Forty Four
-Mia-
I was sitting on the floor, my back on a tree and my bare legs spread apart. I held back a scream as another shooting pain ran through me.
I wasn't sure what to do. I hadn't had the chance to actually sort out what was going to happen when I gave birth.
April was sat beside me, her face filled with worry as I tried to push the baby out of me. I didn't feel like I need to push, all I felt was pain in my lower abdomen than tingled around my body.
I cried out in pain, squeezing a hard stick that was on the floor. Everything around me was unhygienic for me and the baby. What if something went wrong?
"Mama?" April asked in a scared tone as I glanced at her, my body sweaty. "I-it's alright, April," I said before letting out a loud groan, the feeling of something pressing down on my lower body in me.
I started crying, not because of the baby but because nothing around me was safe and there was a high chance that something would go wrong or something had already gone wrong.
I wiped my eyes, not wanting to cry in front of April and groaned loudly, squeezing my eyes closed, only to open them once I heard the sound of someone calling my name from far away.
My eyes flew open and I looked at April. She didn't say anything.
"Mia!"
I looked around, wincing in pain. Someone was calling me.
"Mia!"
"April!"
"Here!" April screamed loudly and I soon heard the sound of fast footsteps coming closer.
That's when I saw him.
He was running towards us, a huge gang of men behind him. He quickly yelled instructions in Italian and some of them parted their ways, going in a different direction whilst some stayed.
"Vince?" I groaned, my hand on my stomach as pain ran through me.
He came over, breathless and kneeled beside me, a concern look on his handsome face. I cried out in pain, taking his hand and squeezing it. "The baby. .I'm in labour. ."
Dante came from behind him and I glanced at April who seemed to be shaking a little. "D-Dante take April away from here. .she can't see this." He did as I asked with no hesitated and took her away. That's when I noticed that Vincenzo's men were in a circle around us, guns in their hands and their back to me.
I let out a small scream, squeezing his hand. "Vince? It hurts." He nodded, "I know, I know, baby." He was about say something else when I interrupted, "Can you. .can you check down there?" I glanced between my bare legs and he nodded, moving to them, looking down before almost instantly moving away and turning his head.
"There's a head. .there's a head coming out of your-"
"You need to . . You need to be there. Stay there, you need to help me deliver the-" I cried out in pain, "the baby! You need to deliver the baby."
He looked at me in surprise before nodding. "What the hell am I supposed to do?"
I groaned, pushing a little. "The head comes out first. You need to be there for . . For when the baby fully comes out. I need your help. ."
"Can't we just. ." He tried to close my legs but I snapped them open, glaring at him. "Now isn't the time for jokes, Vincenzo!" I snapped, letting out a scream of pain.
He hid his smirk and I almost punched him for joking in a time like that. "Blankets. .we need blankets!" I said, before yelling in pain, my head going back as I arched my back.
"I don't have - " he then said something quickly in Italian and the men took of their leather jackets, not turning their backs but throwing them on the floor. Vincenzo quickly walked around, picking them up and coming back to me. "I've got these?"
I rolled my eyes a little, "they'll do." I cried out, "I need to push!"
"You sure? Can we just keep him in until the ambulance gets here?"
I slapped his arm, "stop fucking joking with me!"
"I'm not!" He argued. I grabbed his shirt, pulling him to me and looking at his eyes angrily. "Keep joking, I dare you." I then let him go before groaning, my head going back as I pushed.
He laid some the jackets on the ground and took off his, putting it on his lap before his hands went between my legs. "Push." I did exactly as he said and cried out loudly, pushing as hard as I could. "I can't. ." I breathed out, "I'm tired."
"Mia, come on, you can do it. Push!" I loudly cried out, pushing and pushing, using all my energy. I kept going, sweat running on me. I was pulling on the grass, taking my pain out on it.
Then, I felt something come out of me and the pain slowly went away. I closed my eyes, panting loudly as I leaned my head on the tree, relaxing a little before opening my eyes to see Vincenzo with his hands lowly between my legs.
He was looking down almost sadly and I gave him a weird look. "It's out, isn't it? Why isn't he crying?"
I didn't want to look down. He locked eyes with me, "I . . how am I supposed to know if he's alive?"
I almost screamed at his words. Panic ran through me but I still didn't look down. I didn't want to see something I shouldn't. "He's out. .he should be crying. .nip him," I said, looking at Vincenzo who had a panicked look on his sweaty face.
"Nip him? Won't that hurt him?"
"Nip him."
I saw Vincenzo's hand move a little and suddenly there was a loud and high pitched cry.
My eyes widened and Vincenzo lifted his hands and that's when I saw my baby.
Tears rolled down my cheeks quickly as tears came into his eyes.
The baby was wriggling a little in his hands, his father's leather jacket around him to keep him warm. He was naked, blood on him but Vincenzo used another jacket to wipe some of it away as the baby cried loudly.
I let out a happy and breathless chuckle, a wide smile on my face as Vincenzo somehow took a knife out his pocket and cut the umbilical cord.
He looked down at the baby happily before looking at me and slowly passing my new baby to me. Tears ran down my cheeks and I moved some of my torn shirt away before letting him place the crying baby on my bare chest.
I cried, my hands instantly going to his body as Vincenzo took the leather jackets and placed them over the baby and me. I cried, kissing my baby's forehead and hugging him gently as he cried himself, his small hands on my chest and moving a little.
"He's so small!" I cried, laughing a little. "And so beautiful."
"Shh. ." I whispered, his short brown hair tickling my chest. "Don't cry, baby." I cradled him, holding him close.
"I love you," I said, "I love you so much."
I was taken into the mafia ambulance not long after and as I laid on the bed in the vehicle, with the baby on my chest, I started to fall asleep, exhausted from everything.
I awoke in a hospital bed, wearing one of those gowns and without the baby in my arms.
My eyes slowly opened, the bright light almost blinding my vision.
"Finally awake!" I turned to see my best friend, closing a magazine and coming over to me, hugging me as I hugged her back. "Val!" I said quietly, my throat hurting and she smiled at me. "How are you feeling?" I groaned a little, "sore. .really sore."
"You've got some explaining to do."
Later
"I'm so tired," I told Maria and Val as the nurses took my baby out the room for more tests. "I feel like I'm going to pass out."
Maria chuckled, "that's what labour does to you." I sighed, rubbing my forehead before looking at them with a smile. "A baby. I've just freaking had a baby!" Valentina laughed a little, "a gorgeous baby too. What are you naming him?"
I shrugged a little, playing with the wire attached to my finger with a clip. "I was thinking of Noah, but once I saw him, I'm not too sure."
"Take your time," Maria told me, "it doesn't have to be a rush." I groaned a little, "I know but I don't want to keep calling the baby 'he' or 'it' or just 'the baby'. He needs a name." They nodded as the door opened and entered Leonardo holding a little girl in his arms.
I smiled, "hey, Leo." I realised that the little girl was Blaze, Maria and Leonardo's daughter. Blaze had electric, sapphire eyes just like her younger sister. She was beautiful with long brown hair and small freckles. Blaze was five, a year younger than her older brother, Zachary who was often called Zach.
"Hey, Blaze," I said and she blushed a little in shyness as her father placed her on the ground. She waved, walking over to her mother and sitting on her lap. Blaze was always shy and liked reading books with her mother.
"Hey, Mia, you feeling better?" Leo asked and I nodded, smiling. "Yes, thanks."
"How's the baby?"
"He's fine," I said, "they're just running some tests on him."
"Is April okay?" I asked, concerned for my other child. Leonardo nodded, "yeah. Vincenzo sorted her out and got her to sleep. She's fine, don't worry."
"Where's Zach?" Maria asked her husband and he replied by saying, "he's with Lili and the others." Maria nodded a little before Leo asked, "you guys want some drinks?"
I kindly refused while the others asked him what they wanted and he came back, giving them drinks.
We chatted for a while, laughing and joking until the door opened and Vincenzo came in.
I bit my lip, smiling a little while doing that. "Hey. ." I quietly said, trying to minimise the awkwardness.
"I think I should go check on Zach," Maria abruptly said before standing and glancing at at Valentina. "Oh, I think I should check on Ariana too. ." Val said but it sounded more like a question.
"Yeah, um, I'll go help with that," Leo said, glancing between me and Vincenzo before they all left, closing the door behind them.
"They weren't really going to check on the kids."
"No, they weren't."
He sighed, taking a seat near the hospital bed I was in. I bit my lip, fiddling with the blanket over me.
"You okay?" Vincenzo asked and I nodded, smiling a little at him. "Yeah, thanks, you?" He nodded, "I'm alright. Better now that I know you're okay."
"How's the baby?" Vincenzo asked. "He's - he's fine. They're still running tests on him." He nodded, "that's good. ."
"What. ." I hesitated before inhaling sharply and asking, "what were your ideas for naming the baby?"
He hesitated as well, "I was going to let you do that." I bit my lip before saying, "just tell me, please."
"Uh. .I was thinking of Dominic or Nathan, Xavier or Francisco."
"Francisco, Nathan?" I asked, a little surprised by his choices. He nodded a little, "yeah. .but you don't have to choose them. It's up to you."
"I. ." I started, about to tell him that it wasn't just my choice but I didn't. Something was holding me back.
His phone vibrated and he pulled it out of his pocket, checking it before looking at me. "I have to go - it's something about what happened."
I nodded as he stood. "Did you kill him?" I asked Vince. He bit his lip, unsure before saying, "he's dead." I nodded slowly, licking my lips. I wasn't surprised. "I did meet my father."
"You did? What happened?"
"He's wasn't bad like we thought he was. He - he just got caught in a bad crowd. He loved me. He wasn't with Nicolo by choice. .I saw him being shot in the neck. .he saved me."
Tears came into my eyes but I wiped them away, sniffing. He came over and took my hand, kissing it gently. "It's good you got to meet him and got his side of the story." I nodded, about to say something when his phone vibrated again. "Go," I said with a small smile.
He hesitated before kissing my hand again and moving towards the door. "Call me if you need anything," Vince said, "I'll come visit later." I nodded as he left, closing the door behind him.
I sighed, deciding to get some shuteye. I was exhausted. I lay down, closing my eyes and beginning to drift away.
I fell asleep and woke up the next day, bright and early.
The hospital let me get showered and changed and before I knew it, I was in one of the bathrooms holding my baby while giving him a bath.
I smiled at him, gently splashing water over his small body. I was kneeled over the small baby bath placed inside a larger bathtub for adults. The water was low and I was holding his head up, keeping his body in the right position.
He cooed, his eyes brightly looking into mine. "I love you. ." I said quietly as I splashed more water over him carefully, rinsing the soap off him. His face creased a little and his closed his eyes beginning to cry.
"Oh," I said, grabbed his soft, cotton towel and picking him up with it, gently drying him. "I thought you loved baths," I said as he cried in the towel whilst I dried him.
I went into the baby changing room, placing him on the nappy changing mat and grabbing the clothes that I had took out for him.
"You must be hungry, huh?" I said in a sweet tone as I quickly put his baby lotion on his body and changed him into the white onesie that Valentina had brought for him. I carefully put on his white bib around his neck, adjusting it properly so it wouldn't bother him. I slipped on his small socks before some soft shoes, and put on his little blue hat before picking him up and cuddling him.
"Don't cry, baby," I said, kissing his cheek and sitting on the rocking chair, cradling him as I unbuttoned my shirt, taking my breast out of my bra and placing it into his mouth, feeding him.
I sat upright, ensuring that I was feeding him properly. My eyes locked with his and he stared at me intently as he drank.
"You're so beautiful. ." I whispered gently, rubbing his cheek.
After that, I sat him in the proper burping position and rubbed his back, patting it a few times before he let out a loud burp. I chuckled, lifting him and kissing his cheek and cuddling him.
"That was a big one!" I said, holding him properly so he wouldn't be sick. He cooed a little, his eyes locking with mine. I kissed his cheek, "you're beautiful."
I was back in my room not long after. The baby was in his open incubator cooing and gurgling as he stared at the white wall above.
I was leaning over the bag filled with baby stuff that Maria had given me, fixing the nappies that were falling out.
"Knock knock."
I turned to see Vincenzo with a bag with the label 'Mothercare' on the side of it.
I smiled a little as he came in. "Hey, I was looking around the shops and I found something for him," Vincenzo said, glancing at his son laying in the plastic crib.
I smiled, "aww, thanks." He passed me the bag and I opened it, seeing a beautiful baby onesie attached with some pyjamas and an adorable coat. There was a small teddy attached with it too.
"It's beautiful," I said, placing it back on the bag. "Thank you." He shrugged a little with a shy smile, "it's alright."
I licked my lips, placing the bag on top of the hospital bed.
"Mia-"
"Vincenzo, I'm leaving."
He sharply inhaled, running a hand through his hair as I continued, "I meant what I said." He nodded slowly, licking his lips. "You're leaving?"
I nodded, blinking away my tears. "I'm leaving."
"With the baby?" I nodded, and he did too, licking his lips again. "And I'm guessing with April too?" I nodded again, blinking rapidly. "With April and the baby."
There was an awkward moment of silence before he said, "c-can I hold him?"
I bit my lip, nodding while sniffing. I walked over, smiling softly at the baby before picking him up, bouncing him gently before walking over to his father, passing him to him.
Vincenzo took him in his arms, cradling him and sitting down as I sat on the edge of my bed.
He held him so he was holding his head up and the baby's legs were facing him.
"Hey," he said quietly while looking straight at our baby as he cooed. "I don't think you remember but I did talk to you when you were still in your mother's stomach."
My breath hitched as he continued, "you're leaving with your mother and sister. .I'm going to really miss you." I dabbed the corner of my eyes to stop the tears from coming out.
"Remember when I told you," his voice cracked a little and he sniffed, keeping his head low so I couldn't see his eyes. "When I told you never to forget me?" He asked as the baby cooed in his arms, his hands moving in the air.
"Well, don't start now. Don't forget me, son. I'll come back and I love you - don't forget that either." I grabbed a tissue, wiping my eyes.
"I love you, little man," Vincenzo said, sniffing, one of his hands wiping his eyes before he held the baby properly in his arms and kissed his cheek before standing and passing him to me.
I held him in my arms before looking deeply into Vincenzo's sad eyes. I felt guilty and sad inside but I knew what I had to do.
He rubbed his nose. "What are - what are you planning on calling him?" I licked my lips, "I'm not really sure yet," I told him, my voice cracking a little. "But so far I've thought of one name floating in my head."
"I thought of Francisco. .Francisco Noah Rossi. .I know the middle name does really fit in-"
"Rossi? You're still giving him my surname?" Vincenzo asked in a little bit of surprise. I nodded, "like I said, you're his father." I placed the baby into his crib before walking over to Vincenzo and taking his hand.
"I will never let the baby or April forget you. I hope you understand why I'm leaving the kids," I said and he nodded his head down but I lifted it up, looking up into his beautiful eyes. "You need to fix yourself, Vince. For me and the kids. Our relationship is unhealthy and it needs to be fixed. You need to sort yourself out for us and until you do, we have to go. You can come to me when you have sorted yourself and we'll talk then. But I love you and I want this for you because I love you so much."
He squeezed my hand, "I love you to and I will sort myself out for you guys. Don't think otherwise."
"I won't," I promised, my eyes locking with his. "I believe in you."
"Hey. .you know, you never gave me me that sandwich," I said playfully as he chuckled, "What? The subway one? I'll get you a better one before you go." I smiled licking my lips.
He glanced down at my lips. "Can I kiss you one more time?" I nodded slowly, going on my tiptoes and wrapping my arms around his neck, kissing him lovingly. It was short and sweet and when he pulled away, I felt cold.
He pressed his forehead against mine, his eyes never leaving mine.
"I won't let you down, Mia."
"I know you won't, Vince."
