Ch5- the Raghavan

It was the perfect timing. Mostly everyone was at the big engagement. But still, he didn't risk going to the gate; they would've asked for ID, and that meant checking his arm, wrist, or back of the neck to see what family he's from.

By looking at the inside of his left wrist, they would see the योद्धा tattoo. For he was a Raghavan.

He took back alleyways through the Majumdar territory. The Raghavan then turned onto a street, only to see entrails of a rebellion filter onto the streets. Villagers who weren't apart of it were running for their lives.

The Raghavan decided to mimic them by running wildly around them. That was his first mistake.

"No, please!" The Raghavan turned to see a rebel hold a woman as a shield from a group of Goswamis. The man had his gun pointed at the Goswamis and the woman in a choke hold. The Raghavan's morals took the better of him and he shot the man's gun hand from his vantage point. His weapon fell and the woman got to escape.

     That was his second mistake.

Suddenly a group of Goswamis and Majumdars were on him.

     "Who are you?"

"He's coming with us anyway. We have to round up all of the rebels. We'll just take the outsider with us."

Now the Raghavan couldn't have that. And so he did his final mistake; he raised his arms in surrender and backed up to try to show that he meant no harm. But this only showed off his tattoo.

Realization showed in their eyes. "RAGHAVAN!" one yelled.

This made rebels stop; if a Raghavan infiltrated their village, they were more than willing to stop the rebellion and kill the Raghavan.

And so the Raghavan ran. He was chased down the streets and the Raghavan went through the alleyways again. This way, smaller crowds could chase him. It wasn't until he got deeper into the alleys when the firing from all angles ceased to a minimum.

He then saw a fence and clambered over it. He sprinted in a zig-zag as some of the Majumdars and Goswamis climbed over while others tried to shoot at him by crouching at the fence.

The Raghavan was thankfully ahead of them. He made a turn and suddenly tumbled down a hill. When he stood, he noticed he landed at the back of a house. The Majumdars and Goswamis probably didn't know he stumbled upon it.

The Raghavan took this advantage and went to the house. He started checking the windows. The second one he checked was unlocked. He sidled it open and squeezed himself inside. He regained himself, closed the window, and ducked.

     And he waited.

Vivesh didn't see that one coming. He instinctively ran for Janya and started dragging her down the steps. Devraaj was given a weapon and he began herding the rebels.

     "Vivesh, give me a gun."

As much as Vivesh just wanted his cousin safe, he knew he had to obey. As Goswami heiress, she was the one who had to lead the Goswamis. He reluctantly handed her his second gun and she made her way to the Goswamis at one end of the banquet hall.

"All of you need to round up the rebels -- KILL NO ONE -- and gather them in the courtroom at the Head House, Understood?"

The Goswamis all said, "Yes ma'am," and started moving through the crowds in formation. Janya led one of them. Vivesh left the banquet hall and started patrolling the streets. Gunshots were heard, but it didn't look like anyone was killed. He was suddenly stopped by a Majumdar.

     "Who are you?"

"Goswami." Usually when you are asked for identification, they want to know which family.

     "Of Aditya or Manesh?"

     "Of Aditya."

The Majumdar sneered and let go of Vivesh. "Leave, neutralizer!"

Although the word itself wasn't offensive, it was meant to be. Aditya Goswami, Vivesh's father, tried to keep Goswamis neutral, but by still asking for Majumdars to protect them. It was Manesh Goswami, Janya's father, who said they had to earn the Majumdars' protection by becoming their mighty allies.

Vivesh held back his scowl and instead continued to filter through the chaotic crowd.

     "RAGHAVAN!"

Vivesh's heart stopped for a good moment. A Raghavan infiltrated the borders? How many were there?

But Vivesh noticed how the rebellion stopped and everyone was now after the Raghavan. Vivesh circled back and looked for any sign of Devraaj or Janya. He saw Devraaj first.

"Where's Janya?" Vivesh asked. Devraaj turned swiftly and glared at him before realizing who he was.

"I don't know. Last I checked, she was heading towards the west wall."

"Boss," a Majumdar interjected, "Isn't that where the Raghavan was spotted?"

"Oh shit!" Vivesh cursed. All kinds of bad scenarios came into his head. Was Janya taken hostage? Was she shot by the Raghavan?

What happened to Janya?

*

It wasn't until hours later when Vivesh found her alive, well, and pissed.

"If I saw him first, I could've just shot him! But no; instead you pointed him out and he ran, not even thinking that he could run as fast as he did. And out of hundreds of us, one Raghavan got away?!" Janya was yelling at a group of Goswamis.

     "He was fast," one muttered.

"I don't care if he was Milkha Singh! He should have been shot and DEAD!"

     "Janya!"

"What Vivesh?" She turned to him, still pissed. He didn't care and just wrapped his arms around her.

"I'm so glad you're safe. I was running wild thinking the Raghavan got you."

"I hope I'm dead before a Raghavan got me." Janya simmered down slightly and finally hugged him back.

Vivesh chuckled, just happy to see that she was okay.

"Go home Vivesh. You don't need to stay for clean up."

"Okay. But let me know when you get home safe and sound."

"Will do." And Vivesh left with that reassurance.

*

Vivesh finally made it home. He stepped over the threshold and sighed as he closed the door behind him. When he turned the light on, he almost crashed in shock.

*

The Raghavan lifted his head at the sound of someone arriving home. He had been sitting against the wall with his butt on the floor and his head buried in his knees. Now he stood from his position and stepped out of the room he had scrambled into earlier.

The Raghavan had his eyes shielded by his tattooed hand when the lights were turned on.

"Raghavan..." Vivesh pulled out his gun and pointed it at the Raghavan.

"No wait!" The Raghavan pulled out his gun and took the cartridge out. He then kicked the two pieces to opposite sides. Then he patted his own pockets and pulled out a Swiss Army knife, kicking that to the side as well. "Let me explain myself first. What's your name?"

"Vivesh Goswami, of Aditya Goswami. Now who the hell are you?"

     "The name's Uday. Uday Raghavan."
