Chapter 6: Thief Alert

So much for kindness.

Eunha felt like she'd been defeated in a war she was oblivious to. Jungkook was nowhere to be found and a lot of valuables from the house were missing. Now, it wouldn't take a brainiac to connect the dots.

Eunha, for one, did not like to doubt people too quickly. She had hoped against hope, checking even the bathroom and outside the house, wishing that Jungkook was just taking a shower or waiting for them to wake up. But she knew she was foolish for wishing such a thing after seeing the condition of Taehyung's room.

Jungkook had robbed them. He had taken advantage of Eunha's kindness.

Eunha was reminded of a familiar feeling that she was not very fond of. Betrayal. She remembered her sister leaving for Australia right after their parents had abandoned Eunha. She was always betrayed, family or stranger, it didn't matter.

The little money that Eunha had was stolen by somebody she helped. She felt so bitter that she could almost taste it on her tongue. Maybe Taehyung was right. Maybe kindness was not a strength, but a weakness.

The creek of a door opening snapped her back to reality and she realized, for the first time, that tears were streaming down her face.

Weak little Eunha, always crying like a child. She taunted herself mentally, wiping away the tears.

Taehyung appeared in the lounge looking quite disorientated. She assumed he had woken up because of the harsh knocks she had made on the room next door. He rubbed his eyes as they scanned the lounge until he noticed Eunha, who was sitting on the floor, with her head in her hands.

"What's wrong? Why are you sitting on the floor like that?" Taehyung asked in his raspy morning voice, indicating that his throat was dry. He scratched his head for a moment as he stood a few steps away from Eunha, seeming perplexed.

Eunha looked up at him apologetically but said nothing.

"What happened? Did you get hurt?" He pressed on as he walked over to her and grabbed her by the arm. "Get up, why aren't you saying anything?" Eunha stayed silent as she was pulled up by Taehyung right into his muscular arms. He rubbed her back with one hand as he asked her if she was feeling sick. She glanced at him almost sadly as she imagined how instantaneously his concern was going to change into a mad rage when he figured out what Jungkook had done.

How can I be so stupid? Eunha lamented. She felt guilty for giving Jungkook the chance to steal from them. If she had never let him stay, he wouldn't have been able to steal anything.

"I'm sorry, Taehyung, you were right." She finally spoke, her voice low and hesitant.

"What are you talking about?" Taehyung frowned.

"Your suspicion about Jungkook, you were right." She explained further, stepping away from him as she tucked her ombre strands behind her ear.

"Huh? Jungkook who— oh, Jungkook, the guy you brought home last night? What about him?" Taehyung questioned, giving Eunha a bamboozled look.

"He's gone." Eunha sighed, avoiding his eyes.

"Well, that's what we told him to do. He was supposed to leave in the morning." Taehyung said. Clearly, his mind was still foggy and sleep had not worn off him properly yet because he was not catching onto something that would have been his first speculation any other time.

"Take a look at your room," Eunha told him, not being able to explain anymore. She couldn't help feeling guilty and was slightly fearful of how Taehyung would react.

Taehyung, looking puzzled and somewhat irritated, walked past her and went inside his room. To say that it was a mess would be an understatement. The room looked as if a tornado had occurred there. The navy-colored sheets had been ripped off the mattress and were lying on the floor. All three drawers of his nightstand were open and empty. Taehyung's brain finally started working again as he examined the room, his confusion slowly turning into burning anger. Things were thrown around like somebody had searched the entire room thoroughly. The closet door was also wide open and when Taehyung checked, he noticed that some of his outfits were missing.

"What in the devil's name..." Taehyung stared, wide-eyed, at the clutter in his room. He snapped his neck around at such a speed that Eunha thought he might just break it. Two infuriated brown orbs met hers as he glared at Eunha. It was an expression Eunha had often seen on him. Anger. His face hardened even more when she looked away.

"Where's Jungkook?" He asked. His voice was low and sounded almost like a growl. Eunha could sense an upcoming outburst.

"I told you already, he's gone." She responded, nervously rubbing her arms.

"Ha!" Taehyung let out the most hollow laugh Eunha had ever heard. "That asshole. How dare he steal my things and run away." Taehyung spat through gritted teeth. Eunha stayed silent. He inhaled a sharp breath as if to keep his rising anger at bay as he started moving around the room, Eunha assumed, checking for what things exactly were missing. The more Taehyung searched, the more agitated he became. He had started kicking things around and cursing louder each time he tripped over something on the floor.

"He took all of my damn money!" Taehyung bellowed, storming out of the room and joining Eunha in the lounge where she stood, looking like she was at a funeral. "My clothes and whatnot!" He continued to shout. "And all of this is your fucking fault!" He pointed an accusing finger at Eunha, a vein popping in his neck.

"I didn't know he would do this," Eunha's response sounded feeble and barely audible over the booming tantrum Taehyung was throwing.

"Of course, you didn't know! I told you a thousand times to stop trying to be the hero for everybody, not everyone deserves that!" Taehyung snapped, his jaw clenching and unclenching as he spoke.

"I'm sorry, okay! I just felt like Jungkook was a good person-" Eunha tried to excuse but Taehyung cut her off, too angry to even listen.

"Your sorry isn't going to fix anything!" He glared. "And next time, don't dwell on what you feel so much and try to take logic into consideration. You're too nice, and look where it's got us."

As much as his words felt brutal to Eunha, she knew he was right. Letting a stranger stay the night was utterly idiotic of her. Come to think of it, Jungkook had confessed to wearing stolen clothes. What was the guarantee that he wouldn't steal their belongings? Now Eunha felt madder at herself than Jungkook.

But still, it wasn't fair, Eunha sulked, Taehyung was acting like he was the only one who lost his things. Jungkook had also stolen tons of things from the kitchen, all of which Eunha had bought with her hard-earned money. Taehyung's money wasn't even his, he had stolen it. She supposed this was some downright karma to him.

Having finished his tantrum, Taehyung strode off to Eunha's room and came out again after a moment, fully dressed in the same outfit that he was wearing last night. With his black blazer in his hand, he slammed the door of her room shut and sent one last nasty look toward Eunha.

"Where are you going?" Eunha inquired, following behind Taehyung as he threw on his blazer and approached the main door of the house.

"I'm going to find that bitch and snap his neck!" Taehyung sneered before he opened the door and the cold breeze entered the house, making Eunha shiver.

"Tae—"

She tried to stop him but she knew it was no use. Before she could even finish her sentence, the door had been slammed shut with a loud bang, and Taehyung was already gone.

~~~
Crying over spilt milk was no use and Eunha knew that very well so instead of sitting at home, crying and blaming herself, she decided to look for a new job. She needed money to survive.
The grocery store experience was bad enough for Eunha to despise all the grocery stores and their owners in Seoul and the boss of the café she had last worked at always made her overwork and never paid enough. Eunha wanted to get a different job this time. Someplace that wasn't too hectic so it wouldn't require too much work - not that she was a slacker - she just wanted some peace of mind and the only peaceful place that she knew was a library. She should work at a library, Eunha decided, as she wandered down the street, searching for nearby libraries on her phone.
The grey sky above her was cloudy and was turning darker with every passing second. It looked like it was going to snow soon. It could rain even. It was certainly not the best weather to be roaming the streets without an umbrella but Eunha had no choice in the matter. Finding a job was her priority. When she shifted her eyes from her phone to the shops around her, she realized that she didn't need to search for a job after all. For the first time, the job had come to her itself. An easy find, it was, the bookstore next to the small flower shop looked warm and welcoming.
The Villains Den. Eunha read the sign displaying the name. A half-amused smile made its way to Eunha's lips as she thought that the name gave such Taehyung vibes. Perhaps, that was the reason why she entered without thinking twice. She was originally planning to work at a library but she thought a bookstore couldn't be too bad either.
As she made her way inside through the glass door (with a metallic frame) she took in the structure of the place. The majority of the color that covered the store was cinnamon brown. The wooden shelves, stacked with books, had the same color and the smell of old and new books was in the air. The bookstore was simple yet aesthetic.
"Hi there!"
Eunha jumped at the sound of a feminine voice right behind her. A lady who seemed to be in her mid 30s appeared out of nowhere, startling Eunha. She was holding a pile of books in her hands and her bleached blonde head poked out just above the thick book with a dark-blue cover at the top of the pile.
"H-hi!" Eunha stammered, quickly bowing her head.
"Sorry, didn't mean to startle you. You looked a little zoned out." The woman said as she walked over to the wooden counter and placed the books on it.
"Happy New Year, by the way!" She turned to Eunha, beaming. Eunha noticed that despite her pearly teeth and bright smile, she looked like she hadn't rested in years. She had a fair complexion, similar to Eunha's, and brown eyes that were slightly swollen.
"Happy New Year to you too." Eunha returned the kind smile.
"So, you're here to buy books?" The older woman asked. Eunha parted her lips to answer but she spoke before Eunha could, letting out a light-hearted chuckle. "What am I saying? Of course, you're here to buy books, this is a bookstore. I can say the obvious things sometimes and appear foolish, and sorry if my Korean sounds awkward, I lived in the States for a long time."
"I see," Eunha briefed, not knowing what to say. Although, she couldn't help but feel glad about how easygoing the lady was.
"Would you like to take a look around alone or do you want me to help you with anything?"
"Actually, I'm not here to buy anything," Eunha told the woman and her smile faltered for a moment.
"Oh, is that so? Well, that's a little disappointing."
"I'm here for the job," Eunha informed.
"The job?" The blonde frowned for a moment like she didn't understand what Eunha was talking about. Eunha nodded and it finally seemed to click in her mind. "Ohhh, the job, yes, I put up that flyer just a few hours ago and I already have a lovely girl applying for it. This must be my lucky day!" She chirped, showing her bright smile again.
More like my lucky day, Eunha thought, as she smiled back at the cheerful lady.
"Don't just stand there, come here, take a seat!" The woman gestured for Eunha to come around the main counter and sit on the chair that was present behind it.
Cutting out the part that she'd been robbed by someone she helped and that there was no guarantee when Taehyung will come back, she still wanted to believe this was a good day. After all the terrible happenings in the morning, the only good thing that happened to Lee Eunha on January 1st was discovering the bookstore and she hoped that it stayed that way for a long time.
