know?

Haha, yes! I see a lot of myself in Eve (although she's a bit more exaggerated), and I think I did that subconsciously while writing her. She's reckless, impulsive, and simply confused with her place in the world. Emerick, on the other hand, is very much like my ex; responsible, driven, and ambitious.

I guess the people around us help us write by just being in our lives. How did you come up with Eve's rude, hurtful lines?

I will admit, some of those things I have said myself. Especially when Eve is talking with Stein, who happens to be based off of an old teacher of mine, I recall saying some of the things she said; "I don't like you", or "you annoy me". That teacher and I didn't get along at first, funny enough, but now we're actually close!

Interesting, I guess when you give two haters time, they'll eventually be close. Do you have favorite characters in your book?

Oh definitely. I do favor Eve because she's a lot like me, but I love Babs and Stein as well. Though, one of the most interesting characters in the book is Lucy, Eve's older sister, and I loved her so much that I gave her a spin-off.

A spin-off? Then I need to read that, haha. Readers can be inspired by a single picture or book. How would fanart or fanfiction of your book make you feel?

Knowing someone loved my work enough to make art based off of it makes me happy. I've already had covers made for me voluntarily, and my heart was absolutely filled when I found out!

That must have been fun! Writer's block is very common for writers. How do you deal with it?

I'm actually in the middle of a writer's block right now, so I try to take time to do other self-care things, as well as write whatever comes to my mind. That way I'm not forcing myself to write anything in a specific category/way, and it helps get me back on track again.

Hm, maybe I should try that technique myself, thanks. Do you have a favorite line/s in your book? What are they?

Yes! There're some lines that I can write out of context, and I can build a whole story out of them. With 'The Heartbreak Clause', I can't remember it from the top of my head, but my favorite lines were when Emerick and Eve got into a huge fight at prom with someone else in the room, and the narration goes something like, "One was hurt, the other drunk, and the third, a mix of both."

"One was hurt, the other drunk, and the third, a mix of both",that's good, hahaha. What is your go-to quote?

My go-to quote is from Charles Bukowski, a very controversial writer but one I adore nonetheless. I have a sticker on my laptop with it: "I want so much that is not here, and I do not know where to go."

Hm, I like that quote...

This is the end of the interview. Thank you for answering and taking time to do this. Is there anything you would like to say to your fans or friends?

Thank you for your time 😄 hm.... I'd like to say thanks for all your support, and I always appreciate their love.
