My shoulder is cramping again. I readjusted as best I could to no avail. My arms were bound behind my back by what felt like a rope. It dug into my skin tightly, though, trying to cut it with the freezing wall behind me didn’t help. If not for the feeling of something wrapped around my head, covering my eyes, I would have thought that I was trapped in a perpetually darkened room. I have no idea how long I’ve been here. It could have been hours or months, I couldn’t tell.

I sighed as the back of my head hit the wall. Thinking logically, it couldn't be more than a few days. I hadn't been offered food or water once since I've been here. Just thinking about food made my stomach knot and turn. How long can people survive without water? Three or four days, right?

Sometimes, footsteps and voices would echo into the room. The first few times, I tried imagining who they might belong to. I didn’t see them when they nabbed me. Everything happened so fast. A deep, gravely voice caught my attention, but I couldn't quite make out what he was saying. I nicknamed that voice eye-patch man, even though he probably didn't have one. The way he talked simply reminded me of a pirate and the name stuck. It wasn't like I had anything else to go off of.

Why am I here? Once again, the back of my head hit the wall. I tried piecing my day together like a jigsaw puzzle, searching for some sort of answer.

It was a nice day. The sun was shining and the smell of water from a nearby water fountain perfumed the air. A chime from a nearby school sounded, signaling that it was time to go home. The plastic bags in my hands were beginning to feel heavy as I walked the all too familiar streets to my house. I had plans to surprise my boyfriend with dinner and I was headed on my way back from the store.

He had seemed so distant lately. Jin usually visited my house daily, but his presence grew sparse with each passing day. I tried to talk about it and he waved it off. "I'll explain everything soon. I'm just not ready yet." I remember him saying those words. I'm sure to him, that was meant to be comforting, and put my mind at ease. It didn't. If anything, it made me worry and speculate even more.

The surprise was supposed to be our turning point. Things were a bit rocky right now. Every relationship has its occasional bump. I planned on making him something nice, show him that I care and he could trust me with whatever it is he had to say. Then, we'd clear the air and everything would be better. A happy ending.

My heart sunk and my chest grew heavy. It was hard to breathe. When I finally managed to take a breath, it was shaky and weak. The fabric tied around my eyes soaked up my tears. The next part of my day was a mistake. I walked down a narrow alley— a shortcut home that I seldom took. A set of hands grabbed onto my arms, ten fingers dug into my skin. Their grip burned like fire. A veil of blackness obscured my vision. I tried to call for help. A hero, a police officer, Jin, it didn't matter which one. Anyone would have done. Something covered my mouth, and my screams were muffled instantly.

I was forced into a car. There, they tied my arms behind my back. The sound of the engine humming and gruff voices laughing and muttering amongst themselves, and my light sobbing were the only things that accompanied me during the ride. Eventually, I was thrown into a cold room. My body slammed against cement and my head practically bounced off the floor as soon as I made contact. I forced myself onto my knees and felt around with my shoulder. It took time, but I eventually found the wall that I'm now leaning against.

People rarely entered the room. The first time it seemed like one had opened the door just to look at me and laugh at my misery. I nicknamed him Rat. His laugh was obnoxiously high pitched and he just sounded exactly like one to me. Not the animal, like an awful human being.

The room was silent. Even the smallest movement I made echoed and bounced off the walls. Doing so much as shifting my foot boomed like explosives. Another round of voices passed by and disappeared into the distance. This is it. This is where I die. Cold and alone in some dark room some, unknown, reason.

I closed my eyes. Twitching my finger was hard. Breathing was hard. Everything about staying alive was hard. Is this what dying feels like?

The already tear-soaked fabric absorbed a few stray tears. Thinking about everything I hadn't gotten a chance to do made me realize how much life I had yet to live. Dying here meant that I'd never get married or have kids or even see that new movie that I've been meaning to go watch.

My chest fell flat. It was as if my heart crumpled up in a tight ball. I bit my lip as tears finally escaped the blindfold's barricade and rolled down my face, hitting the concrete under me. "I-I never got to make that surprise dinner." I choked out those words between broken, frail breaths.

I couldn't imagine what Jin was thinking right now. Has he noticed that I'm missing? Silence filled the room. "Yeah, I'm sure he has. He must be worried sick."

A voice echoed from outside my door. My lip twitched into a slight smile. It sounded like Jin. His voice rang out again. It sounded like he was calling my name. It sounded so real like I could reach out and touch him. I opened my mouth to reply. Nothing. Now, I was truly convinced that I was dying.

I remembered learning that people often see and hear the ones they miss right before passing. Personally, I've always chalked it up to hallucinations. Admittedly, pre-death delusions aside, it was comforting hearing him. I almost felt like I could die a little bit more at ease now.

A loud boom filled the room. I held my breath and every inch of my body ran cold. Footsteps quickly grew louder and louder until they stopped. Fear sunk in. Someone was standing in front of me, and I had no idea what was going to happen to me. My mind raced with as many guesses as possible, each guess more terrible and painful as the next. With every ounce of my strength, I clenched my eyes shut, even though I already couldn't see anything.

My name was called. TheMy heart nearly stopped. "Jin?" I choked out.

Rough, yet warm, hands caressed my face. "I'll get you outta here, just gimme a second. Are you hurt? Did they touch you? I swear if they laid a finger on a single hair on your head."

The blindfold fell off. My eyes fluttered, adjusting to the small bit of light coming from the open door across the room. Jin sat on his knees in front of me. A deep frown painted his face with a slight quiver. Jin breathed in as his lips pressed together in a tight line.

It looked like he had been roughed up a bit. His hair was a mess and he had scrapes and small cuts adorned with dry blood littering his face. A deep purple bruise on his cheek snagged my attention. He’s asking if I’m alright? Look at him.

The hand he had placed on my cheek trembled as he stared at me. His body hunched forward until his forehead rested on my shoulder. Jin wrapped his arms around me.

His hugs always had an air of playfulness to them. In some cases, it felt like he tried squeezing the air out of my lungs. This one was different. It was gentle and careful like he was handling something as fragile as butterfly wings. The room went quiet, it was as if time slowed to a halt. Only continuing once Jin's arms slipped from my shoulders. His eyes had redness to them. He cleared his throat. "Now isn't the time. Let's get you out of here."

Once freed from my bonds, Jin offered me both his hands. I took them in mine, and he helped me to my feet. We stood for a moment, hand in hand. I tried to tighten my grip to no avail. All this was too hard to believe. I had just accepted my death and that I would never see Jin again. Still, here he was, right in front of me. I wasn’t convinced that this all wasn’t a dream.

“Are you ready to get going?” he asked. I nodded. Slowly, Jin let go of one of my hands and carefully began to walk. His watchful blue eyes stayed on me.

My legs trembled under my own weight, it was like I forgot how to walk. I took an unsteady step forward that was about as graceful as a newborn deer. Jin looked worried. Suddenly, his eyes lit up. He knelt down, his back towards me. "Hop on my back. I'll let you down when you're ready to walk on your own."

My arms wrapped around his shoulders and he, in turn, hooked his under my legs. I held my breath, burying my face into the back of his neck, as he rose to his feet. Jin spoke in a calm and cautious tone. "Don't worry, I got you." He chuckled under his breath, though, he didn’t sound very happy. “I’m not gonna drop you.”

We got around much faster than what we would have if I walked with Jin. For the first time, I got to see where I was taken with my own two eyes. It was a dimly lit building made of what appeared to be heavy metal walls. An occasional flickering light was mounted on the hallway ceiling. Doors that were akin to heavy cell doors were spaced out from each other.

"Where are we?" I paused, realizing that I had other, more perplexing, questions. "How did you find me?"

"I'll explain everything later," he replied.

"Jin," I muttered; "please."

He kept walking. After opening a door that led to another, similar hallway, he sighed. "Okay. You deserve to know. I just- where do I start?"

"Where are we?" I repeated.

Jin explained that I was taken by a group of villains that was quickly increasing in numbers. They force random, innocent people to join by using whatever tactic they had in their arsenal. Blackmail, threats, bribery, torture, anything that could work was on the table. Those that refused would be killed.

I listened to Jin talk. My throat felt dry and it was hard to swallow. "How did you find me?"

Once again, Jin went quiet. His silence worried me. "I wanted to talk to you about this later."

"Well…" My voice trailed off. "If you don't want to talk about it now, I won't make you. You saved me, after all. But promise me that we will talk about it soon."

"Okay," Jin replied.

"Promise?" I asked.

"Promise," he repeated. My hold on Jin tightened as best as I could. Though, I'm sure it felt weak and pitiful to him. I nuzzled my cheek into the back of his neck and thanked him. "You're welcome."

"So, where are all the bad guys?" I noticed that we have gone undisturbed this entire time. A sickly eerie feeling sunk in, hearing voices but seeing the empty hallways.

"Most of them are looking for new-" he hesitated; "recruits."

Jin continued on. "The others that stayed here, well, I took care of them." I had no idea what that entailed. Jin chuckled. "They're a bit tied up at the moment if you know what I mean."

“All by yourself?” I asked. Jin is tough, he's been through a lot of hardship and managed to scrape by. Unfortunately, some of those challenges in his life include him being a bit of a troublemaker. Regardless, I couldn’t imagine how he could have fought off more than three people and get away with a bruise and a few cuts.

Still, he seemed proud of his little joke. "Oh, I see." I tried to force out a laugh, but my lungs burned and I erupted into a coughing fit. Jin asked if I was okay and I nodded.

"Just take it easy for now, okay?" I nodded again.

The warmth of Jin's skin against my cheek lulled me into a relaxed state. Something about the aura he gave off melted away my fear. My eyes felt heavy and before I knew it, I was engulfed in calm darkness.

"Hey, you're home," Jin spoke in a low voice, undoubtedly trying to be as gentle as his gruff voice would allow.

I opened my eyes and was greeted by a sight that I thought I'd never see again. My living room. I've never appreciated anything in the little room before, but I suddenly felt so grateful to have a roof over my head. Jin glanced over his shoulder, his sky blue eyes settled on me. "Are you still tired?" I nodded.

Jin walked to the couch. He carefully set me down. In one hand, he picked up the blanket haphazardly tossed over the armrest. The blonde scooped me up and sat down, placing me on his lap. He swaddled the two of us under the blanket, hugging me close to his chest. "Comfy?" I nodded. "Good."

We cuddled together. I pressed my cheek against his ear and felt for his heartbeat. It was slow and steady. His hand lightly ran up and down my arm. Every so often, I'd glance up at Jin. He seemed like he was moments away from dozing off, but yet, stubbornly trying to fight it off.

I smiled at him. "You can sleep, you know."

Jin shook his head. "Nah, I've got lost time to make up for and I want to be awake for it."

"Lost time?" I didn't understand what he meant by that.

His hold on me tightened. He swallowed hard before speaking. "You were missing for two whole days. I didn't know what to do. I felt like I had lost my whole world."

The corner of his mouth twitched. Jin rested his cheek against the top of my head. "I couldn't sleep. I couldn't eat. I just- I needed to find you and bring you home safe and sound."

"As soon as I found out where you were, I had to go. They told me not to- that it was dangerous. I had to though." I buried my face into his shirt. My face was quickly heating up and tears were beginning to fill my eyes.

Who are… they? I didn't bother asking. All that mattered was that Jin and I were both safe.

A finger brushed up against my cheek. "Hey, hey. Don't cry," he hushed.

He pulled me away slightly and slipped his thumb under my chin, lifting up my gaze to his face. I stared into his beautiful light blue eyes. They looked worried. "I want you to smile. I don't ever want to see you cry. It makes me feel bad."

I rubbed my eyes with the palms of my hands, clearing away the tears, and nodded. "Are you hungry?"

Starving. Though, I didn't want to tell him that I literally couldn't remember the last time I ate. If he didn't want to make me sad, I didn't want to make him worry. In a quiet voice, I answered. "Yes."

Jin grinned. "Okay, then leave dinner to me." I was taken aback by his words. Jin never cooks. This whole time, I just assumed he didn't know how to. He shifted in his seat and pulled out his cellphone. He playfully waved it in the air, his grin widening. "I'll buy us the best take out money can buy."

I let out a small laugh, followed by a coughing fit. "Hey, take it easy will ya." Jin rubbed my back until it stopped. Quietly, I apologized.

"Nah, there's no need to apologize. Just do me a favor and get better soon." Before I could say anything, Jin waved his phone. "Leave ordering to me  It'll be my treat."

I listened to Jin talk on the phone as he ordered for both of us. A wave of guilt washed over me. He just saved my life and now he's buying dinner like nothing even happened? I need to make this fair.

I smiled at Jin. "When it's ready, can I pick it up?"

The look on his face was practically asking if I was crazy. "No! You need to rest up." I inquired if we could pick it up together. Making him go out into the cold and pick up food after everything he had done left a bad taste in my mouth. Jin grinned as he rubbed the back of his neck. "Actually, I ordered delivery so neither of us have to leave."

He scooped me up in his arms and snuggled into my neck. His breath tickled my skin. "I want to spend as much time with you as I can. So if I don't have to leave, then I won't."

By the sound of it, Jin was going to be stubborn about this. In the end, it didn't matter to me. That just meant I got some extra time to have him all to myself as well. He slouched into his seat. “If you want to take another nap, you can. I’ll wake you up when dinner is ready.” I shook my head, I wanted to cuddle a little bit longer.

As nice as sitting in a quiet room with Jin was, I had just spent two days in a cold, dark, quiet room. The silence was unnerving. “Jin, can we watch tv?” I asked.

He looked at me with a quizzical expression on his face and asked if I wasn’t tired anymore. “I am,” I replied; “I just- it’s too quiet.”

Jin ran his fingers through my hair. “Yeah, that makes sense. I can imagine you will be sleeping with sounds and lights on for a while, or at least you calm down.”

He grabbed the remote and flipped through the channels. Jin mumbled to himself. “The news? Nah, too depressing. Sports? No. Horror movie? No, again. Romcom? Too cheesy.” His face lit up. “Oh! Are cartoons alright?” I nodded.

Jin lightly rubbed the back of my neck. Jin was watching the show. Not me, though, I was tuning it out, enjoying the comforts around me. The background noise, the warm blanket, and Jin’s delicate touch.

A knock at my door made me jump. Jin hugged me close and shushed me. “No, no. Don’t worry, it’s just the food, don’t be scared.”

He turned to the front door. “Be there in a second!”

Jin returned his attention to me. His eyes softened and he gave me a comforting smile as he talked. “Don’t you worry. I’m just gonna put you down and be right back.”

He turned away from me and began to walk. As fast as I could, I reached out and snatched his hand. “Are you sure you don’t want me to go get it?”

“Nah, it’s alright, you just relax,” he replied. I frowned at him. Jin blinked, he had a bewildered look on his face. “What’s wrong?”

“You have dried blood all over your face and some on your shirt. Don’t you think you’re gonna scare the delivery person?” Jin looked down at his shirt. The blue fabric had dark splotches on it.

Jin ran his fingers through his hair. “Ah- well- I get what you’re saying. It’ll be fine, though. Just relax.” He left me with the blanket. His footsteps grew fainter as he got closer to the front door. I could just barely hear him speaking. I pulled the fuzzy fabric close to my face. He’s so stubborn.

Another voice spoke to Jin for a while and the door closed shortly after. He held onto the bag as he sat down in his spot. “Let’s see here,” he mumbled. Jin placed a plastic box on my lap. I thanked him before cracking it open and seeing what he had gotten me.

A small side of plain white rice packed beside an egg and vegetables, a section of the plastic box had something that smelled like beef soup. “I figured you’d want something plain. I don’t know what they’ve been feeding you, so I don’t want to upset your stomach.”

They fed me air. I bit my lip, knowing that I really couldn’t tell Jin that. We spoke while we ate. I could see beyond his tone, he was trying to sound like nothing happened, a normal everyday conversation. I didn't want to bring down the mood, so I followed his lead. “Have you ever cooked before?” I asked.

“Not really. I didn’t really have a chance to learn how to.” He poked at the food sitting on his lap. “My parents didn’t get a chance to teach me or anything.”

“I can teach you,” I said.

Jin looked at me with a wide-eyed expression on his face. He smiled back at me. “Well. Yeah- why not. You’re not gonna be mad if I burn anything, right.”

“Of course not!” I answered.

He hummed in thought for a moment. “Even if I accidentally burn down your kitchen.”

I lightly punched his shoulder. “Oh, stop it. You’re not going to burn down my kitchen.” Jin chuckled under his breath.

Having food in my stomach gave me a rush of energy. Things were beginning to feel real again. I leaned against Jin’s arm and nuzzled into him. “Thank you for the food.”

I stood up and placed the plastic container on the coffee table. My legs still felt like jelly, but I didn’t feel like I would topple over if I walked. Jin stood up immediately. “Are you okay? Are you sure you can stand up so suddenly?”

I placed my hands on his chest and felt muscles under his shirt. Gently, I nudged him until he sat back down onto the couch. “Don’t worry, I’m fine. I’ll be right back.”

The rest of my house was dark. My fingers glided along the wall as I walked. Eventually, I found a light switch. My hallway lit up instantly. A door leading to the bathroom shared the same wall as the switch.

Light from the hallway poured into the bathroom. I dug around in the dimly lit room until I found an untouched white box in a drawer. “Ah! Here it is!” Holding the box close to my body, I returned to Jin.

“I found it!” I held out the box as I took my seat next to Jin. He cocked his head to the side and looked at the box. He seemed confused. Before he could ask me any questions, I lifted the lid and revealed the contents inside.

Bandages, creams, and gauze filled the box. I picked up one of the small packets and ripped it open. “What is that?” he asked.

“Alcohol swab.” I pulled out a small white pad from the wrapper. A deep frown crossed his lips. I reached out towards his face and Jin leaned away from me. “C’mon, Jin, you have cuts and dried blood on your face. We need to clean you up.”

He looked at my hand with heavy apprehension on his face. Jin groaned and leaned forward. He winced as I carefully tapped the alcohol swab on one of the cuts. “Oh, sorry.” I pulled my hand away and softly blew into the cut. His tense body relaxed a bit. After giving him a moment, I continued to clean off his face.

My fingers lightly rested under his chin while I dabbed away the dried blood. The entire time, Jin had a sad look on his face. Occasionally, he'd let out a groan whenever I went to clean off a cut. By the time I was finished, he looked and sounded like a kicked puppy dog.

His face still appeared roughed up, but he looked a lot better with the dried blood off his face. “There we go, you’re all done.” I placed my hands on my lap and smiled at him.

Jin still seemed a bit upset. I leaned in close to him. "What? Is my big, strong hero going to cry over some alcohol swabs?"

"It stung, you know," he replied.

My lips grazed his. "Well, you're still very brave, and I owe you a lot."

Jin glanced towards the floor, a pink undertone stained his face. He rubbed the back of his neck.  “Thanks, it really isn't a big deal though.”

It was clear that he didn't understand how serious I was. I owed Jin my life. If he never got me out, I would have been dead. I don't think I'd ever figure out how he managed to find me, but I'm grateful.

"I wouldn't have left a single stone unturned," he continued.

I tilted my head and raised a brow. "Left a single stone unturned?"

"When I spent those two days looking for you. You're my everything. I don't know what I'd do if I ever lost you." This time around, my face was the one heating up. My chest knotted as he spoke. "You're the best thing in my life. And I don't mean it in that sappy, exaggerated way most people would mean it. No, I'm being literal. You are literally the best thing in my life."

Jin paused and swallowed hard before continuing. "I don't got a lot going for me, so I just want to keep you safe. If I lost you, well, I don't think there'd be any more good things in this world left for me. I would just be lost."

I pursed my lips as soon as I felt them beginning to tremble. My chest grew heavy and my vision blurred as tears collected until they began to fall. No one has ever held me on such a high pedestal before. My natural reaction to hearing such a wonderful compliment is to cry? I'm so lame.

Jin's hands were firmly placed on my shoulders. "I did it again. I just said I don't ever want to make you cry. I don't know what I said, but I take it back. Cheer up, okay?"

"No, no, don't take anything back." I wrapped my arms around his neck. My lips grazed his bruised cheek as delicately as possible. "You're so good."

Jin snuggled into my neck and laid down a trail of kisses leading up to her cheek. Leaving ticklish prickles from his stubble in its wake. "Well, you're the goodest."

I smirked. "And that's not a word."

"You deserve a new word to describe you, though. So, I made one up." I tried to deny that. Jin's face softened and he smiled at me.

I wrapped my arms around Jin and laid down onto the couch, dragging him down with me. With his body weight on me, it was hard to breathe, but I didn't mind. A commercial played in the background. My fingers tangled into his short blonde hair while I listened.

Another sound caught my attention, light snoring. Jin's breathing was slow and rhythmic. "I love you," I whispered.

Jin grumbled between snores. "I do more."

I bit my lip and stifled a laugh. Even when he's sleeping, he's so stubborn. Well, that's my Jin.
