Chapter 2 -- Am I a dog or a monkey?

"No, I'm not Thomas. We've already established my name is Owen." He fidgets with his button up shirt.

"Ever heard of villains that lie?" I scoff.

He nods his head slowly, "Okay, but I'm not him. I promise."

I laugh in his face, standing to my feet now, "Like your promise means anything."

Owen, or Thomas, whoever he is, steps away from the bars in a huff. I don't know why he can't admit he's Thomas. It's not like I can turn him in at the moment. My hands are... tied. Dang it, why won't the puns go away?

He walks away, not bothering to turn out the lights again. "Wait," I yell at him.

I hear him sigh in response, "What?" He snaps.

"Can I still have that banana?"

I'm answered with the sound of his footsteps going up the stairs. Great, I'm locked away and I'm going to starve. What could be better than this?

At least I know that Mason, Ash, and Jonas are looking for me. I mean, I'm not sure what time it is, but they'll all wake up eventually to see I'm gone. Granted, it's not a school morning so it may be mid afternoon before they decide I've 'slept' too long and realize I'm not in my room.

I'm going to be here a while.

Speaking of time, where is my Fitbit? I wear it all the time, even when I go to sleep. Did Owen take it off? You've got to be kidding me. He won't even let me keep track of time? I'm going to go insane.

Perhaps there's a television somewhere. I would like some sort of entertainment if I'm going to be here for a long time. Maybe the guys will let me out to play ping pong.

What am I saying? I'm trapped behind bars and I'm not even going to attempt to get out? These handcuffs can't stop me from using my powers. I'll, uh... Huh. I guess none of my powers are really helpful in this situation. Unless I use my invisibility to trick the villains.

Wait. That could work. I can make the villains believe I broke out of the cell and they'll open the door to accidentally let me out! It's worth a shot.

I try to create the feeling of insecurity and emptiness that usually comes along with my invisibility. When the power grows strong enough to where I think it's working, I'm shocked by the results. Literally.

"Ahh!" I holler out in agony. I bite down on my lip, trying to keep tears from flooding my eyes.

I hear several footsteps coming my way. Great, now they're going to tell me to shut up so they can get back to their game.

"What happened?"

"What's wrong?"

They all question me at once. Why are they showing me any concern?

"Can someone explain to me why I was just, uh, electrocuted?" I breathe through gritted teeth, trying to work through the pain. I knew the cuffs were energized in some form but this was to an extreme I hadn't experienced. I use both hands to massage my wrists, but it feels like the current is coursing through my veins.

All of the villains look to each other and then all eyes land on the guy closest to me. Except, it's not a guy, for a change. I knew there had to be at least one female villain, but I didn't know there was only one.

Her eyes narrow at me, hatred clear in her eyes. She crosses her arms over her chest and huffs. What's her problem?

"It's the cuffs, moron. They disable your powers." I blink, trying to take in this new information. When did power disabling handcuffs become a thing? I know I'm new to the super world, but the media has never mentioned any device like this. Perhaps it's a new technology.

"Ah, well, it's a good thing I won't be using my powers." I seethe as I clench my wrists harder, biting my lip to keep from showing too much weakness. In all honesty, I'm powerless, so I'm as weak as a baby kitten and they know that.

She rolls her eyes, "They only shock you when you try to use your powers."

So now I have a shock collar. Am I a dog or a monkey?

She snaps her fingers and the guys follow her back into their hangout area. I'm left alone, sitting on the ice cold floor in a prison cell with fluorescent light shining on me. I know I'm meant to be their prisoner, but they have to have something planned for me. I can't live in this cell forever. People will come looking for me. I'm sure Mason will know exactly where to find me.

Their loud bursts of excitement startle me. They've already gone back to their games. I'm a hero stuck behind bars, listening to the cheers of villains.

All of a sudden Owen is back and at my cell. I'll admit I was surprised to see him return. And it looks like he might have brought me food.

"Here." He slides the banana to me through the metal bars and I reluctantly grab it. He may have poisoned it for all I know.

I inspect the banana cautiously before peeling it and taking a hesitant bite. How would someone go about poisoning a banana from the outside? Would they inject it into the peel or would the poison even reach the actual banana?

I seriously need to get out of here. I'm already losing my mind.

Can't lose what you never had, Della.

"I suppose you've figured out how the handcuffs work now?" Owen takes a bite of an apple and sits down on the floor in front of my cell. I nod my head, accepting the fact that this guy is my only communication at the moment. He may be the only one to talk to me without calling me a moron as far as I know.

"I'll tell you what," he bites the green apple again before he finishes his sentence, "You don't have to wear them in the cell."

My eyes widen as I'm taken back, "Really?"

"But, if you want to come out of the cell at any point, the handcuffs go right back on." His eyes narrow as I try to take in his offer.

"So you'll let me go?" I ask, baffled.

He lets out a hoot, "No, it'll be more like a supervised walk."

"A shock collar and supervised walks make me feel a bit like a dog, just so you know." I throw back in his face bitterly.

He rolls his eyes, "You defeated Red Raven, and that's when we knew something was up. Stealing The Undergrounds' secrets-" He tsks, shaking his head, "We can't just let you go on with your life like nothing happened.

I finish the last bite of the banana to respond, "So what's my punishment? Rot away in here?" I try my best to stay nonchalant. Trust me, I'm freaking out on the inside.

He rubs his index finger and thumb over his temples. It's the same face I make in school on a daily basis. Even though he's a villain, I find him very relatable.

"The board hasn't decided the length of your sentence." He sighs in exasperation.

I bite my tongue in anger. This is how he wants to play this game? I'm supposed to spend the summer before my senior year trapped down here for who knows how long?

I bring myself to push my body against the bars with a look in my eyes that scream at him.

"The board can get a better security system if they really care about protecting their information. I refuse to let you keep me here." I grit through my teeth.

Owen's eyes soften, as if I've hit a nerve. If anything I thought he'd have pressed some button to shock me. Instead, he purses his lips and begins to walk away again.

This has to stop. Even if I'm here for more than a few days, I need someone to talk to. If Owen is the most civilized person here, I need to at least play nice, rather I pretend or not.

"Owen, please. I can't stay here." I watch him halt in his tracks.

He turns on his heel and retreats back to my cell. His eyes are a mixture of green and brown as they come close to my face on the other side of the bars.

"I'll take you out of the cell, but I need you to promise me you won't try to run." He whispers.

"Why would I? I'd like to keep my pain level at a minimum." I sass him.

He slaps his hand on the bar, "I mean it! I don't want any publicity stunts. If you make a scene, you'll pay for it."

It terrifies me how often he has mood swings. I don't remember Thomas being bipolar. Could it be true that it's mere coincidence that Owen is almost identical to Thomas?

Yeah, right, Della.

"Okay, I promise if you tell me this," I take a shaky breath, afraid of the answer, "Why do you look so much like Thomas?"

Owen doesn't pull his eyes away from mine. As much as I'm for eye contact when speaking directly to someone, I'm finding this extremely uncomfortable.

He smirks, "Let's take a walk."

A/N

Ayyyyeee!!!
How is the sequel so far? I know there are tons of questions that have yet to be answered, but I can't reveal everything in the first few chapters. Where would the fun in that be?

Hopefully there are some theories already forming, and I can't wait to see them. You have no idea how thrilling this book will be!

Thanks for reading!
Always, Sunny
