Ch11- at Night

Majumdar territory at night looked surprisingly peaceful. It was quite a sight to see for anyone who hasn't. There was a soft breeze, and it tickled the girl's skin as she walked upon the silent streets.

Constantly finding a new place to sleep wasn't easy, especially since there were more patrols these days.

She snuck into a truck from neutral territory two days before the killing occurred. She knew what the killing was for, and she had to come warn someone.

Unfortunately, the truck arrived the night of, and she had to reroute herself. To make matters worse, this only got her lost. She only had enough information to get her to where she needed to go from where the truck stopped. Once she went the other way, she no longer knew which direction she needed to go. And the territory was bigger than she thought. For all she knew, she could be going in the opposite direction of where she needed to go.

After the memorial, she realized she could only travel at nighttime. Broad daylight was too risky.

"The Head would kill you if he knew you were drinking on the job."

The girl stopped in her tracks.

"That's why you won't be telling him anything."

She quickly found a place to hide and ducked into the welcome darkness of it.

"What if we see something? How are we going to carry out a pursuit if you're drunk?"

The second voice chuckled. "I can hold my liquor better than you think, yaar."

The first voice sighed, seeming to refuse continuing the argument.

Once she heard their steps pass on, the girl slid out of her hiding spot and made a quick turn away from the direction they were going. She walked along, once again lost in her thoughts.

She found herself thinking of the boy she met after the memorial. A part of her wished she had taken his offer of help, but she couldn't tell who she could trust in this unknown place. He could've had ulterior motives of turning her in.

Besides, he had the band tattoo of a Goswami. The Goswamis were the ones who were chasing her before she bumped into him, and he could've been with them.

Shaking her head, she made another turn. She stopped walking when she noticed a dog sniffing around. It looked up at her, but didn't bark. It lazily sniffed the air for her scent before returning to the ground. The girl sighed in relief and walked past the dog.

Suddenly, the dog began following her. It stepped about the same pace as her and stayed close to her ankles. She smiled at the dog, wondering if maybe it was a stray. Then again, it probably only seemed to like her because she was beginning to smell like a stray too. It might've been convinced he belonged to her since they smelled the same.

At the same time, it didn't matter to her. The idea of a companion, dog or not, was a bit reassuring. She felt a small spark of hope that she hadn't felt in a long time.

The dog kept quiet and didn't stray away from her whenever she made random turns. Judging by the looks of the dog, it was probably a stray longer than she was in the territory, which meant he must know the place well. If only there was a way she could have the dog sniff out who she was looking for.

That was when a thought struck her. She opened the small bag that she had and dug around until she found the piece of torn dupatta. It was the last thing that was left behind by who she was searching for.

She stopped walking and the dog obliged, coming to her hands. She held out the dupatta and the dog sniffed it. It's ears perked up and it lifted its head. It turned in a circle, sniffing at the ground before looking up suddenly and heading towards a direction.

A smile spread across her face as she stood up and followed the dog. Every once in a while, the dog sniffed at the ground and started walking towards a direction again. She told herself not to get her hopes up.

That was until the next turn, when she was faced with the area she was originally at, the day the truck stopped. She couldn't believe it, she was back where she started, back where she knew she could find her original route.

She refrained from squealing and reached for the dog. She pet it gently and murmured her thanks in its ear. The dog wagged its tail and licked her hands happily.

When she stood again, she led the dog instead, and again they walked together as the information of her directions slowly came back to her. The dog trotted beside her feet, wagging its tail in anticipation. If she had a tail, she'd probably be doing the same thing.

She walked right past an entranceway that she didn't realize was being guarded by one Goswami and one Majumdar guard. They took notice of her and started to follow her.

"Miss, don't you know it's past curfew?" one of them asked.

She stopped, scared. Slowly, she turned around and offered a small smile.

"I'm sorry," she said, "but my dog was getting whiny," she gestured to the dog at her feet for emphasis. "He was waking everyone up, so I had to take him out for a walk."

The guards nodded. One was about to say good night, but the other nudged him.

"Alright, just show us some identification and you can carry on home."

Before she could say anything, the second guard interjected. "She's just walking her dog, leave her alone."

The first guard glared at him. "After all the people that have snuck into our territory, I'm not risking anything. Besides, she could be looking for the Raghavan that we still haven't found."

The second guard thought about it and nodded. He turned to her. "Identification, miss."

     Now she panicked. "I-identification?"

"Yes, miss. Please show us your family mark."

The girl slowly started to raise the sleeve of her right arm. She looked down at it to check the edge of her fake Goswami tattoo. It had faded already. She gulped.

"Any day now," one of them said impatiently.

She swallowed again. Looking up, she gently pulled up the rest of her sleeve.

     "Goswami? Aditya or Man--"

The first guard interrupted the second with a smack on the head. "Idiot! It's fake!"

They both looked at it now. "Miss, you'll have to come with us now --"

Before they can finish, she took off, the dog following close at her heels. The men shouted for her to stop and began chasing after her. She ran as fast as she could, and she glanced behind her to see them gaining on her. But before she could turn back around, she slammed into someone else.

She landed on her bottom, and looked up to see the men she hid from earlier. The one who was drinking quickly put away his flask as the Majumdar and Goswami guards caught up with her.

"Who's this?" The sober patrolman asked.

"An outsider with a fake Goswami tattoo. She needs to be taken to Head House for interrogation," the Majumdar guard said.

She spat at his feet. "Kabhi nai!" (Never!) she yelled. Scrambling up on her feet, she prepared herself to fight.

In anger, the Majumdar guard took out his gun and pointed it at her head. The dog growled and pounced on him, digging his teeth into his gun hand. The guard cried out in pain and tried to shake the dog off. The dog let go and then jumped higher, biting into his neck. The feral animal dropped onto all fours, man's blood dripping from its maw. Everyone looked in horror as the man went down, with blood gushing from his neck. The dog growled lowly at the body.

The girl jumped at the sound of a gun. She looked to see the dog on the ground, a gaping bullet hole in its head.

"Evil fucker!" The Goswami guard said, his gun still pointed at the dog.

The girl felt lost again. The dog, her only guide, and her savior too, was now dead. She didn't think she could find her way back again without it.

She yelled, something like a war cry. She rose, becoming as feral as the dog. And she lunged, ready for the kill.
