Who's Calling at Such an Hour
It's a year to the day that you went missing. A year that Suga has lived and died a million times as every glimmer of hope of finding you is only crushed under the feet of fate.
"Evening Mr. Min." Says Officer Kowalski.
"Hello Officer Kowalski."
Once left alone, Suga leaves the alleyway after emptying the flask in his pocket and stumbles his way back to the nightclub. He bangs on the back door to the club, which is closest to the rooms where they live. He bangs even louder when he hears Jin yelling, "Hold your horses, Yoons, I'm coming!"
Suga hears the three deadbolts unlock and the key rattle in the door before it opens. He shoves his way past Jin in his warm winter pajamas.
"What took you so long?"
"I was on my way to bed and decided I wanted a nightcap. I was at the bar fixing it when I heard the pounding on the door. You want to join me?"
"Sure, I need a drink."
With just the light from the hallway shining into the bar, Jin pours Suga a whiskey, making a *hot toddy for himself.
"Did you take any pictures from my board? There's one missing." Suga was angry earlier when he found your picture missing. He finished off the whiskey he kept hidden in his closet to drown the pain and anger and left the club.
"No. I don't go in your dressing room. Maybe ask Namjoon."
Suga shrugs it off, "Doesn't matter anymore."
They are casually drinking, not bothering with chatter, when they hear the phone upstairs ring. Neither bothers to get up. Namjoon is upstairs; he can answer it, but who could be calling at two in the morning?
They hear a door slam, then the ringing stops, followed by heavy footsteps bounding down the stairs. Jin and Suga both turn to the sound of running footsteps.
Namjoon reaches the door, leaning with his hands on his knees, panting for breath. Jin jumps off the bar stool he is sitting on beside Suga and rushes to Namjoon.
"What's wrong? Has somebody died!?" That could be the only possible reason for a call at such an odd hour.
He pants, and between gasps for breath, he says, "They found her! They found her. They found her, she's alive!"
Suga drops his glass, and hitting the wood floor, it doesn't shatter but spills whiskey across the floor as it rolls.
He slides off his stool and grabs Namjoon by the collar, "What the hell are you babbling about!?"
Jin pulls Suga off of Namjoon. "Let him catch his breath!" Suga lets go and steps back.
Jin turns to Namjoon and grabs him by the collar, "What the hell are you *bumping your gums about!? Who? They found who!?"
Namjoon pushes Jin off of him. "Let go, and I'll tell you!"
Jin sits back at the bar, and Suga stands there staring at Namjoon, a thousand thoughts running through his mind, a thousand more feelings running through his heart. She's alive . . .
Namjoon takes several deep breaths. "That was Mary. She's pulling her first night volunteering at the hospital, and one of her patients is a young woman in a coma labeled 'Jane Doe.' When Mary went to take care of her, she was shocked when she recognized Novi."
Namjoon pauses to catch a breath, and his throat is dry, so he grabs the glass on the bar, not knowing it is Jin's hot toddy, and takes several gulps. He starts coughing, having a harder time catching his breath.
Jin gets back off the bar stool and begins patting Namjoon on the back. He finally holds his hand up for Jin to stop. "What the hell did I just drink!?"
Jin is about to tell him when Namjoon begins speaking once more.
"She said she immediately telephoned the police sergeant who handled the investigation and said they wouldn't allow her to call us till they could prove it was Novi. They compared dental records, and it's her. It's Novi. She's alive but in a coma."
'In a coma, a coma." Suga stands there in utter shock. He starts looking around at Jin and Namjoon. "I have to go to her! I have to go!"
They hear loud knocking on the front door of the bookstore.
Jin yells, "Who the hell?" and heads out the secret doorway in the storage room and peeks out from behind the shelves of books.
"Are we being raided?" asks Namjoon, panic evident as his tone raised several octaves.
"Oh my god, it's the *coppers!" Jin rushes back into the bar. "It's the coppers!! There at the door now!"
Namjoon starts yelling in a panic, "Hide the booze, hide it!"
Suga walks to the front door of the bookstore as Jin and Namjoon are stashing all the alcohol.
He unlocks the door and sees Officer Kowalski standing there, his hat in his hand.
Suga doesn't even get a chance to speak before Officer Kowalski says, "Mr. Min, they found her. They found your Novi. I thought you would want to know."
He also knew Mr. Min had been drinking, but he wouldn't arrest him, not tonight. That wasn't why he was here.
"I, I heard. Is it true? Please tell me, Officer Kowalski, is it really her?"
"Yes, I wanted to offer you a ride in my police car. We can head there, sirens blaring and lights flashing, Mr. Min, if you want. I'd be pleased to take you to her."
For too many nights, he has seen the brokenness in Mr. Min's eyes when he passes him at night on his beat, watching Mr. Min leaning on the alleyway wall smoking his cigar. This is the least he could do for the man.
Officer Kowalski speeds Suga to the hospital with sirens blaring and lights flashing. He stops at the entrance and runs in with Suga to make sure no one stops him.
He skids to a stop at the reception desk as Suga runs ahead to the elevator. He is pushing the button repeatedly, trying to hurry it up.
Officer Kowalski catches up, slightly out of breath, and says, "Second-floor long-term ward, room 214."
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, the elevator doors start to open, and Suga squeezes in, followed by Officer Kowalski as the doors fully open. Suga repeatedly presses the close door button.
"Since this case is reopened, there will be other officers there. We still don't know who did this to her or what happened. The person or persons may be still at large." Officer Kowalski informs him, preparing him for a police presence.
You have been in a coma and were listed as a 'Jane Doe' in the long-term hospital ward. When Mary recognized you, the whole ward broke out in chaos.
After hours of comparing dental records and confirming your identity, they called the number Mary gave them, and Namjoon answered the phone.
When Suga gets there, he rushes past officers and *dicks, shouldering them out of his way. As their superior, Officer Kowalski stands before them, blocking them from going after Suga. "Let him go, boys." They stand down but keep a wary eye on him.
Suga pushes the stout nurse out of his way as he enters your room, stopping dead in his tracks. It is you! He can't move, as if his feet were cemented to the floor.
