The last minute escape

The Space Lybrary of Ville De Sorts

Becky

As the lights twisted around me I closed my eyes trying to convince myself what I saw. Before the portal had closed, I saw her. The Witch. Her glowing green eyes piercing my skin with her stare..but before I could think more about it, the wooshing white-blue light dimmed and I was thrown forwards onto a hardwood floor.

My mum gazed down at me before saying
"Oh thank goodness, we made it..listen Becky dear, I have to go get the Head Librarian and get some files checked for you." Then she ran off, leaving me on the floor.

I watched her hurry away into the long hall and out of my sight. I shighed and looked aroud, noticing the plack above the portal now said Ville De Sorts instead of Gimmson City. I was glad to get out of there, but I did't know what to expect here. From what my mother told me, I had a big family; both grandparents, parents, a greatgrandmother..I was thinking about my home when a voice behind me broke my thoughts:

"Are you alright?"

I turned to see a girl with blond hair and blue-green eyes looking at me.

"What do you mea-" Then it dawned on me that I was still sitting on the floor.

"Oh yeah."

She helped me up and said with a smile

"I'm Julie Ackerman Stars."

"Becky." I said. "Becky Smith."

"Nice to meet you Becky Smith." She grinned at me.

"You too." I grinned back.

I was about to ask her something when my mum came into the room. She looked at the floor as though she exspected me to still be on the same spot, then at Julie, then at me.

"Oh hello Julie dear!" She exclamed after realising who I was talking to.

"Hi Mrs. Smith."

"Oh we'll be late.." she muttered to herself "Becky come on we have to go..umm, Julie say hi to your parents for me. Goodbye!"

"I'll say you said hi, bye Becky!" She shouted across the room as my mum was hurriyng through the halls. I heard the librarian shush at Julie for shouting and smiled to myself. Well, she seems nice.

"How do you know her?" I asked mum.

"She's our next door neighbor."

"Oh wow. Great." I replied.

I was happy to know someone here since I didn't really hang around with people back at the orphanige except those black-haired twins Olivia and Felix. They were quite nice to me and had often invited me to come sit with them at mealtimes. I wandered what could they be doing right now, would they ask the headmistress where I was? I left so abruptly that I didn't even say goodbye to them. I was so deep in my thoughts that I didn't even notice that we got out of the library.

I stared around looking at everything in awe. The streets were no longer dirty and bland, but fun and full of color. People rushed by, engadeged in conversation and the smell of a variety of different foods lingered in the air.

It amazed me how the streets were so clean and neat. There were parks, shops, restaurants and lots of trees. My mum tugged at my hand to turn left. We waited for the cars to pass and crossed the road.

I focused my eyes on the black-white pattern of the crosswalk and it amazed me to see how clean the road was. Back in Grimmson you couldn't find one patch of the road without the stains of dirt, mud or even blood. The homeless always got into fights for food and I would often watch them through my bedroom window in the orphanige. The headmistress always told me not to look at the fights and I told her I wouldn't because I didm't want her to get angry at me but I still found myself glued to the window at night, watching soneone get puched in the face. I learned from that. I know that they always fought for food or some kind of supplies, so I promised myself, that when I grow up I'm gonna get a well paid job and a better life. I knew that Grimmson City was one of the poorest and most crowded places and all I wanted to do was get away, so you can imagine my suprise when my mum showed up in the middle of the night on Halloween and told me I'm a witch.

I guess I got lost in my thoughts again, because when I looked up I saw a beautiful white and blue house with a back garden and a pumpkin pach in the front.

"Wow." I gasped as my mum rumaged through her bag looking for something. Then finally, she pulled out a small silver key and handed it to me.

"Becky, this is yours now. I've kept it for years and now you've come home..I think it's time for you to have it. "

A smile crept onto my lips as I took the key into my hand. The cold metal felt cool on the plam of my hand. I opened the door of the house and stepped into my new life.
