Ch2- their Meeting
Just around the time Janya had finished up with the work, Devraaj told her to meet him in about an hour at a cafe. Janya went home to freshen up and clean herself off before meeting the young Head.
A good fifty minutes later, she was ready and went off to the cafe. Although she was at least three minutes early, Devraaj was already there, with a coffee mug at his lips and his attention far off. Janya walked in without a word and just simply sat down across from him. His gaze landed on her and she smiled at him.
"Afternoon, Janya."
"Afternoon, Dev." Janya waited for him to continue. When he didn't, she said, "Let's skip the formalities and go straight to it, Dev. Besides, you're the one who called me here, asked to meet me. Obviously you're the who had something on his mind."
Devraaj looked down at his mug and scoffed, nodding. "You're right."
Janya almost did a double take on the sudden compliment. Then again, he was probably only admitting that because they were alone.
"As you know, I am now Head. It is now up to me to make the decisions. And you are the Goswami heiress, since your guardian is dead and you're of Manesh Goswami." Suddenly, he cleared his throat, as if his next words would be hard to say. "So, do you agree with me when I say it's time we got married?"
Janya's heart fluttered rapidly in her chest. She couldn't breathe for a split second. That was a question she never thought she'd hear him say. Even as much as she always wanted to hear it, Janya always thought it'd never happen.
Janya beamed. "I'm in agreement!" she said happily. The man she was destined to be with, the boy she loved, finally proposed.
Devraaj smiled. "Good. I'm hoping to do a small memorial for the people we've lost today. By the end of the week, we should have our engagement."
Janya smiled and nodded. "What of today's events? What did you and your counsel say you'd do?"
After taking another sip of his coffee, Devraaj shrugged and said, "What do you mean? There's nothing to do except plan an attack on the Raghavans."
Janya frowned. "Dev, I saw the bodies. They didn't seem to be Raghavan marked, for one, and--"
Devraaj smiled and placed his hand over hers on the table. "Janya, I know. But does it matter?"
Janya opened her mouth to respond, but then realized it was a rhetorical question and shut her mouth.
"All we need is a reason to finally get them."
"Say it was the Raghavans. What good reason did they have to do the killing? Why do we need a good reason to strike if they're irrational?"
Devraaj nodded. "I'm glad you asked that question. If we lash out with violence, like they did, we wouldn't be any better than them. How would we prove that we are any wiser than they are?"
Janya nodded in understanding. "Alright, I see the point."
Devraaj sat back pleased.
"But... how are we proving that we're better than them if we punish them when they're innocent?"
Devraaj nodded at her question. "You make a good point Janya. But we can't know for sure." Janya was about to sit back until he continued; "Unless we directly ask a Raghavan. But I'll never trust a Raghavan."
Janya blinked. "What?"
"That was Abhimanyu Majumdar's mistake. My great-great-great grandfather. His mistake tore us apart because his Raghavan friend betrayed him. Left the family in ruins, until he built it back up with hatred fueling the bloodline."
"I know the story," Janya whispered.
Janya glanced at his neck, knowing the back of it is tattooed with अभिमन्यु (Abhimanyu). A reminder all Majumdars receive at the age of fourteen. Janya swallowed and looked down at her own Goswami mark.
A reminder at the age of thirteen of how Goswamis are banded together. Forever. And also a sign of loyalty, especially to the Majumdars.
As Goswami heiress, Janya could not do anything to destroy that loyalty.
She smiled and once again held Devraaj's hand.
