Xérès Éveillé, from CLN, had the pleasure of interviewing the talented author, anonymousjesusfreak. She is the author of several books on Wattpad including Not By Sight, Keeping The Faith and They Elysian.
Hello anonymousjesusfreak how are you doing today? I'm Xérès Éveillé, an interviewer from the Crazy Late Nighters Community. One of your wonderful readers, Butterflywriter13 nominated you for an interview! I hope you're as excited about this as we are! I hope you're willing to give me some of your time! Let me know if you're okay with this and when you're free if you are!
Hi there! I'm doing pretty good and I'd love to!
I love your enthusiasm! Before we start, what would you like me to call you and what are your pronouns?
Feminine pronouns, and you can call me Gina.
Hello Gina! So, this is your first interview (or at least, on Wattpad) correct? How do you feel about it, especially since you're a nominated interviewee?
This is my first interview, and it feels little weird and exciting to be honest. I just have never done anything like this before so this is very new to me.
I see. Well, don't worry, this is going to go great! Can you give me some backstory about yourself Gina?
I'm a Hoosier (someone from Indiana) and a teen writer. I'm also a proud Latina and a Jesus freak (as you can see on my username). Nothing too exciting though!
Well, that may sound normal but I'm sure there's something unusual somewhere! What, in your opinion, are the perfect three words to sum up your personality?
Probably creative. Shy. Witty.
Interesting combination! Anyways, when did you first began writing and why?
I began writing about a year ago. I just really love to put words together to make up scenarios, give backstories about characters I make up in my head. I just absolutely love it
I can relate there, writing's a beautiful world! What was the inspiration for your stories in general?
My first book was actually inspired by a dream that I had. I truly didn't think it would get as far as it is now, which is another reason why it logged me a thrill to be doing this!
A dream? Sounds a bit like the beginning of Stephenie Meyer's writing career! Do tell me about it!
Well... I was on top of a building and I had a sword in my hand. There was a really nasty looking monster in front of me, the buildings around me were on fire, and I remember jumping off the building and stabbing this monster right in the chest. That's when I woke up. Pretty brutal, huh?
Sounds very heroic of you actually!
Oh, heh thank you. I think I ate too many hot Cheetos before bed that night
Well, it looks like it was, in a sense, a good decision! How long did it take for you to create a rough outline for the story?
I think a day or two for the very beginning. I just wrote it out as I went.
You're a pantser then? So am I! How did you come up with a suitable title for your storyline?
I thought about how my characters had to go through so much, that they needed to depend on their faith in God. There's a verse in the Bible that says, and I'm paraphrasing here, "Walk by Faith, and not by sight." Based off this I decided to name the first book Not By Sight, and the sequel would be Keeping the Faith.
I must say that is quite an intricate way of naming your book and so intriguing! What are the main themes you incorporated into your stories?
Dystopia, Action, Adventure, and a dash of Romance.
I really do love dystopian books, especially ones with storylines like the Hunger Games! Are your characters based on any real-life people or your own attributes?
Yes, all of them are actually! Except one of them (a main character) and her family isn't. Some of their names are actually the in real life people's first and middle names combined!
Oh, they must feel so flattered! Would you like to let us know whom?
Sure! A few boys and girls from my youth group, and a redheaded boy (the character's family is based on some close friends of mine) I met at a conference a few years ago. And one of them is based off of Tony Stark!
Tony Stark's my favorite Marvel character! But let's not get into that, it'll be a never–ending conversation! What's your update schedule like?
Well, I have been updating every day for the past two days, but I usually update at least every two weeks or so.
Ah, I see Well, does your family know about your writing?
Yes they do. They're very supportive about it as well!
That's good to hear! And how about your friends?
Well, they didn't really care much about it.
Then, it's more towards indifference than anything, right? Oh well, at least you have your readers and family to support you! What do you do when you have writer's block?
Yeah, that's it. Usually I'll just listen to some NF and just start writing some ideas down in a notebook I have. Then after I'll go through them and combine them with some scenarios I make up that will fit well with the storyline.
That's a pleasant way! I have a few specific questions for you from the nominee.
Okay, shoot!
Here's one, and this made me laugh! Who is your favorite out of Gad, Kedah and Julius?
Oh boy! That's a tough one.... I would have to say Gad for sure. I'm planning to kind of build his character up more in future books. Give some insight about how he acts and reacts to things
I wonder how she/he will feel hearing this! Her second and last question is why did you decide to write a dystopian romance?
Um, it just... happened? I wouldn't necessarily call it a romance novel, but... I thought it would go good with my storyline. Give it that finishing touch
True, true! I mean, romance is everywhere, so why not add a little, right?
Exactly!
Did you conduct any research for your stories? Since it's dystopian and set in the future, how did you plan out the timeline and such?
I actually did have to do a lot of medical research lol it's not really set in a specific year in the future, but I did add a few things here and there....like holograms instead of computers, some special suits for the main characters that I made up, and one of my main characters has prosthetic limbs that have dimensions of actual limbs and work the same way. I didn't do any research on those things though. Just medical research and it was so tiring!
I can understand, but it eventually pays off! Would you say you have a specific writing style? How would you describe it?
I like to give my readers the unexpected and keep them at the edge of their seats. Lots of angst, and a few plot twists here and there to shake the readers up.
Speaking of readers, what was the most surprising reaction you've received about your writing?
Someone actually fangirling hard in the comments section and sending me PMs about when I'm going to update next.
You must have felt so awkward and happy! Well, when you began to write, what was the most incredible thing you learned?
That I feel like my books are boring and predictable (which I have a HUGE insecurity about) because one: I was the person who wrote it and two: I have had to read it through like a dozen times. I realize that other people who read my books don't experience the same problem.
As they say, we are our own worst critic! Any thoughts about getting your story published?
I would love to have that done if it gets bigger! But it's not one of my primary things to get done in life.
Why not? Is writing simply a hobby?
Yes unfortunately. I would love to do it full time when I'm older but even as a teenager, I have a lot more responsibilities. Especially since I'm getting older... I will sadly have to take a break from Wattpad soon for a long time.
That's sad, would you care to divulge the reasons?
Well, I'm going to be having a vigorous school year, and plus I take care of two little ones every day while my parents are away working. We all work together to keep the house as clean as possible too.
Oh, that's both so nice and sad, I'm sure your readers will miss you Gina! Well, before you have to leave, what would you say to other aspiring writers just beginning to write?
As one of my favorite people (Stan Lee) would say, "If you have an idea that you genuinely think is good, don't let some idiot talk you out of it!" Don't stop. Do whatever you can to keep your story/stories going. There are people out there that will love it/them!
That's a wonderful quote, it's so full of motivation! Moving on, is there a personal message you like to give to Butterflywriter13 for nominating you?
And I quote (she actually has become a very close friend of mine), "I love you, ya little cinnamon roll. Keep writing!"
Aw, that's so cute! Well, as for the final question, it's related to the community! What do you think is an attribute all CLN members share?
Rethinking awkward situations and reimagining them of how they could have gone worse ... That's what I do at least. To be honest, I kinda didn't know what you were talking about since I don't really know you guys. I'm so sorry!
No worries, your opinion is definitely unique and funny! Thank you so much for your time Gina!
Okay thank you so much! This was fun! God bless!
Thanks and I wish you all the best!
