Ch9- the Archives
Janya, Vivesh, and Uday stood awkwardly for a second. They didn't know how to proceed exactly; they were all new to this alliance. Vivesh blew out air from puffed out cheeks, Janya crossed her arms and looked anywhere but at them, and Uday kept looking back and forth between Vivesh and Janya while tapping his foot.
"So..." Uday started. "What'd you find in the archives?"
"Wait," Janya interjected, "I want to know what you guys have so far."
"Not much," Vivesh said. "So far, all we've done is link the witness testimonies with pictures of the bodies."
Uday nodded. "We tried to see if there was anything significant that they noticed that may either be different from what we see in the pictures, or important to filling in the blanks about the pictures."
"What's important about them saying something different from the pictures?"
Vivesh answered this one; "The thing is, it'd prove that they lied and we'd been hoping to look into that."
Janya nodded slowly; someone within the territory might've been to blame. "And how do the archives fit into all of this?"
"I wanted to see if something from our past had something to do with the reason anyone would cause the killing here."
"And the rebellion at my engagement will only add on to these suspicions."
"Congratulations," Uday said suddenly. Janya blinked and looked at him.
"What?"
"You just said you got engaged. Doesn't that call for some congratulations? And is it Devraaj? It's no wonder you talk about him all of the time."
Janya frowned at him and shook her head. "Off topic," Janya whipped her hand out of its crossed position in a slicing motion through the air, "Completely off topic."
"Anyway," Vivesh cut in, "maybe the archives can provide us with a motive."
Janya turned back to her cousin at this and nodded. "What'd you find?"
Vivesh winced. "Not much, but a little lead is better than nothing."
"That's true." Janya walked around Vivesh to where the files were. The pictures and testimonies were spread out; some pictures were paired with the testimonies while others were just placed neatly aside. "So what in the archives were important?"
The boys, that had walked behind her earlier, now went to either side of her and looked too. Vivesh put the file from the archives down and opened it.
"From what I found, mostly things between Raghavans and Majumdars. But there are a few cases that came from neutral territory." Vivesh pulled out a certain, thick folder and handed it Janya.
She raised her brows as she weighed the folder in her hands. "A few?" Janya scoffed, raising a brow at her cousin.
Vivesh shrugged one shoulder. "Compared to all of the other cases in there."
"Would there be anything recent in the archives?" Uday asked, looking over Janya's shoulder at the folder.
"How recent do you need them?" Janya asked, opening the file and scanning over the first page.
"Within the last six months, maybe."
Janya sighed and looked up at Uday. "I thought you two wanted to check history."
Uday glanced at her, shrugged, and looked back down at the file. Janya furrowed her brows and looked back at Vivesh. Her cousin simply tapped the folder and nodded.
"These are older than that. We haven't had many disruptions in neutral territory for a long time. But..."
Janya nodded. "But that could be because someone was biding their time for the killing."
Uday snapped his attention towards Janya. "Hey--"
"I'm not making any accusations," Janya said without looking up. "I'm just saying that maybe someone wanted it to look that way."
Vivesh furrowed his brows. He held up a finger as he tried to decipher what Janya was saying. "Are you suggesting that maybe some disturbances were cleaned from the record?"
Janya shrugged. "I don't know what I'm suggesting. They could have been cleaned from the record or never recorded at all. There is a possibility that we have spies in our court."
Uday started shaking his head. "I don't think so. Why would your own people cause such a massacre?"
Janya looked at him. She saw the confusion in his face, wondering how many different scenarios he was contemplating in order to prove the Raghavans' innocence.
"If they're spies, they were never our own people to begin with," Janya explained, watching as Uday slowly looked up to meet her gaze. He searched her eyes, analyzing her stern expression. "Um... I'm still trying not to say it's a Raghavan."
Uday shook his head. "That's not what I was wondering."
Janya furrowed her brows. "Oh... Then what? Did you have something else in mind?"
Uday again shook his head. "Trying to."
Janya sighed. She looked away, feeling disappointed. She felt as if they were only coming up with more possibilities rather than narrowing anything down. This is the problem with ruling out the Raghavans, she thought. It was easier to blame one person -- or family. With the easy pick out of the options, many more were possible.
Janya picked up a witness testimony, but didn't really read it. She was lost in her own thoughts, wondering about Devraaj. Maybe this was why he didn't want to question the killing. He just became the commanding Head of the Majumdar territory. It would be merciful for that position to fix one problem easily.
Then she began to wonder about the Raghavan right beside her. Here he was, risking his life to prove the innocence of his people, while Devraaj was making plans for an attack. Every bit of her head was telling her to walk away and rally up the Goswamis for Devraaj. But her heart knew the responsibility of protecting her own, and therefore understood the Raghavan's stress.
Janya shook her head, knowing that she had already decided. Besides, she wasn't going to leave her cousin behind again.
Vivesh caught her movement and gave her a quizzical look. When Janya caught his gaze, she shook her head to reassure him that everything was alright. He nodded, but still had a stern expression.
He worried for his cousin, more than she'd ever allow him to without a scolding. Vivesh couldn't help but continue to question her reasons for helping a Raghavan. Thinking the evidence of the killing would not add up was a poor excuse. Janya needed more than that in order to help a Raghavan. Vivesh hated having to question the motives of his own cousin, but he knew how much she followed Devraaj, never mind how independent she was as the Goswami heiress.
As for Uday, he was very conscious of the two high class Goswamis in his midst. He was nervous, thinking they'd turn on him any second. He wanted to forget their heritage differences and be thankful that they're helping him. As much as he hated it bothering him, he couldn't let go of his Raghavan prejudice against the Majumdars and Goswamis. Uday was raised to believe that they were arrogant slime who were invested in cowardice and deception.
But at that moment, the three of them only had limited time and each other to clean up the mess that's been made. They had to rely on whatever they could get their hands on without anyone finding out.
Suddenly, Vivesh spoke. "Some of these files I'll have to take back and replace them with any more cases I can find. I'll also get some digital data from any files in our computer database."
Uday nodded, but Janya looked at her cousin sincerely.
"Are you sure that's safe?" she asked.
Vivesh looked up from the picture he was examining and met her gaze. "Why?"
Janya pursed her lips momentarily before continuing. "Don't you think Devraaj will pick up on your frequent visits to the archives?"
Vivesh bit his lip, for he had been thinking the same thing since he started gathering folders. "If he does, I'll think of something. But in the meantime, maybe you can keep his mind on other things, and arrange for more council meetings?"
Janya nodded. "Okay." She didn't exactly know how she could distract Devraaj, but if that's how she could help her cousin, then she'll also figure out a way.
The three went back into a mutual silence, mulling over their own dilemmas until late at night.
