Chapter 19 -- I could just freeze that too

Della's POV

The sky is growing darker, and even though I don't know what time it is, I know that summer days last forever. Just because a little pink tint of color has appeared in the sky doesn't mean the day is over. Quite often I can't wait for the day to end, so I can just go to sleep and start fresh in the morning. But today was different.

Owen needed to run some errands, and while I could've literally run them for him, it was nice to go out and do ordinary things. I haven't felt ordinary in a while.

"Okay, seriously, I'm never going with you to the grocery store again." Owen says through a fit of laughter. We continue walking down the cracked sidewalk with grocery bags in our hands.

"I didn't mean to knock over all of those cereal boxes, okay? Just because I'm a speedster doesn't mean I'm not a clutz." I try to defend my blunder seriously, but I bust out laughing when he does.

"I wasn't even talking about that." He clenches his stomach with his free hand, trying not to crack up before he gets his sentence out.

"Then what?" I chuckle.

"Don't think I didn't see you dancing to Are you gonna be my girl in the fruit section."

I feel my cheeks turn red. I didn't realize anyone was watching. That song is too catchy to not dance to it. "I'm not apologizing for that one." I reply mundanely, to which he just chuckles more.

"Whatever. Let's just get these groceries back to my place before it gets dark," I look over at him curiously. "Villains are more active at night." He smiles, to which I roll my eyes and push him off the sidewalk. If any villains show up, I'm sure they know Owen and would leave us alone.

Suddenly, I witness a shadow stream across the brick wall of a shop to my left. While Owen steps back onto the sidewalk, I begin to feel a panic rise in my chest.

"Did you see that?" I ask him in a whisper.

He looks around curiously. "See what?"

"The shadow." I hiss at him.

"Again?" He asks, continuing to search our surroundings with crazy eyes. He turns around, looking for anyone who might be following us, I assume. Irritation consumes me because of his obvious action.

"The shadow came from this wall." I nod my head to my left, keeping my words quiet and my actions subtle.

His eyes grow wide when he turns back around. Before I can say anything, he grabs my hand nonchalantly and quickens our pace. I want to snatch my hand away, but I'm not sure what he just saw. I'm not going to question his plan.

"Someone's following us." He says in a hushed tone as we round a corner.

I don't say a word. My heart beat races at this news and my natural instincts are to run away or turn invisible. Something tells me I can't do that this time. If someone is following us, they're probably trying to find out if we're supers. I can't give us away that easily. We have to act natural.

"Do you know who it is?" I ask, but he stares at me with daggers for speaking about the person behind us. Excuse me for asking an important question.

Maybe they're not following us. We're being paranoid.

I can hear their footsteps catching up to our pace. High heels, I think. Ash has taught me too much. I should not be able to recognize what kind of shoes someone is wearing from the sound of them. At least I can tell it's a woman without turning around like Owen did.

There's another corner coming up, and I know Owen is going to take it. The question is, will she? I can almost feel her presence behind me. She's getting closer. This can't be coincidental.

We turn the corner sharply and then Owen pushes me into the first alley we see. I nearly stumble to the ground because of his sudden burst of strength. I'm sure he didn't mean to be that harsh by the way his eyes soften as I rub my arm.

The shadow of the figure quickly turns the same corner and is projected on the wall behind me. I look up nervously, and so does Owen. We put our back up against the opposite wall, so she can't see us in the alley at first glance.

I'm about to peek around the corner when Owen cups my face in his hands to make me face him. He glares at me. So he can turn around to see who's following us, but I can't sneak a peek around the corner?

I wish he could read my mind in this moment. I want to ask him if he recognized the woman. If Owen has so many connections to people in this town, he might know who's following us.

The footsteps are getting closer and closer, and I find myself holding my breath. The person finally passes by the alley, and I find myself turning invisible. Owen grips onto my hand, and the sudden movement makes my breath hitch and my invisibility fade away. The woman, who was almost out of sight, turns around sharply. In a split second, Owen - who was by my side - turns so that we're face to face. He cups his large hand to hide our faces.

I'm about to mouth to him that she's still looking at us, but he doesn't waste a second of this adrenaline filled moment. He plants his lips on my own. My eyes grow wide as I watch the woman walk away in a dash.

The kiss is driven by arenaline. There is no spark, there are no fireworks. There's nothing but my rage behind the forced kiss.

When Owen still hasn't broken off the kiss, I push him away. His eyebrows furrow in confusion. I find myself extremely upset with him, that he thought the only way to cover our situation was to kiss me. I could've made both of us invisible and just left the woman wondering where we went. Sure it would've been more suspicious, but it was a more resourceful plan. What are our powers good for if we don't use them?

"Why did you do that?" I exclaim, still using a quiet voice.

He throws his hands up, "I just improvised! It was a quick cover!"

I feel my jaw clench, "You don't just force me into an alley and kiss me! I could've turned us invisible or ran us down the block! But you wouldn't even let me speak!"

Owen scowls at me, "I saved our identities. You would've blown our cover! Don't worry, the kiss didn't mean anything."

I feel my fingers ball up into a fist. While I try not to be angry with him, I find his words insulting. He didn't have to kiss me to make that woman go away. We could've ran down the alley and hid behind the dumpster. Apparently, I can't do anything helpful in anyone's opinion.

I can't bring myself to look into Owen's eyes. Maybe it's because I'm angry, or maybe it's because he said the kiss meant nothing. Either way, my emotions are going haywire. I begin to walk away, leaving behind the groceries I was carrying. Owen reaches out to grab my arm, but I shake him off.

"Della, come on." He pleads, but I keep walking. He wouldn't listen to my plan, and he thought he could just plant a kiss on my lips to make up for it.

"Where are you going?" He jogs to catch up to me. He's lucky I didn't take off in a flash.

"Away from you." I reply dryly. He grabs my wrist and turns me to face him. I almost wince as I feel my wrist burn from the sharp movement.

"Be reasonable, Della. We both know letting that woman see us as supers would've been a mistake." He says it so casually, but I sense a cold tone to his voice.

I roll my eyes, "With my powers, she wouldn't have seen us."

He closes his eyes, his lips pursing together in frustration. "You don't get to call the shots, Della. That's my job."

Just like that, I'm back to feeling small and insignificant. Yet, I feel his words adding fuel to my fire. So he doesn't need me? Fine, I'll leave.

"Call the shots, and make the shots yourself. I'm not putting up with this." I yank my wrist away and start walking down the sidewalk again. Why are my emotions all over the place lately? I feel like a basket case.

"Della! Stop! I need you!"

I keep walking, "No, obviously you don't."

It's silent for a moment, but then I hear his voice again from a distance. "I lied to you."

Clearly, those four words got my attention. I pause, but I don't turn around.

"That kiss... It did mean something."

I bite my tongue, waiting to see if he has anything else to say. When he doesn't, I spin on my heel. "Goodbye, Owen." I use my super speed to bolt away from the scene.

How dare he. How dare he forcefully push me into an alley, kiss me against my will, tell me I mean nothing to him, and then tell me I mean something to him. In case you didn't notice, I just got out of a relationship. I'm not even sure if it's over. Now Owen wants to add his name to the drawing? Honestly, I'm tired of guys thinking that all that's on my mind is my love life. While I miss Jonas, and while I admittedly have some sort of feelings for Owen, there are more important matters at hand. For one, who has been following us? Heaven forbid I actually have any ideas or plans.

I'm tired of being treated like I don't know what I'm doing. I'm exausted from being pushed to the side. This is my fight. I will take Red Raven down by myself. I will figure out who's been following us by myself.

There's no time for a love story. I have criminals to interrogate.

***

It's pitch black outside, with no light from the moon. This is the perfect opportunity to break into jail.

Huh. I've never heard of someone breaking into jail. Though, I'm sure I'm not the first.

This shouldn't be too different from when I froze the wires of Red Raven's machine. I look up at the dreary building in front of me. I'm in my new super suit, hoping that Thomas and Mickey won't recognize me. Here goes nothing.

Slowly, I turn myself invisible. It helps to close my eyes as I fade into my lack of appearance. When I lift my hand up, I'm relieved to see that my plan is going accordingly so far.

I sprint up to the main doors. They look impossible to break through. It's time to put my powers into action.

My hands fly up to freeze the surveillance cameras above my head. I know there are going to be more cameras when I enter the building, but I'll cross that bridge when I get to it. Next, I have to hack into the security system to disable the alarm. Or, I could just freeze that too. Ice is shooting at the panel before I think twice. I watch as a few sparks come out from the panel, but I shrug it off. The damage has been done.

I walk into the building with ease, throwing my hand up at every camera, and watching it short out immediately after my action. I turn the corner to see a door leading to a hallway. This must be where the prisoners are kept. The door has a manual lock on it. I search for the closest guard on night watch. I would love to tell myself that he's half asleep and that this will be easy, but he's actually wide awake and alert. Well, no one has caught my invisible self yet. I might as well continue with the plan.

My feet guide me over to the tall, intimidating man. He towers over me, and he looks like he weighs three times as much as I do. If he suspects something, I don't think I can make it out alive. I'll just make a run for it and come back later if he catches me pulling the keys off of his belt loop.

I feel my face scrunch up as I focus on the task at hand. If the keys so much as jingle, I'm not going to be able to complete my mission. The anxiety is killing me. My fingers slowly unhook the key ring from his belt loop. Cautiously, I hold my other hand around them and pull them to my chest. I tiptoe back to the door and then I realize I have to create a diversion to get the guard to go away.

"Grant! There's been a security breach!" The officer beside me reaches for his walkie talkie on his opposite hip. I'm sure they have less of a childish name for it in a jail setting, but that's what I'm calling it.

"Check the security footage." He responds urgently.

Static comes through on the other end, "I did. The cameras are frozen and the security panel is fried."

The guard - whose name is apparently Grant - is running down the hall I came from just a minute ago. Well, I guess I was my own diversion. That worked out better than I thought.

Once Grant is out of sight and I can't hear his footsteps anymore, I quickly place the first gold key into the lock and turn it. Nothing. There's over 20 keys on this ring. I mentally groan.

Ten keys later, a silver key turns in the lock, and I pull the heavy door open. This must be the hall for certain selected criminals, because there are only five cells. As I enter the doorway and close the door behind me, I realize the first three I come across are empty.

Then I see Mickey and Thomas. They're in two separate - but neighboring - cells. Both of them stand to see who has entered their hall. That's when I decide to turn visible again. I smirk as I look at both of them. They come to the edge of the cell and grab the bars. I cross my arms over my chest, keeping my smirk now that they can see it.

"And they said breaking in would be hard."

A/N
Well, well, well. Della has decided to go solo. Bold choice, Del, bold choice.

Sooo... The kiss... What do y'all think about all of that? Especially the part where they're being followed again. Who is this woman???

I'm trying to get on an updating schedule, but I'm not doing so well. I recently got casted as Eponine in my school's production of Les Miserables, so I have rehearsals almost everyday. Please be patient with my random updates because we're finally reaching the climax of this story. *Buckles seatbelt* HERE WE GO!

Thanks for reading!
